While I was in school, I decided to get a job to help pay the bills.
So that's what led me kind of down to the strip, and I was a concierge.
I think I was making $16, $17 an hour or something like that.
A lot of the entry-level audio positions here in town,
they start off between like $12 and $14 an hour.
So that was something I had to look at at the time.
It was like, am I going to take a pay cut just to say I'm using my degree?
So I went back to that same question.
What can I do that I'm passionate about doing?
So I decided to circle back around to programming and computers
because I've always had a love for it.
So I started taking a look at, how can I teach myself?
And then I stumbled across Treehouse.
I got my first badge on Treehouse in April of 2014.
And then 10 months later, I got hired at my first full-time professional programming job.
Go back to January, I was on the strip at a hotel, standing at a desk,
waiting for guests to walk up and ask for show tickets.
That's crazy. That's crazy.
And now I'm sitting in my own office and I'm getting paid to code,
do something that I love to do.
Who gets to do that?
Who gets to go to work every day and get paid for something that they would do for free?
And I love what I do.
So I could do this forever.
And because it's changed my whole family's life.
We were literally living in a two-bedroom condo.
And now to be able to get us out of that and to come and move into a house
where you have plenty of space and there's a backyard where the kids can go play.
And it makes me feel really good.
I mean, and all of that came from learning at Treehouse.
Don't think that to be a programmer, you got to be this 20-year-old kid
that does nothing but sit in front of the computer all day and figure out code.
Because that is totally not my story.
I'm in my mid-30s and I learned to code, you know, and I do it now for a living.
Anybody that's willing to do it can do it.
My name is Brian Knight.
I live in Las Vegas, Nevada, and I'm a software developer.
