Welcome to Cinemonica
Today I'm gonna talk about some anime movies that you definitely need to watch now. I'm the biggest Studio Ghibli fan
I've watched every single movie. I love them so much, but there are so many great other anime movies out there
So I wanted to continue this list since I already made another video about this
But this time I'm telling you about even more anime movies that you need to watch before we start
I want to say how happy I am about the new discord group that I made the little film club
We already have like 400 members and it's been great
So if you want a place where you can talk about movies anime TV shows and whatever
Then you're more than welcome to join. I'm gonna leave the link in the description
Alright, so a lot of these movies I've already talked about in a lot of my past videos
But now they're all together in just one video starting with a movie that again
I have gushed about this movie so much. I love it. It's amazing
I think it's one of the most original anime movies that I've ever seen
It's so weird and it's the night is short walk on girl
This movie is about a girl who has the craziest night of her life. She's going from bar to bar drinking lots of alcohol
Honestly, it's just like a really weird kind of psychedelic dream
The animation is super unique super colorful and honestly, it really does feel like a dream
It is extremely fun and something that I love about it is the music
The music in this movie is so quirky and so fun and I still haven't been able to find it on YouTube
Spotify or anywhere but to this day I still remember it because I loved it
It is directed by Masaki Yuasa and since I'm talking about him
I want to mention another one of his films that I really like it is called ride your wave
It's about a girl who tragically lost her boyfriend. So she starts seeing him in water
It sounds kind of strange and like it would be sad
But for some reason this movie wasn't really that sad
It was more fun than anything else
And I really really like that even though it deals with loss and with grief it does so in a way that's really fun
That sounds bad. It's grief is not fun
I just really appreciate how this movie deals with it something that I noticed with Masaki Yuasa films is the soundtrack
I really like the soundtrack in this movie the colors. It's super colorful. This movie is just so positive and joyful
Somehow it kind of reminded me of like an old school anime rom-com
Which I love now moving on to a different director this time
Mamoru Hosoda who just released his latest film called Bell, which I just saw and I loved Bell
It's like this combination of Beauty and the Beast meets
Summer Wars from the same director or if you haven't seen Summer Wars Ready Player One or Wreck-It Ralph meets
Hatsune Miku or like Hannah Montana. What more can you ask for? It's such a fun combination
Bell is about a high school girl named Susu who is very shy
She really loves to sing but somehow she just can't bring herself to sing
She's just kind of depressed
But then she enters this virtual world named you where she creates an online persona named Bell. Bell is beautiful
Fashionable and most importantly she has the courage to sing in front of millions of people
She becomes the most popular person inside this virtual world, but nobody knows it's Susu. It's all anonymous
They all know her as Bell. One day she's having a massive concert and it's interrupted by this beast who is being chased
Susu then takes it upon herself to try to find this beast who this person is and help him from whatever it is that
He's suffering from. This movie was not only a lot of fun
It was so gorgeous too, the animation, the whole virtual world and Bell as a character
Her design was just beautiful. I love her outfits. Honestly, I am a fan of Bell
I want to go to her concert. Her songs, honestly, bangers. The soundtrack was incredible
It was really funny, but it also dealt with a lot of serious topics. I was honestly super impressed
I really like Mamoru Osada's movies
But I feel like you never know what he's gonna make next because all of his films are very different from each other
The thing about Bell though is that it really reminded me of Summer Wars or the Digimon movie
Let's face it because of the whole virtual world
I'm a huge fan of Wolf Children, The Girl Who Left Through Time, which I mentioned in my last video about anime movies
So yeah, I was super excited to watch Bell and it did not disappoint at all. Bell is out now in theaters
I didn't watch it in a theater, but I'm dying to see it in a theater
And I think I'm gonna go probably this weekend because it was just gorgeous
And I would really like to see it on a big screen
Thank you so much to G Kids for sponsoring this video and letting me see Bell. I truly truly loved it
Speaking of Mamoru Osada, I want to talk about another one of his films
It's called Mirai of the Future which came out last year and it was actually nominated for an Academy Award
It's about a boy who has this little sister who he doesn't really like
He's suddenly not the only child his parents have to you know, pay attention to their daughter
He's kind of being a brat about it. So one day he gets a visit from his little sister all grown up
She's coming from the future. Through the film we see him learn and kind of mature and treat his sister better
It was very sweet. Definitely not as ambitious as Bell
So if you want to watch something that's a little bit more slow-paced and simple then I suggest that you watch Mirai
The next film I want to talk about is A Letter to Momo
A Letter to Momo is about a girl named Momo who has just moved out of the city
She starts seeing these mysterious goblins appear in her house, but she's the only one that can see them
She's very scared at first, but then they kind of like become friends
This movie was super fun, but it also deals with a lot of serious things such as grief
there's a lot of anime movies about
Losing someone and grieving and like coping with that in kind of like a spiritual way
this one really reminded me of Studio Ghibli because of you know
The spirits and Momo also kind of reminded me of Chihiro from Spirited Away. It really has a Ghibli vibe
So if you like Studio Ghibli, I really recommend you watch A Letter to Momo
It was absolutely beautiful and also the animation is very comforting
Next is a movie that I've talked about a lot in previous videos and it's In This Corner of the World
In This Corner of the World is about a young woman who goes to live in Hiroshima during World War 2
It shows the everyday life of this woman who's very caring
She loves art, but sadly is living so near war that her life is just changing all the time
It's a heartbreaking story that somehow is just full of hope but also misery
If you watch this movie beware because it will really rip your heart apart
So if you're in the mood to cry, this is the one that I recommend
It's very sad, but extremely beautiful at the same time
Next I want to talk about one of my favorite anime directors Satoshi Kon
I've talked about all of his movies extensively in past videos. In part one of this video
I talked about Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress. So in this video, I want to talk about Paprika and Tokyo Godfathers
Let's start with Paprika, which is a movie that is very very trippy
If you've watched Inception, this is the movie that Inception took inspiration from
It's all about dreams and going from dream to dream, reality to reality
Jumping around all these dreams. Every single frame in this movie is incredible
The animation in this movie is something I've never seen being done before
It's just extremely impressive and I feel like your imagination just runs wild when you watch this
It's just impossible to not get inspired when you watch this movie
Moving on to Tokyo Godfathers, I think the lightest and funniest movie from Satoshi Kon
It's about three homeless people that find a baby during Christmas and decide to take care of it as their own
What I love the most about this movie is the characters' personalities
They're all so vibrant and full of life
It is extremely fun to watch and somehow just very comforting
I'd say this is a great Christmas movie, but of course you can watch it any time of the year
The next movie I want to talk about is Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop
It's super simple but so wholesome
I really like the characters a lot, but what I liked about it the most is the colors
It's so colorful
The animation is just so pretty and pleasant to look at
I really like how the animators just, you know, had fun with it
Making everything as colorful as possible
It's about a girl and a boy who come together to try to find this old record that means a lot to this old man
Like I said, this one is just really simple, nothing too deep
You will not cry or be angry or sad
So if you just want to watch a really wholesome and cute anime, then this one is for you
The next one is Flavors of Youth
Flavors of Youth is divided into three stories
Which is great if you don't have time to watch a whole movie or you don't want to
It's basically like three short films
I am gonna say this though
I didn't like the three of them the same amount
I did feel like the first story was cute
The second one was whatever
And the third one is the one that gets all the hearts for me
The third story is the one that I want to see a whole movie made about
Honestly, I feel like it's worth it to watch all of them
But if I have to pick my favorite, it would be the last story
Although if you really enjoy watching anime food, then the first story is the one for you
The song in the end credits, absolutely beautiful
I had to look for it right away
As you can see, songs and soundtracks really get to me in anime movies
Alright, we've reached the last movie that I'm gonna talk about
And surprise!
It's a Ghibli movie
I know this is supposed to be movies other than Studio Ghibli
But I feel like this one is underrated
So I want to talk about it
And it is Only Yesterday
One of my absolute favorite Ghibli movies
And one that I feel like it's not talked about enough
It's about a woman who goes to visit her family in the countryside
And there she starts to remember her old life
How she was as a child
The movie is filled with flashbacks showing her 10-year-old self
And the contrast of how she is now and how she was before
I feel like this movie really makes you reconnect with your childhood self
And makes you think about
Did I accomplish all of those dreams I had as a child?
Have I grown as a person?
It is just absolutely wonderful
I feel like it's a movie that every single Studio Ghibli fan must watch
Even if you're watching it for the first time, it just feels so nostalgic
This movie deserves so much love
And that's it for my list of anime movies you should definitely watch
Let me know if you've watched any of these movies and what you thought of them
And of course, let me know of even more anime movies that you think I should include in this list
Please don't forget to check out Belle in theaters
It's an absolutely incredible movie
And I truly, truly recommend that you go watch it
Alright, thank you so much for watching
And I'll see you guys in the next one
Bye!
