August Tour Of The Rose Garden
Welcome to the schools in 58 Wales Therefore in this video I would like to present the
This school is the closest one
Now I have made a mistake maybe a few years ago
I will also make a statement at the end of the situation
I would like to make a toast now just to show you some of the kids
It's going to end end of the situation like these lies
The gladioli are also beautiful I will take care of them from now on
I will also write the letters because some of them are
rhoi ar ddiwedd yn dda ar hyn o bryd
and most of the children I will be talking to later
I will continue speaking to them in the other videos
This area is ahead ahead of the water I will get it
When the leaves are full it's much better like this
All things are about lies and they
work very well through the water
Felly we're here some of our whiskey barrels
I hoped the petunias would do a bit better
This is what I hope would have been done is using the
Water I was trying to save money and
also keep the kids after next year
I hope to have children after next year
I don't want to share them next year if I can help them
I have put this here and have greatly appreciated it
They are working faster and faster
The petunias had not been made
We will not be able to float them next
They won't give full credit after the water
We will be applying for them after the year
These petunias are doing well
The Ensetee ventricosa morellii looks very good now
They are beginning to get a little bit
of details about them It's starting to seem like a little bit of details
They must be very good at the end of
the year It would be interesting
We are sure you are happy that we will get the
next resource We have this rose here
It's about giving fully
I have shared it greatly
We have a little information about them
This is the one who came from the school
It is not a fragrant rose
and I do not know the true variety of it
It's very good
so I like it very much
I am going to
leave it there I have also received one of these children here
Hefty knowing like a castor oil
plant This is the Zanzibar diversity
I have one at the school ahead
which they have the most ways here
This one is the same
way but this one I believe
Otherwise it's just a small number of ways here
It really makes them ways
It can go out through the concrete but
I believe the school is not very open
This one is somewhat different in a few ways
But they look very good
What I want to do
is give them a steak because last year
I had a pan I had children from these roads it was a little
from these roads
I'm at school
and I had to do a few things back
To make sure I can continue moving forward here
We have taken the same path here
This one has done a few small tricks with the petunias
We have had a few small showers in the past few days
This year is looking very good
many displays of the petunias
They looked
really good back then
You can see that
the environment here
is smaller It's
starting to go now
I hope we will have a few more ways here
by the end of the year
I am tired it would go a bit in the last few days
I have bread and last days
Then look ahead here
I am getting other pictures
These are smaller
ways and they are
always a bit interesting on this side
Because the environment
takes up a lot of the
year and the resources
Therefore you can see
They are starting to go to the flowers
These ones here are going
to be smaller
It is obvious that
the first year is the
hardest You can get
some that will be easier
They were the first
And they looked very good
They are not going to be smaller They have not been given them
In the
past years The past years they had them
These are the
resources here and
they look very good That year
It would be
a bit smaller But one of the important things I want to focus on
in this video
Your leaves through the years
So I was planting each one of them
They have returned from
the mountains So this is the first operating unit
They were the first
operational unit they
were very small and they
did not come out much
and they had to
hope the organization was
there They were giving
I believe this is
one of the weights
or maybe two
weights right now
You can see it is being set
in frames
it looks very good
Now unfortunately
You have to go
ahead to get the first organization because the llyliau
In the
discussion Perhaps that's
a little because it takes them
ese few mean
but it means
but that's two lies
so they will take
I have two
meters up
there where
they are
common plants making
them look like that
It's very good
because we will be able to see them bigger
I have done this thing is the
choice of the two lies
and there are
three of each way Therefore
This is the same one
you can see
this is the same was shown
and will be important
This body is like the
many that are working hard and doing well
I'm getting
another one of the
way this works
Here's something
Many of the machines
have been repaired this
month and this is the
one that was working
The same one is still working Most of
them have broken and gone off in
a different
direction so
Next year what I really need to do is make sure I stake them quite early on
before they start to lean they're only leaning a tiny bit in spring it seemed
Okay but then when they became top-heavy they just started to fall down so
these are flowering nicely but they are a bit hard to see because as you can see
They're right down near the ground you have to go right down low to
get the full effect of them and one of the reasons this is one of my more favorite
This one has a really strong fragrance it smells really nice The
other ones apart from the pink bright pink from which I'll show you
A minute they don't have a really strong fragrance so they're just not
quite as good I don't think I like to have fragrant flowers when I can just
An extra bonus to having nice-looking flowers is also having one that smells
really nice so these will flower probably for a few more weeks and then
They'll finish flowering and will just be left with the green leaves I'll deadhead them
so they don't put too much energy into the seeds and most of the energy will go into the flowers
I then went back into the bulb for sizing up next year that's what I did Last
year the stems last year were more similar to this kind of size and they're
Much thicker this year because they grew larger the size of your lily plant
really depends on how well it did the previous season as it gathers all the energy
The energy the plant puts into the bulb this year really determines
how big it will get next year and how well it will do next season
It's interesting to see there are different varieties and they've all been
done differently they're all supposed to grow to a similar size eventually bu
Some have done better than others so the one I just showed you has
done particularly well this one here isn't one of the better positions
because it's away from the hedge and he gets plenty of light but it's also a
bit more sheltered than the one I just showed you but you can see there's three
Of them here they'really nice dark leaves and they're looking really healthy
and I've got quite a few flowers on them now but they just haven't grown
They are as tall and they are not much taller than they were last year so
these are sizing up a little more slowly even though the stems were quite thick
I was hoping they would grow a bit more because of that it just remained
a bit stunted but I'm quite happy with them hopefully over the years
They'll get bigger and bigger and taller and taller and they're quite nice
looking lies as well maybe not just a little bit smaller and they're not quite
They are not as fragrant so they are not as big a favorite as mine So coming along
here we've got three other varieties This is one here This one I don't know why the
Leaves have become so damaged that I have been checking for lily beetles and I have
been able to stop most of them this year so it's not been a big problem but this
Variety is a bit taller than the one I just showed you and it has more of a
yellow color again just a quite a nice looking lily and then we come over to
Probably my favorite one which is this pink one here now For some reason these
have really liked it even though they're quite close to the hedge and I would
Expect them to be a bit more stunted these are by far the tallest They don't
look particularly tall because they have gone horizontal but you can see if these
They would be about six feet tall so these are actually a really
nice size already and once they reach their full size it'll be
It would be really nice to display them especially as the lies face down so I'll
be able to see them nicely I'll bring you around to show you what they look like
It might not be to everyone's taste because it is a really quite a strong color
as you can see there and it has all these weird lumps on the flowers as well
The fragrance from this one is really nice and I also quite like how the
pollen on the anthers there just kind of dangles in the wind and they kind
of shake around it's just nice to have a little bit of movement to the flower
as well the slightest breeze and these shake around you do have to be careful
With lies though because the pollen really does stain clothing or
things like that now the other lies the anthers on them don't seem to
Dangle as much or as nicely as these ones but these ones I do like how they
kind of rock around the wind and also the colors really nice and I think this
One is actually slightly stronger in fragrance than the first one I showed
you so I think this is my favorite and it's the one that's sizing up the most
So I think that will have the most potential be interesting to see how big
that gets but I definitely need to stake it this year I think it's gone
That way because the hedge was there earlier in the year when the sun is a bit
lower in spring after midday this is in the shade because of the hedge this time
It's not too bad this time of year because the sun is a bit higher but the
shade comes on so this is kind of growing out towards the sun so I need to really keep it
They stake them otherwise they're going to keep doing that every year and then
finally we've got these three varieties down here so another three of one type
These ones are a bit smaller that's probably because they're right
next to the hedge and they're stunted so I think if these are in a
They are in a better position and they can be assessed quite well and I'll show them
to you again here They are not quite as centered as the others but they are quite nice
Looking at them they seem a little more like Asiatic lies with the
coloring they have there so these might be a cross with some of the others
Asian lies but they're still quite nice good lies I'm still very happy with
how they're doing and it's just nice to have a variety of different ones
and not just have all the same and I can always look up online to see
what varieties they are from the pack that I got and if there's any ones I
I particularly like that I can always get more of them to add to my collection so the other
thing in this bed which I'd like to focus a bit of time on today is the
Gladioli because they're just coming into their full flowering now they will
be slightly better in a few weeks but I don't want to miss them because if I
I'll film them later and I'll probably miss the lies so this is a mixed variety
I didn't actually buy these when I bought the lies I got them free from the
The bulb company would basically give you a free pack of gladioli if
you spent over a certain amount normally gladioli do well in Scotland
A year or two and then they just kind of lose energy and die out The problem with
gladioli is they don't like our climate too much you have to plant them quite early
Deep so they don't get killed in the winter but also the summers are a bit cold
so they tend to shrink every year getting less and less energy and getting worse
Displaying as the years go by I found the gladioli in Scotland the
leaves die with the first frost but these ones unusually lasted rig
They gathered a lot more energy from the Sun than they would normally and that 's
why they stayed green all the way until December even slightly into January
Why I think they've done so well so I'm definitely going to be keeping these year
after year to see how long they last for me all I need to do is deadhead them once
The flower stalk has finished flowering and is now leaving the leaves to gather
energy for next year's flowers so these are just a mixture of varieties I didn't
I knew which was which when I planted them because it was just all mixed
together and there's no way of telling what variety is from the bulb
They all look the same so I'm quite happy with the selection we've got I'll try and
show you all the ones that are flowering at the moment There might be a few
A couple of varieties that will flower later might look slightly different but
we have some white ones like these here you can see they have a lovely big white
These are some of the largest blooms on them really big flowers We 've
also got some nice two-tone ones so there's this one here whic
It's probably one of the most stunning looking ones I think could have been shot
the most vibrant color the blooms are a little bit smaller but not much and you
They have that really nice pink with violet in the middle or bright
pink and a kind of creamy yellow as well so that's nice to have
A bit of variety now we did have some strong winds which explains why a lot of
them are falling over or kind of hanging down So in the future I might have to
Think more about tying them up we also have this nice one here which
almost has a ruffle appearance so you can see there it's like really crinkly
And it's kind of pink and yellowish cream really interesting
patterning on the petals I quite like that kind of ruffled appearance
It gives it an interesting texture and next to that we have a very
similar variety which is a kind of similar color a coral color but
They don't have quite as many ruffles so I think they are actually slightly
different varieties but they are very similar you can see the main one
The difference is that this one's a lot more ruffled than the other so I
think that's all the varieties I've got at the moment You can see some more pink and
Coral-colored ones down there and more on the left side here there are
pink ones coming through and I have some white ones on the other side
There's a lot more still to come these are just the first ones starting
to flower you can see there's all these shoots coming up so all these spikes
These are all gladiola that are starting to appear so they will
come right around to the sunflowers There aren't as many on the right
On this side here but you can still see there's quite a lot of spikes coming
up So there'll be a lot more flowers to come and even these ones down here whic
You don't see any spikes yet but these are also going to flower soon so
you can see they're just a load of leaves These are big enough that they'll
Definitely flowering this year so originally down here you can see in each spot
where there are three or four stems there was originally just one plant last year
Year the plants did really well and the bulbs have divided so in each spot where
I had one plant last year I've now got three or four plants so they're spreading
Definitely doing really well sizing up getting more numerous so these will be
flowering probably a bit later in the year I don't know why these are further
They are a similar size but maybe they
just need a bit longer to start flowering
They'll be flowering probably in a month or two's time right
at the end of the season and because they've clumped up from the same bulb these will be the ones
Same variety as this one here so when they do divide they're genetically
identical clones so they always have the same flowers as their parent so it'll
It's good to see them clump up a bit more and this will be a really nice
display from now until probably September maybe even later if we get lucky
Some of these down here haven't even got flower shoots yet they'll
be flowering probably around September or October and once they do
Start flowering like this it does take three or four weeks until it completely
finishes flowering so what you get is the first flowers at the bottom
and then it just keeps going along the whole stem and as you can see there's
probably something like 30 individual flowers and they'll just keep growing
The gladioli put on a great display all summer so I'm really happy
with them even though it wasn't something I was going to include
Just some free bulbs that I got they've done really nicely and I'm hoping
year after year we'll get more and more of them I'll just have a really nice
Display so I'll show you a few more of the plants I have in the front garden
here I've got a lot of plants I won't talk about them all like the wallflowers or
Maybe the kale because I'll be talking about them later only on New Year or
I've talked about them previously we've got a nice cord line here this has put
On a lot of growth this is really quite small This is only about a year and
a bit old and as you can see it's grown really well really sizing up and I'm
oping this will become a small palm tree type tree and eventually what
happens is the old leaves will fall off as it ages you get a clear stem you ge
A big head of leaves at the top and it really has this nice palm tree
appearance even though in my climate it's not easy to grow palm trees so this
One of the hardier types of plants you can have
is the palm tree with the appearance of the other one which would be the Trachycarpus palm which is a true palm
The palm is actually harder than this but I'm interested to see how it
does It survived last winter with no problems but you only had minus six
We do sometimes get down to minus 15 and at those temperatures this can be killed
down to the root system so hopefully we'll get a few mild winters I'll get a
A decent sized plant but we'll just have to see how that does and coming into the
main rose beds now you can see the main star attraction at the moment are these
Pansies so I thought these pansies would probably do well in the summer heat
but apart from one brief heatwave it wasn't too bad up here down in England they
If I think 41 degrees Celsius so they had exceptional heat and it was also a
really dry low humidity heat which the pansies would have just been burnt to a crisp
crisp and dry but when that heatwave was happening down south we would probably only
have had around 30 degrees Celsius and I had managed to keep the ground quite dry
The ground is damp because I soaked it before the heatwave came so they're
done particularly well you can see they're actually starting to spread over and
They're starting to smother some of the lobelia that I planted here The
idea was as the pansies died back the lobelia would take over but the pansies
I think they have taken a lot of nutrients and water out of the soil and are
stunting these lobelia so if I pan around to the left this section here some of the
Pansies died out because this side is a bit sunnier and therefore a bit drier
and you can see how much bigger the lobelia plants are here that's what I mean
What was expected to happen with this bed this summer was that the pansies would
die out as these ones already were starting to and then the lobelia would take over
but it hasn't really happened yet so what I'm probably going to do
because we have another warm spell coming up temperatures will be around
20 degrees most days and there's not really any rain forecast What I'm going
to do is cut these back but I'm not going to completely remove them and I'll
Just get them to rejuvenate from the middle so you can see what happens is
when they get quite old they get leggy they fall apart the lower bits start to
It turns a bit yellow and just becomes straggly even though it still flowers
well and these will keep flowering right through into winter if I do nothing
Left them but what I'm going to do is I'm going to cut them back and you can
see a lot of them are starting to resprout from the center I'm just going
To leave that small central spot there will allow the lobelia
to come through a bit better they won't be competing as much
e pansies here and then when it comes to winter they'll have lots of nice
fresh growth because the problem is although this is looking great now whe
We get some strong winds we can get winds as high as 80 miles an hour
here so when that happens these leggy growths will get battered around
The wind and the stems will get snapped off and it won't survive the winter if
I cut this back and just leave that new growth to come through that'll be a lot
I'm going to do that today it will look a
bit better so it looks really good at the end
The moment as I say with loads of pansies on display those pansies will
be removed today we'll just have small pansy plants but it will allow the
Lobelia will come through and by the end of summer we'll have really good lobelia
display also the pansies will start to size up a bit by then and by the time
Autumn comes we'll have some reasonably sized pansy plants that
will be small enough to survive the winter storms and then when the
First frosts come and the lobelias die back the pansies will keep growing
because they don't mind the cold weather and they'll give me a bit of display
For the winter so the other plants I'd like to focus on today are probably some
of them the summer flowering plants that are looking good at the moment So the
Roses in particular are looking really nice this one is probably putting
one of its biggest displays so far this summer so I've got a lot of them
Different varieties of roses I've gone through a lot in previous videos
so what I basically did is I looked online and researched all the ones
which had the best disease resistance and the best fragrance as well as a couple
of them I already knew quite well such as the alpha bell rose over there and
The deep secret rose I've grown before and looked after in people's
gardens I already knew were fantastic roses but these on the other
Some were new to me so this one here is called Fragrant Cloud This one has
done really nicely this year as the name suggests it is very fragrant and I jus
Add these roses apart from the alpha bell which is a floribunda rose These
were hybrid tea roses so with these hybrid tea roses that tend to have
Slightly larger flowers and they don't bloom continuously they seem to
have flushes throughout the year so this has already had I think most of it
They've actually had two flushes so far this is the third I'll probably
get four or five in total this year the way I managed to get so many
Flushes on my plants is I just keep them really well fed with rose feed it 's
a specific feed which has all the nutrients that the roses like and whe
You have a rose that's really well-fed it will just keep constantly shooting up
new shoots and putting on loads of flowers so you can see this here massive flus
At the moment the first flowers were actually bigger than this because they
were on individual stems these are all branches you can see with the multiple
This one here is completely covered in flowers and you can see lots of
buds forming so this will keep flowering for probably three or four weeks
weeks and then a new flush will come up and I'll just have a rest for a
couple of weeks well that's the fragrant cloud rose really nice red one and
It kind of keeps that color quite consistent from the new roses such as this
one here or this one here all the way to the oldest ones there's not much
There's not actually a huge amount of color change over here we have Dutch gold
again which doesn't change too much with color it does change a bit it kind of
It starts with a darker richer yellow a very fragrant rose and
then it goes to a paler yellow with a lot of peachy or pink color
Color coming through and you can see that also on the new rose buds It'
s got a bit of red this one it's gone a bit leggy I don't know why maybe
I fed it a bit too much and it's another really strong shoot and it hasn't got a
lot of bushier growth hopefully it will start to grow some bushier growth when I
Give it a prune after it's finished this lot of flowers but you can see this one
even though it's got a few more buds in here and it's going to flower for a couple
More weeks we've got some new growth already coming up with some flowering
buds so this one probably won't have much of a break before its next lot
Flowering and then over here we have one of my favorite roses which is the
Deep Secret Rose This one has done really well it hasn't grown just one
Giant stem it's grown loads of stems but they're all covered in roses it's
looking really nice now This is probably one of the more fragrant varieties
It is a really dark rose one of the darkest I know of So when it first comes
through it has this like almost black petals as you can see here it starts off
Really dark and then it starts to open you've got this almost perfectly formed
black rose We did have a few wet days recently so the petals are looking a
a little bit damaged but like a perfectly formed rose bud there almost black
as it continues to open it gets this really vibrant color in the middle really
Vibrant red on the outside and it just fades a bit and gets a little looser
as it ages looking more like this towards the end but still very fragrant
Rose is one of my favorites and it also has slightly darker leaves
than other roses so it's just nice for a bit of contrast with the others
The new growth does come through it's more of a dark kind of maroon color This
is sowing it a little bit but I think most of them are in the flowering phase
At the moment there's not much new growth I'll see if I can find
some for you Though this one is showing a little bit of new growth but you can
See here it's got that really nice dark color and that continues for
a surprisingly long time Some roses have this and it disappears as
Soon as it leaves it gets a bit bigger but as you can see this new growth is coming
up Here it does keep that nice dark color for quite some time so that's another
A nice bit of interest with this deep secret rose and over here we've
got the floribunda off a bell rose which means it pretty much flowers
Constantly and it has to have more multiple shoots on each stem Hybrid tea roses
tend to have just one flower on each stem although as you saw some of mine do
ave multiple flowers on them but this one's nice because it's got that really
glossy foliage especially the newer foliage looks glossy but unusually for
Roses that actually keep that glossy foliage even with the older foliage
so you can see they'really nice and glossy whereas if I look at the deep
There's a bit of shine on it but it's a bit more of a matte color so
it doesn't have quite as glossy a leaf and these are all relatively
Disease-resistant roses and this one is also interesting because the flowers
change constantly so as the flower ages it changes in color and so on a plant
Like this you have numerous different colors of roses so it looks quite nice
When it first starts off it's almost red in places some of them it does vary
From rose to rose you can see some of the younger ones have much more red on
them and then as it opens you've got this really deep kind of almost orangey color
It doesn't look very orange in the sun here because the cameras are compensating
for the brightness but it is almost like a dark rich orange then it opens up to a
More vibrant yellow color again the Sun's kind of bleaching it out but it's
a vibrant bright yellow then it goes to a really bright pale yellow like this
One here and then with the older roses just as they're starting to finish it'
s almost white it's just a slight hint of yellowy cream in the middle but it's
Pretty much a white rose so that one's nice because it changes color as it ages
but also it's really fragrant which is a bit of a rarity for a floribunda rose
Most floribunda roses don't have a great fragrance so I've got a few kinds
of random plants in here as well I've got some of these tuberous begonias
Here I just kind of dotted in because I had a bit of space there's one or
two there's one on the end there and there's also one here I just put in
Because I had some empty space in the bed I've also got some opium poppies
which self-seeded from someone's I had last year so I've just left them because
I really like their flowers which are quite unusual with the red and black cross
and then the frilly sections and you can also see the castor oil plants here
There are a few dots in the bed this is the nice impala variety which has that
really nice kind of purpley bronze color to the leaves we do like that variety
It's quite stunning and the flowers even look quite nice when they come out
although I quite often cut off the flowers because I want to encourage more
Leaf growth and get a bigger plant overall Another plant I've got dotted in
here is cosmos so I got this as a mixed variety of cosmos and it's interesting
How different the varieties actually are so we've got this one for example
which has just gone crazy for leaves and hasn't flowered much it's got quite
Short flowering stems and it has a pale color almost white and then
with pink stripes on the edge with very short stems on the flowers so
This one might just flower more later on in the year maybe it's just a
variety that flowers later By the moment that's just going crazy for leaves
I got some similar ones here I think that's the same variety We've got a more
pink one here which is staying quite small We've got a pure white variety which is
Staying really small but it's flowering very well you can see long stems
lots of flowers that's looking really good and then I think my favorite one
but I think there's only one of them unless this one is the same variety
but it's unlikely because it's not flowering yet and this other pink one
It is flowering really well but I think this is my favorite one so far This
has been flowering the best but because it's been flowering so well it stayed
It's remarkably small because it puts all its energy into flowering but it has
this really nice pink massive flower which is actually quite a large flower for it
The cosmos is full of buds and it's just after a big flowering I
deadheaded it yesterday but there were a lot more flowers in this one
As you can see there are so many buds starting to grow that this is going
to keep flowering for quite some time there are loads more flowers coming and
It's just going to keep it looking good all summer but it is a bit small It 's
getting outcompeted by these other plants but it's interesting to see how
These bigger ones do and if they'll be covered in flowers at the end of summer
or if they're just going to keep growing with lots of leaves and it's jus
It's going to be a bit over-the-top massive shrubby bush with not
too many flowers and dotted around among them we have some dahlias
Talk too much about the dailies because they're not flowering yet but this
is one that's just starting to bud I've had this for years I think it's got a
A yellowish orange flower that will be in bloom in a few weeks we also
have kaffir l8 which is one of the largest flowering varieties of dahlia
Just starting to bud there are about four of them dotted around in this bed
and then the only other flowers to really make a note of are the marigolds
Here these marigolds are African marigolds they're the ones with really big
heads and these grow about one or two feet in height much bigger than the others
Small French marigolds I actually prefer these especially because I can grow them
above and they don't compete as much with the lobelia that I have down there so these
They were actually end-of-stock clearance from a garden center and they'really
leggy and torn they weren't healthy at all because they've been in the small pots
Pots left too long they cut off the flower buds all they really had was
one flower a load of purple leaves and they look really sickly cut that off
The first flower put all its energy into lots of new leaves it's got its
roots established and they're looking much healthier now and although they're
They are not really flowering much at the moment but they put on a fantastic display
at the end of the summer once they get going and you can see some of them are
Just starting to flower now but it would be good to show you guys at the end
of summer because these will be really quite stunning plants by then so I think
That's all for the tour here we've also got the inset eventicostum of course
at the end there which is looking quite nice but that tends to put most of its
growth in August and into September so I'll really focus more on that
at the end of the summer when it really starts to grow and becomes a gia
But that's all for this video there's a lot more plants in here which I
could have talked about but I just want to keep it a little bit shorter so it's not
Like an hour-long video that focuses more on what's flowering right now then
later in the season I'll give an end-of-summer tour or maybe an early-autumn tour
When some of the summer flowers are the biggest and flowering at their
best that will probably be the dahlias and the casserole plants will be too
Looking particularly good then and we'll also have the sunflowers in full
bloom and also the inset eventicostum will be giant banana trees so be prepared
I'm interested to see how big they grow That's all for
this update and I'll see you guys sometime around September
