Hello, I'm Osana, founder of Escola de Nóis
and today I want to teach you how to make a plant support with square knot
To make this piece I chose to work with the 3mm cotton cord
and now come with me because I will show you all the material you will need to make this piece
To make this piece you will need measuring tape, scissors,
a 7cm diameter wooden ring, 9 cords of 3.30m and 2 cords of 70cm
that we will make a hidden knot at the beginning and at the end of the piece
Now that you know everything you will need, let's start making this piece
The first thing we will do is to take all these cords, the 9 cords of 3.30m
and pass them through the needle, leaving the tips aligned
so that we can join everything down there and align it as well
Let's pull and join the tips
As they are 3m I need to do this
Now that we have put the 9 cords here and already aligned the tips
we will arrange these cords up here so that they are not one on top of the other
but one next to the other
in this way, arranged like this, all arranged on one side and on the other
and now I'm going to take a 70cm cord and I'm going to make a hidden knot here
to attach all these cords to the base
Hold it here, I'm going to take it out of here
Hold it here, very firm, leaving the ring very firm here inside the cords
I put this cord here under my thumb, leave this space for me to pull
with the rest of the cord, I take a turn here on my fingers and make this ring
I made this ring and now I'm going to make the turns
Here, one, two, and I'm doing the turns and I'm arranging the cords
so that they don't get tangled
three, four, five, and let me untangle the cords
I want them tidied up
six, seven, eight
Look, I'm doing as many turns as the cord gives, okay?
On the last turn, I pass it here inside this ring, I didn't let it go here, so it doesn't loosen
I passed it here, now I'm going to pull it up here, okay?
When I pull, I bring this loop in here and I hide my knot
Look there, I hid it, I pressed it, and it's firm up here, okay?
Look, hidden and firm
And what do I do here?
Here, I now take this excess, I pull it well, cut it, this tip here I put it in there
Here I also pull and the tip has already entered there, I don't even need to pull
Now it's time for us to separate the cords
Didn't you find it strange that we put nine cords here?
A lot of people ask me, I always have to use even numbers of cords
Look, even if you put an odd number of cords here, you will have an even number of lines down here
Because when I put a cord here, I have two lines down here
Each cord gives me two lines, so I put nine cords, I have 18 lines
And what am I going to do? I'm going to make three little arms of six lines
So let's split, two, four, six
Six lines here, let me put this over there
Six lines here, okay?
Divide, six more now
Two, I'll even turn here to help you
Two, four and six
Six more lines, let's check it out
Two, four, six, six more lines here
And then, look, I got six lines in here
Two, four, is there something wrong? No, I'm here
Two, four, six lines here
So I have three little arms with six lines
And then I fix these little arms like this, look here
I put one here, one here and one here
I want them to be neat so when I pull the cord
The little arms are neat, okay?
Look at this, now I can start working
I have the three little arms defined here
And with each little arm like this, I'm going to do a work with alternating square knot
In this way here, we take four lines and make a square knot
Right line under the two in the middle
Over the left line that comes here
And we pull and tighten
Now, left line under the two in the middle
Over the right line that comes here
And we pull and tighten
First square knot, okay?
First square knot
And we have six lines
And now what I'm going to do, I'm going to alternate
I'm just going to play this game of alternating this square knot
To make all this little arm of my plant support
So now what do I do?
These two lines that were left, I take these two lines with two more lines of the knot
And I'm going to make a square knot
And then I'll be alternating, look
The right line, now there are two left here, look
Right line under the two in the middle
Over the left line that comes here
And we pull
When I pull, look
I'm not going to take this knot up there
Because here was the space of my first knot, okay?
If I do that, I'm going to twist all my work
I don't have to pull it up
I have to leave this space, look
Respect this space here, which is the space of my knot
And now yes, I make the knot to the other side
Left line under the two in the middle
Over the right line that comes here
And we bring the knot, okay?
And we do this, look
Again, I'm just alternating the square knot
Here, right line under
Over the left that comes here
And we do this movement
This little arm will be done all like this
With alternating square knot
I'll always do this, okay?
The space was here, now it's here
It's the space of the knot
Again, look
Now I take it here
I'm just alternating this knot
And this space will be between one knot and another, look
See?
And that's what's going to give the beauty
To this plant support arm
That we're doing today
A plant support all with square knot
Look what a beautiful thing this is going to be
We're going to make these arms
Of the support all like this
All with this alternating square knot
Look how beautiful it's getting, see?
And we're going to repeat this movement here
For 30 centimeters, okay?
We're going to take this movement
Until we make 30 centimeters
I'll do it again for you to see how it is
Right line under the two in the middle
Over the left line that comes to this space here
And we pull the line
And now tighten the knot
When you tighten the knot, respect the space of the top knot
And make the knot to the other side now
Left line under the two in the middle
Over the right line that comes to here
And I pull
And then you're going to tell me
But Rosana, I'm left-handed
I can't start on the right side
No problem
You can start on the left side
No problem
Just don't forget
That the square knot is a double knot
You need to make the movement to one side and to the other
But you can start on the left side
No problem
I start on the right side
Because I'm right-handed
So I do it like this, okay?
But you can do it to the other side
No problem
Look here
And there we go again
Just repeating the square knot
And alternating it by position
I'm just alternating his position
I do it on the right side
And now on the left side
Now again on the right side
And when we make this exchange
We always get four lines
Now I got the four lines on this side
And I make the knot
When I'm going to do it to the other side
I'm going to get the four lines on the other side
Look, I did it to this side
The square knot is done
Respecting the space of the knot
And now I get four lines
I leave two
And so we do it, okay?
Just repeat this movement
There is no mystery
This space that is between one knot and another
Exactly two centimeters
Which is the measure that is made
The square knot
When we are using this 3mm cord
Look how beautiful this is
This space is what gives all the charm
In this work that we are doing
So now we're going to repeat this movement
Just repeat
For 30 centimeters
You're going to measure this here for 30 centimeters
Or if you want you can also count the number of knots
That you're going to give here
And I can tell you how many knots there will be
Soon when I get to 35 centimeters
I count all the knots
And I'll tell you how many knots there are, okay?
Look
So I'm going to continue here until 30 centimeters, okay?
And then I'll tell you how many knots there are
Look, what a beautiful thing
We made this little arm
And then we're going to measure here
From the hidden knot
When we started making the little arm
We measure 30 centimeters, okay?
And look here
30 centimeters in the last knot
See?
So 30 centimeters of alternating square knot
That's what will make up the arms of this plant support
So this arm is ready
We're going to go to the next one
So I'm going to turn here
For us to start making the other arms
Okay?
2, 4, 6
I'll leave the other arm there
And now we're going to start doing the same thing here
Okay?
We fix the lines
So that they are all neat
And the little arm is balanced
And if here we started doing the square knot on the right side
Here we will also start on the right side
To keep a balance, okay?
So that the arms are symmetrical
So we come here, look
4 lines and square knot
Right line under the two in the middle
Over the left line that comes here
And I pull
And I take it all the way up
I press it
And I bring the lines back
To do it to the other side
Now the left line under the two in the middle
Over the right line that comes here
And we pull
Notice that when I pull, I'm holding here, look
So this doesn't come loose
Because if I let go of this, the line will do this
And it's going to wrap around
When I pull the knot, I also hold here
Look at my two little fingers holding here, look
I hold these two lines in the middle to tension
And I take the knot
I closed the square knot
Now I take four lines
And I alternate the square knot
Like I did in the other arm that I showed you
In the same way, respecting the space of the top knot
And now I close the knot that I'm alternating
And I'm alternating a knot on the right, a knot on the left
A knot on the right, a knot on the left
And that's how I'm doing the arms of this plant support
And then we're going to do these other two arms
Alternating the square knot here
By 30 centimeters, the same way I did there in the other
I was doing an alternating square knot
And I measured 30 centimeters
So we're going to do this in this arm and in this one
When I get to the end, in this measurement of 30 centimeters
In both arms
Then we'll come back to start closing our plant support
Look how beautiful
We already have the three arms ready
Look what a beautiful thing it got
Look, you see that space I told you between one knot and the other
It's what gives this charm to these little arms
And we did a square knot work here
Alternated by 30 centimeters in the three arms
Look what this structure gives to our plant support
Now what are we going to do?
Now we're going to measure 15 centimeters to be able to join these little arms
Okay?
So we measure 15 centimeters
And we're going to measure 15 centimeters from the side of the highest knot
Okay?
So we measure here, look
Take these two lines and I'm going to measure 15 centimeters
Okay?
And I'm going to mark here, look
15 centimeters
But now what am I going to do?
For me to join these little arms
I have six lines on each arm
I'm going to use three lines to one side and three lines to the other
Okay?
I measured 15 centimeters from here to the top
Okay?
That's it
And then we're going to measure here too
One by the other
Okay?
As I have here, look
The same measure
Look
I just measured here
And I already have the three lines here
And look at this
Three lines to one side
So I took three lines from one arm
Three lines from the other arm
And I'm going to join here
With these 15 centimeters
I'm going to join here with a square knot
And I'm going to make a different square knot now, okay?
Instead of two lines in the middle
I'm going to have four lines in the middle
So I'm going to do
I'm going to take this tip line
I'm going to go under these four lines in the middle
Above the left line
And
I'm going to bring it in here
And I'm going to pull
Look
Let me just check the 15 centimeters here
When we pull the knot
Sometimes we take it out of place
And I took it out
It was 17
See?
So I'm just going to raise my knot a little bit
And bring it to 15 centimeters
Now yes
And then I can finish this knot
What does this measure mean that I'm doing here?
It means the opening I want
When I join all the arms
These 15 centimeters
It means the opening I'm going to give here
For me to fit my vase
Okay?
It's in this measure here
That I know the opening I want to fit my vase
So now that I've measured
I can close the knot to the other side
Look
I'm holding everything here
Tensioning the lines
So they don't get tangled
And then I come back
And
I complete my knot
And then I'm going to tighten it well
Okay?
So that these knots don't come loose
And this line has to be neat
Look
The three lines to one side
The three lines to the other
Okay?
And the square knot that was made
Look
You're going to do this to the other side now
I attached the three lines there
Now I'm going to attach the three here
Three lines on one side
Three lines on the other arm
And I'm going to do the same thing
And then I'm going to measure one by the other
Okay?
Because it's easier
Look
I stretch the lines
I measure one by the other
And here I make the square knot
With the neat lines
Just checking if it's at the same height
Of the knot
And then I can finish the knot
I pressed
And look
See?
I'm closing here
And now I'm going to close the last one
Look what we did
How beautiful
And now
Three lines of this arm
With three lines of this one
We're going to put everything together
Separate to make the square knot
And see the height here
Let me pull the knot here
To see if it's right
At the same height
So I can close
And even though I'm pressing here
Tensing the lines all the time
So it doesn't get loose
To be able to stay at the same height
I pressed
And look
I already have
This little accordion here
This is where the vase will go
Okay?
This is where the vase will go
So this opening here
Determines
What is the size of the vase that can go in here
And now we're going to close everything down here
And we're going to measure another
Look
15 centimeters
And we're going to do this
Look
This is where my vase fits
See?
In this space here
Here I'm going to make a hidden knot
And it will close
Look
And when we open
It fits the knot
This here opens
Opens
And fits the vase here
Now that we've put it together here
We're going to make
Another knot
Here, look
We're going to put together now
Three lines of this knot
With three lines of this knot
Very neat
For us to make another square knot here
Okay?
Which is what will support
On the side of the vase
Okay?
This
Tie here
And here we will measure
Another 15 centimeters
Okay?
And here I give another square knot
In the same way, okay?
Instead of two lines in the middle
We will have four lines in the middle
I bring the line here
And
I tighten the knot
I tighten the line
And I finish
On the other side
I closed the knot
And look
We're going to open this here
And here is where we will close
It's under this square knot
It's where we're going to close
It's where we're going to support the vase
But first we're going to join these
Sides here
Three lines on one side
Three lines on the other
Neat
And we join
And put it at the same height
And close the knot
Just check the height
We can close the square knot
And tighten
Look
And the vase is being made
See?
It's just missing this side here
Look
Three lines on one side
Three lines on the other
I put together
And now
I'm just going to check the height, at the same height, I closed the knot and I'm going to tighten it.
Oops, something happened that I can't, I wrapped the lines when I closed it.
Let me unwrap it and now I can close my knot.
When I did that, I lifted the knot a little, let me undo it.
It happens, we have to pay attention.
This line can't be tangled, why?
Because this line has to be neat like this, look.
I want it to be neat because it will look beautiful like this on the side of the vase.
If I leave it tangled, it lost the grace of my work.
Come on, let me fix it here, now it's right.
Without tangling the lines, I'm going to close my knot.
That's why it's important to tighten the lines, now it's right, okay?
That's it, look how beautiful.
And now, down here, I'm going to close it.
And this is where my vase will sit, look.
This part will be on the side of the vase and we will close it here, okay?
Then you will look at me and say, wow, Osana, but these long lines that stayed here.
I'll explain why.
When we work with a square knot, we work with four lines.
The two lines in the middle, they only work as a base.
I'm making the knot with the two side lines.
They are the ones that work the knot.
The two lines in the middle, they stay the same way, in the same measure until the end.
So we had four lines here at the end, look.
With that initial measurement I gave you, 3.30 meters.
The others are the ones that were consumed and that will stay here, look.
After we make the hidden knot, which will make the fringe of our work.
Oh, Osana, but I'm going to have this piece here.
Go, but you don't lose this piece here.
You will reuse it making other pieces, even more beautiful.
You can do it with leftover lines.
You can make several pieces, keychains, pins, many pieces, mini panels.
So it's not a waste, it's better to leave than to miss.
And then, look, when we do this here, we can experiment with the size of the vase.
So if you want a bigger vase, just open this measure more.
Of 15 centimeters that I gave.
Oh, I want to put a wider vase.
So you put a wider measure here, a bigger measure.
Instead of 15, 20 centimeters, depending on the size of the vase, the opening of the vase you want.
And then we can, at this moment here, try the vase in here to see how it looks.
And then tie, okay?
Now we're going to tie.
We put everything together, tie, look.
Arrange one part in front of the other, right, like this.
I put everything together here in my hand.
I take that other line of 70 centimeters.
I leave a part up.
I do the lap here on my fingers and I make this ring.
And now I'm going to do the laps, look.
Very tight, one, two.
And when I'm doing this lap, I'm adjusting the lines here so it doesn't get tangled, okay?
Three, four, five, six, seven laps, okay?
And then you go through here.
And now you're going to pull up here.
When you pull, tighten.
And this hidden knot, look, it's firm.
It doesn't come out of here or anything.
Only if I cut it with the scissors.
Now I'm going to take this excess off.
I'm going to pull and cut.
It's already gone there, look.
Up here too.
And that's it.
Now I'm going to cut this piece.
I'm going to get my strip right now.
And I'm going to give it that span that I like.
So that it has this very exposed and very natural air.
I like the strip very big.
And now it's time to put our plant vase here.
Ta-da!
Wait a minute, I'm going to get the vase.
We put it in and fix the plant.
So that it is well accommodated here.
Without being tight.
Look how beautiful!
Look, I want you to show this here.
Look how beautiful it is.
Beautiful!
See?
And voila!
Our piece is ready.
Look how beautiful it is.
It was wonderful!
There's even a flower on the plant.
Look how beautiful!
