The time I accidentally walked onto an Active NATO Military Base (!!)
Behind me, I'm going to pretend like I'm just looking straight ahead, but back that way,
you can see there's fenced off military trucks and everything that apparently I unknowingly walked
onto the military base. I thought this was just an abandoned runway, in all fairness. I thought
it was abandoned. Turns out, not so abandoned. Hello guys, and welcome back to the channel.
I am walking on the side of the road, but that's not because I'm hitchhiking. Shubham is the
hitchhiker, not me. I have a really fascinating adventure, something that I want to show you guys.
I'm driving out on the western side of Estonia, and you come around the bend,
and the entrance into this area is absolutely beautiful. It's a huge abandoned mansion.
Beautiful, isn't it? We'll get it closer. Go take a look inside. I'll explain why.
All right, so we've reached the castle. We'll go inside and explore in just a moment,
but first, I kind of want to explain just a bit of the story. We've got a nice car passing by.
It's so quiet here. That's just one small thing. You can hear the birds and everything. Anyway,
so the story behind this castle is that basically there was an old Prussian king in this area,
and the son, in the end of the 1800s, 1890s or something, he went to Germany. He went to this
really famous castle there, and while he was at the castle, he found the princess, and he fell
in love with the princess, and he was trying to tell her, you know, come back to Estonia with me,
come with me, come with me, and the girl said that she loves him and everything, no problem there,
but the problem was that she was so fond of her dad's castle that she didn't want to leave the
castle, and so he made a deal with her. He said that if I build you the exact same castle, will
you marry me and come with me, and she said yeah, so he was all happy, so giddy, he came back to
Estonia, and he started building this huge castle then, and it's like an exact replica of the castle
that's in Germany, and so then, let's see, so this happened like 1890s over the next like maybe like
10 years or something that they got all the frame up, and then they were starting to do all the
interior designing, and then they got a letter that the princess had died, and so then the guy
was very very sad, the guy fell ill, and he ended up dying too. He was actually on a trip over to
like St. Petersburg, which is only like, you know, maybe like from here, maybe like four hours by
boat, but anyway, so he's in St. Petersburg, he died there, and he never actually stayed in the
castle, so they brought him his body back, and then they put his body, even though he was dead,
inside the castle, so he could sleep at least one night in his castle, and then they married him,
they buried him with the rest of his family, so, and then the castle was basically kind of left
to rot, and the people were really respectful of it, because they all understood the royalty,
and they felt really bad about it, and so then it stayed pretty well preserved, even through like
the Nazi time, that then they built, the Nazis built an airstrip over here, and then during the
Soviet time, then let's see, so then the Soviets came here, and they started building fighter jet
blockades, which we'll get to in just a second, and so then they wanted rocks from it, and they
wanted to do some treasure hunting, and so these Soviets, and they came in here, and they started
ripping down the walls to use the rocks for building bunkers, and they raided all the
treasury stuff, so it's pretty much just left to the shell now, but it's been preserved now,
to like, nobody touch it, just leave it the way it is, so let's go check out the inside,
it's a really kind of like sad place, it's like a crushed dream, it's sad, because it's such a
beautiful building, and I really wish it would have been preserved, I wish the Soviets wouldn't
have raided it, anyway, so now we're going to go over to the fighter jet runway, which is literally
like a hundred feet away, I don't know if it's closed off though, so I guess we'll see if we can
actually go walk out onto the runway, wait that's a mud, actually not, here's the spot I was tripping
in mud, get past that, it's actually right here, so I'll keep going out into it, but it's a
proper, I mean Soviet fighter jet runway, so let's go check it out, so weird to walk on like an abandoned
empty fighter jet runway, it's like silent here, so now here we're coming up on the first of the
two runways, it's really fascinating, because obviously there's no reason why a tree should be
there, you know, so it really just goes to show that the place, ever since the Soviets left in
1991, it was left abandoned, it's like 1990, I think they stopped using it, it was used for the
interceptor fighter jets, the ones that would intercept, obviously, but, and so ever since
they left, it's not been in use, so it's just a big weedy runway that goes off into the distance,
there's another one on the parallel, but I think there's also some bunkers up here, so we'll go
see if we can go scout out the fighter jet bunkers, I just came off the side of the runway, I'm just
walking down the entire thing, it's long, I forgot, it's a fighter jet runway, of course it's going to
be long, but in this part, off the side, but obviously nobody's over here, because it's still got
all the tires and everything from the Soviet times, there's some buildings back there, but I had to walk
through, like, the woods part to get to it, so I'm gonna keep walking, because I think there's some more
over this way, but interesting, well, it seems to be that I've walked too far, I'm not going to show
too much behind me, I'm going to pretend like I'm just looking straight ahead, but back that way,
you can see there's fenced off military trucks and everything, that apparently I unknowingly
walked onto the military base, from what I understood, it was an abandoned runway, but
it looks like it's a new installation, there's newer trucks, it's a new fence and everything,
so maybe they brought it back into operation, I don't know, maybe it's because of the whole
Russian aggression stuff that's going on right now, maybe they opened it up in the last few years,
I don't know, but I'm just going to keep walking back this way, I'm not supposed to keep walking
that way, so we'll go see if we find anything else on the other side of the runway. Okay, now
I'm walking across the side of the airfield, away from the military, like I was saying, I actually,
I can't really talk about it, I wasn't going to pull up my camera and just start vlogging right
in front of them, but there's a huge chain link fence, big signs in Estonia and everything that
say, like, stop, halt, military, and then it had, like, no walking, and then it also had, like,
the sign, like, you're on camera, so very nicely, we're just going to walk away, hopefully no one
says anything, so as I'm walking over to the other end of the airfield, then there's this stuff,
I'm really hesitant to go into these kinds of post-Soviet buildings, because I never know if
there's actually, like, never know if there's actually someone inside of it, I don't know,
it looks like a munitions building, maybe, but let's walk around to the other side,
I wonder if there's any aircraft holding areas over here, there were some at that military zone,
obviously I couldn't film it, but they put on new gates and everything, and it was
newly refurbished, so let's come over here, we'll see if we find any old ones,
okay, we've made it through the brush patch, and this is the other runway now,
this one actually looks like a proper runway, that's been cleared out and everything,
it actually makes me concerned that if it is an active runway, that maybe I shouldn't be walking
over here, oh, I'm getting snagged, I'm, you know, when Soviets build airfields like this,
I don't really want to walk through the grass to find a new path, I would not be surprised if
there's landmines or any of that kind of stuff in there, maybe it's been cleared out, I don't know,
this one looks like a proper runway, maybe this one could be functional now, I'm going to walk
on the side, okay, so I kept walking and walking and walking, now as you can see we've reached the
end of the runway, I guess it's not very often that you get to say you got some good exercise,
some machinery scared me, I'm like always like looking to like see if there's a plane, if there's
a plane coming, I don't know if it's a small plane, if anything, because it looks like an active
runway, at the other end there's like rubber and everything on the ground like indicating that's
been used, so anyway, now like I said, it's not every day that you get to walk on an abandoned
Soviet runway, but our prize did work, because it appears over here that I see some remnants
of some fighter jet garages, so we'll go see if we can figure it out, I don't know,
see like there's a truck on the side, maybe there's people there, maybe they're actually
doing something, maybe I'm where I'm not supposed to be, I thought this was just an abandoned runway
in all fairness, I thought it was abandoned, turns out not so abandoned, all right, let's go check it out,
we turn out to be lucky, here's another one, actually another one, it's not just one, I see
one, two, three, four, five, six, seven of them, some of these bunkers in this area, let's go see if we can
look inside, I take that back, a magical number eight coming into view, now of course you can
imagine, you can see how they're all covered up with grass and dirt and everything, I mean it's
pretty obvious, I mean if you see the runway that you know there's going to be bunkers here, so
it's kind of hidden, but of course it used to be big sliding doors, and other than that it looks
pretty empty, I highly doubt that there'd be any, you know, remnants, hello, actually here you can
see this is where the doors would swing open, this big second one here, this one appears to be in
the best shape, there's no graffiti really on this one, and this one still has all of the
color-coded markings, so I'm assuming then this area would be walking, and the fighter jet would
fit on this side, 1991, I'm assuming that's what it means, obviously this would be one of
the original markings, this one's a good one, since this one's in really good shape, you can see what it
used to be like, and it's surprisingly cleared out, you know maybe this is for when you start the jet,
that it's basically a tunnel to push all the air out, rather than making a huge boom, and as well
with this fourth one, I'm going to climb on top actually, because I want to see the sunset, sunset
probably in five minutes or so, but this one you can see some people graffitied on it, I can't see
the region here, the fighter jets, but like I said this one you can actually also see the color
scheme still here, this looks like a bed springs, it looks like a torturous kind of playground,
this rope swing, I don't really want to play on this, it's like some really bad soviet nightmare,
okay let's go to the top, golden up here, yeah and like I said there's four more of them,
anyway let's sit up here for the sunset, and then we'll go.
Okay time to come down now, when the sun sets it's time to leave these military sites like this,
I'll put like the link up there, I'm in Montenegro, a really scary experience at a military site like
that, submarine tunnels after dark, and you probably saw in the clip like some of those
planes going across, those were russian planes that are trying to avoid EU airspace, and so
they're all going across the northern coast of Estonia. Anyway that's going to wrap up the video,
the gopro is just about dead so it's going on and off, so time to end the adventure,
I'll see you guys later, good night!
