Join me as I explore Aotea - Great Barrier Island Nestled in the Hauraki gulf 100km from my hometown of Auckland and 20km off the Coromandal peninsula Home to around 1500 residents living " Off The Grid " reliant on solar energy and collected rainwater. (I had to cut this trip short by a day due to issue with flight availability but I am going back soon for a fishing adventure with another youtuber )

Hey everyone, just landed. It's a beautiful day over here. Turned up to awesome weather.
The next procedure is to pick up the electric motorbike which is just over the road. I'm just
having a bit of a break but my ears, my ears got a bit sore on that flight. But yeah, what an
awesome day and awesome scenery as you would have just seen on the flight over. Absolutely stunning.
So yeah, I'm going to go get this electric motorbike from Motorbikes
and then we're going to go to the store, get some supplies and then I think we'll go up to
the campsite. First campsite for tonight is Haratonga campsite which is up the east coast
of the island. So yeah, that's the plan. All right, here we are everyone. Motorbikes.
Well, here we are everyone. I'm on top of a nice lookout now. I just picked up the bike.
Got the bike fully loaded up. Anyway, we'll have a better look at the bike soon. I'm going to head
off to the campground and put the tent up and everything and then we'll go for a bit of a tiki
tour. What do you reckon? All right everyone, got the entry to the campsite. Beautiful scenery on
the trip down. Man, that bike is awesome. Does about 50k. Got great brakes. Comfortable to ride.
Good cornering on that metal road as well. Spin the camera in for you. She's all packed up.
She's got a Woffin Ridge indicators. It's all legit. All my gear strapped on. Here's the campsite
down in here. So we'll go have a look around for a good spot to put our tent up and then we'll go
for a tiki tour over the dunes. Awesome. What a cool way to start the adventure. Check out this.
Found this little area here. Someone's had a tent here in the past. Been mowed down or something.
Bit of a clearing. There's a sheep over there. Got a little table. Massive campground. And I've got
this beautiful big S bend of a stream. I reckon there'll be eels in it. See if we can feed some
eels later. That'll be pretty cool. Yeah, beautiful. Anyway, set up camp and then we'll
plan whatever else we're going to do. All right everyone, set up. Bloody hot after that ride.
You might be wondering, oh, Sea West got a new tent. No. Well, yes. Naturehike, the company who
make the tent, sent this one to me for a review. So I will review it in the future. But this is
its first proper wild use. I've had it set up in the backyard. It endured 25 mils of rain
in three hours and there was no leak. So I'm pretty satisfied with it.
But yeah, it's much lighter than my other tunnel tent
and it'd be a good opportunity to come in to sit out. So I brought it with me.
Quite relaxing here. You can hear the sheep munch in the grass over there. I got the sun
beaming on me once the clouds move. Really nice. And it's just me here. No one wants to come here
in the middle of winter. I'm glad I brought my sleeping bag liner because it's meant to be
five degrees tonight. But you know, it's always a bit lower than that. Especially where I am.
So yeah, she's going to be a chilly one. But up and early, back into town. I might even get
breakfast in town. Who knows? Otherwise it'll be simple old porridge in the frying pan. All right,
on the menu tonight. Beef casserole from GoNative. You've seen me eat heaps of these
GoNative meals. Well, the butter chicken ones anyway. This one's a beef casserole.
Using my alcohol stove, which you would have seen in the last few videos. So originally this
cooker had an alcohol dish, but I found it's much easier to use my little alcohol stove thing inside.
It contains the flame much better, like so. Back to my hand. Put it on there.
Put our pot in. Just let that roar up a bit actually, in case it goes out.
So
all right, this is done. Suck all its oxygen out.
Nice hot chocolate. There we go. I haven't got any milk or milk powder unfortunately.
The key is to just use a little bit, not heap, of the chocolate sachet stuff.
Yum. Nice and hot. Beef casserole. I have tried this one, it's real good.
Do some bits of potato in there.
Cheers everyone.
just going for a bit of a walk before I hop in bed. Hop in the sleeping bag rather.
Get some body heat going to trap in it. Beautiful scenery down here. It's just amazing.
Bloody hell, it's cold. Definitely going to be four or five degrees right now. It's going to be a
cold one. But yeah, it should be nice and quiet. As you can see, not a cloud in the sky. There's
no rain forecast. I've got the primo weather for this trip. It was humming and harring weather to
push out dates here and there, but no, it really worked out. So I'm really happy about that.
Plan for tomorrow, get up, cook some breakfast. I'm going to go for a stroll down to the beach.
There's some big sand dunes out there. Can't quite see it, but it'll be epic when we get there.
I think I'll pack everything up and head back into town and we'll try a different campsite.
Something that's a bit closer. It'll help the longevity of the battery on the bike as well,
because it's quite a hike to get out here where I am. I'm going to jump inside the tent because
it is getting freezing. You can almost see it, how cold it is. Cold colours anyway.
Beautiful. I'm going to pop my head out later and check out the stars. Apparently it's just
amazing here. But yeah, I'm warmed up now, going for a bit of a walk. Jump in this new tent,
give it a real test. Well, as you can see, I'm in bed. It's absolutely freezing,
but I'm pretty tired, so I'm going to tighten myself up in this and go to sleep.
We'll see you in the morning. All right everyone, good morning. Literally just woke up and hopped
out of bed. Wrapped up because it is freezing. It feels very low down there. Zero right now. There's
a mist everywhere. You can't really see it, but it is freezing. I didn't think it was going to be
this cold. Wasn't forecast for it anyway. But I had a warm sleep. Glad I got that sleeping bag liner
and bivvy bag. Just helped to retain the warmth in the new tent. Done a great job. A little bit
of condensation, mostly on the outside. Nothing dripping on me, which is good. So yeah, the plan
for the morning is, because the bike's on four bars of battery, I'm really wanting to get back
to town and swap the battery and then come back and we'll do our breakfast and everything and
have a wander. Then we'll pack up and head into the city to a new campground. Well, I say city,
but you know, it's not. There's like two or three shops and an airport. So yeah, that's the plan.
Well, I'm almost there. Halfway. Just having a break. Check out this view. Spin the camera.
Check out that sunrise. Beautiful bit of coast. Anyway, not far to go. Almost at town. Pretty low
on battery. But yeah, I'm over most of the hills, thank God. All right, everyone. Fresh battery.
Oh, look at that. Look at those bars. Right, back to the campsite we go.
Had some brekkie and yeah, we'll move camp. Gonna move closer to town.
All right, everyone. Back at camp. Very cold but exhilarating ride
on the e-bike. Very impressed with that bike. So I went back to get another battery.
I would have had enough to get back, but I was just being cautious really with my
load and everything on it as well. It might have chewed up the battery a bit quicker. So
I think it was a wise move. Anyway, gonna have some porridge.
I'm gonna sit everything in the sun for an hour or so. Dry it all out as much as I can.
It's another beautiful day. Blue skies. And then we're gonna head back down towards Claris,
which is sort of the main run where the airport is. I'm gonna go check out another campground
called Medlins, which is right on a beach behind some dunes, I think.
So yeah, we'll go check that out. Maybe stay there the night.
It's basically turned into milk. Looks like it anyway.
Haven't got any fruit. Might buy some fresh fruit tomorrow's breakie.
I'm not sure if you can see me. The sun's pretty bright behind me. Porridge here.
Always forget the brown sugar, eh?
So I think before we go, I think before we head off from this campsite,
let everything dry for an hour or so after this breakie. I'll go for a walk over onto the dunes,
check out the coast, while I'm here anyway, because I probably won't come back.
All right, so I'm just heading out to the dunes out here at
Harataonga Valley. Harataonga Campground, if you will.
It's about 9.30am. It's still pretty cold. Just keeping an eye out for these cows or bulls.
Making sure they aren't chasing me. Oh wow. Mate, look at this. Hidden away.
What a beautiful bit of coast.
Just going for a wander around the rocks here. Checking out if there's any sea caves or anything.
I'm not sure what the tide's doing, so I'm not going to go far.
Pretty cool blowhole over there. We'll go check out.
The water's beautiful. Crystal clear. Slippery rocks. This looks like good squid territory.
Whills. Wow, bit of a blowhole. Let's go check that out. Man, what a wicked bit of coastline that is.
Definitely coming back for some fishing adventures. 100%. That blowhole was pretty cool.
It started big and it tapered down small and any air that got trapped sort of vacuumed and
sucked it back out and caused a bit of a sea spray. Tried to get some shots. Hopefully they come out
all good. She's a bit windy now. I'm going to head back to camp. Start packing everything up and
on the bike we go onto a new location. Harataonga Beach anyway everyone. Beautiful spot.
Right everyone. You might be wondering why I got the buff. So I don't get, I get bad windburn so
I'm putting it on so when I go down the hills on the bike it sort of stops it from happening
because I don't have any chapstick or whatever. Anyway, camp's all packed up. Bike's loaded up.
That's where the tent was. Just going to do a walk around. Make sure everything's clean. No rubbish.
Nothing left behind. No trace as they say. And then yeah, we'll be off back up in the foothills
and down into Klarus. And then yeah, jump on the phone and try to find a new campsite somewhere.
So yeah, we'll see you along the journey.
Just having a bit of a breather at the top of the hill. Almost at Klarus. Check out this view.
A bit of an onshore today but it's not too bad. Probably 10 knots, 15 knots.
Beautiful. I really am amazed at how well this bike goes. Especially with the weight on the back.
That's for 15, 16 kilo in there. Seven in my backpack plus my weight. Pretty good.
Absolutely stunning. Got a lovely view out here. Watching the animals go by. I think I'm going to
go get some dinner at the, that little takeaway thing. Trailer I passed earlier. It's just about
five minutes up the road. Get some mussels for dinner or something. Mussel burger.
Check out their food. Make it a bit easier.
Right everyone, gonna go get some dinner from this little takeaway on the side of the road.
See what they've got. It's a mussel sign so I'll get some little deep fried mussels or something.
Then I'm going to come back and hunker down because it is freezing.
Beautiful afternoon though. Right, let's go. Just ordered some mussels. Waiting for those.
We'll head back to camp. It's bloody freezing. All right everyone, they're a bit squished.
I got my mussels though. Deep fried battered mussels. I'm very excited for those. They're
going to keep me warm and I don't have to be out in this cold tent cooking dinner tonight.
And I love supporting little shops like that. Slow time of the year for them. I'm going to jump
in the tent because it is freezing. It's so cold. The wind chill on the bike at 50k is like minus
five. I ---- you not. It's terrible. Anyway, jumping in and having dinner. Right everyone, I'm in the tent.
It's freezing. Cooped up. Some of these got absolutely mowed on the trip home in my pocket.
But just little mussels deep fried. That's my dinner. Nice and simple. Mmm. Fresh grape. Very
mussels. Yummy as. Pretty simple night tonight. I'm just gonna eat this and go over some of the footage
I've taken on the trip. Transfer it over onto SD cards and yeah. Probably have a bit of a read in my book.
Right everyone, you can't see much. You can't see nothing in fact. I'm under the sleeping bags.
It is freezing. It's around one degree. So yeah, trying to use all my body heat I can to stay warm.
But I'll be sweet throughout the night. Anyway, we'll see yous in the morning. Gonna be a cold one
but beautiful. See you then. Good morning everyone. Good morning everyone. This could be
one of the coldest camping experiences I've had. I haven't had anything
below zero but this was one degree last night and right now apparently it's about three.
And I'm in Auckland but you know, this is cold for us.
Oh, check out this view.
I'm gonna add in another sashay. It's not enough with one.
Plus I'll eat it all. But watch out it burns quickly with this cooker.
All right everyone, we're packed up. All capsized, packed up. Everything's on the bike.
Gonna make a move. Like I said, leaving now 3pm today. Need to be there about 2.30pm
checking in everything. Been a great trip. Definitely be back. All right everyone,
just at the airport. All checked in. Taking my baggage. I've only got my one bag with me.
Here's my plane. Looking forward to the flight home. Having a shower and just having a lay down.
It's all kicking in now. I'm pretty exhausted. I haven't stopped moving really.
Back at the car everyone. Left my car at the Park and Fly place. It's only 30 bucks for the week so
cheaper than catching an Uber from home. Anyway, that wraps up this trip. Had an awesome time.
Bugger it was cut short but I still sort of covered everything I wanted to do really.
If I would have stayed another night I would have gone to another campsite nearby
but I would have been seeing the same stuff basically. I'll definitely get back there in
the future though. If you love that video give it a thumbs up and if you haven't subscribed
please do. Please consider that. I would appreciate that and it helps. So with that said,
hope you enjoyed it and we'll see you on the next adventure which will be next week.
Something new, who knows. See you later everyone.
