Well Niles, I heard you played really well today. Yeah you liked this song didn't you?
Let's celebrate! Do you want to hear about my round? Well, and then I hit a lovely third shot
into the par five, setting it up for birdie. Just missed the putt on the left hand side.
It just, oh, I just don't know how it didn't go in. And then on the 18th you would not believe
what happened. It was ridiculous. My ball pitched just short of the flag, spun back instead of
bouncing forwards and it's one of the hardest greens on there. But also on the 15th hole hit
a massive drive off there and then I only had a wedge into the green. But anyway, not a lot
happened really. How did you get on? Hey golfers and welcome to another video here on my channel
Nick Does Golf. Today is going to be a very interesting video. It's all about putting.
Do you ever count how many putts you have per round? If you don't, ask yourself why don't you?
The putts that you have every round that you play accounts for just under half the amount of shots
that you play. I believe the stat is about 43% of putts on average account towards your round.
So it's integral that you take this part seriously. It's all well and good driving the ball
miles, hitting a great second shot into the green. But if you simply cannot get it done
with the short stick, you are in big trouble and you're not going to see better consistency
and better results to reduce that handicap. One of the biggest things to have when putting
is confidence. If you've got confidence when you're standing over the ball, you're confident
on where your line is, confident about your stroke, you're certainly going to hole more
putts than somebody that doesn't. Like a lot of golfers, I have a love-hate relationship with
my putter. When I put well, I'm really pleased with how I'm doing it, good stroke. But when I'm
not, I don't feel confident at all over the ball. It's horrible. If you've ever been there, you'll
know about this. So this was with my yes putter, which I've had for a number of years. It's been
very good for me and I loved it when I first had it and I'm sorry to see it go. Nice head on it,
a little bit worn now as you can see, but it's served me well over the years. I've won a few
things with this. There's that technology that came out when the yes putters were in fashion,
just to get that ball rolling a little bit better with a little bit more topspin on it.
It's been great, but definitely time for a change. So that's what I've done. You're probably
wondering what club I have changed this to and what putter I'm now using. Check this out. This is
the Odyssey Stroke Lab putter. Check it out. Oh, hello wasp. It starts with the head cover,
look at that. Beautiful. So taking the head cover off, this is what it looks like.
It looks like a spaceship, but really nice. So you've got the insert there, which most of the
putters do have these days. Really nice looking putter. Nice thick white line on there right
across from the centre. This is one of the things I was looking for because I do sometimes struggle
with alignment. So that was something that was massive for me when choosing a new putter.
And as we come up, the shaft changes slightly. Now, as you can see, nice steel shaft on there,
and then it sort of goes up. It almost feels like graphite. I don't actually know
if it is graphite, but it looks very nice. And the grip is a thick one. This is something I've
been looking for because I feel like it benefits my stroke. It helps me take the
wrists out of it a little bit more and just feels, it just feels really solid.
The weight of the putter feels really nice. I can just feel like I could swing it just like a
pendulum, just in those basic golf bucks that you can find anywhere. The putters have certainly
changed since my first ever one that I had. Look at this. Look at this. My first ever putter,
my first ever club. Look at how small it is. Let me lie it on the ground. It is tiny. The grip
is pretty much half of the shaft length. I had this when I was four years old. Look where it
comes up to. It only comes up to my knee, but I can certainly still putt with it though.
So there's the details and the changes that I've made with my putter. Now it's time to put it to
test. So I'm going to play nine holes, counting the putts that I do on each hole. For nine holes,
you can average that around 15, 14, 15. So this is what we're going to strive for now.
So I'm here on the second green. The first hole I've made par, I've two putted. So there's two
putts already gone. So you can see how good these tall professionals are. Let's head over to the
second green and see if we can make that birdie putt.
Okay. So another par there, another two putts. So I'm up to four already. By the way, look at that
pin position right there. Who in their right mind as a green keeper would put it there?
That is disgusting. But onwards and upwards onto the third hole.
So I did what I said I was going to do. Left myself with quite a tricky short putt. It was
left to right, quite a lot of break on it, but managed to convert it. The putter just feels
really nice in my hands. I feel like the weight of the club is doing the work. I'm not actually
doing a lot. I'm just rocking my shoulders. Well, that's what I'm trying to do anyway.
I think one of the biggest misconceptions between golfers, when changing clubs,
specifically putters, is that you're just doing it for the sake of it. Well, no, not necessarily.
It might be because mentally, when you're over the ball, you just don't feel confident anymore.
You could have the best putting stroke in the world, but mentally, if it doesn't look right
No, not that thing. The other thing, the putter. I can't believe I just said that.
But you get what I mean. So if it doesn't look right when you're setting up to the putter,
such as this. So for me, that does not feel comfortable. Also, when I take it back,
because there's not enough weight in the head anymore, and I'm getting a little bit stronger,
it doesn't feel like I can rock it backwards and forwards, nice and straight on the way back,
and straight on the way through. I feel like my putting stroke is pretty much doing a figure of
eight. So it might be that you need to change your putter. Because you've changed your stroke,
you might have a little bit of an arc in it. It might be because you want a little bit more
weight in the head. I think with putting, it's just personal preference, really. I've had
different shaped putters, ones that look like spaceships, ones that look like a bread knife.
It's just total preference. And of course, it can change. So don't be afraid to make a change,
because it can give you a new lease of life. So back to the action. Par 4, fourth to come.
Another good birdie opportunity. So fourth hole, two putted. First put wasn't brilliant,
but managed to get it down there. Probably a little bit tentative because of the downward
slope. So solid par there, really. And the par 3, just really solid putt for that first one,
really gave it a chance. Just missed it on the low side, but from that distance,
I'd be more than happy with that. I think it's important to note that Odyssey, specifically
manufacture putters. They are always looking to get that extra edge with their designs,
their manufacturing. This is one of the draws towards Odyssey for me. I've used Odyssey putters
before, and they are really good, solid pieces of kit. You'd be stupid not to consider getting
an Odyssey putter. They are always one of the market leaders in this specific region.
Putting is an art. It's nothing like hitting a full shot, totally different mechanics. And if
they're just specifically choosing to manufacture putters, it just makes perfect sense in my opinion
anyway. But putting is personal preference. So it's totally up to you how you wanted to do that
and what makes you go for it. If you're just starting out, try and get a half decent putter
that's going to work for you, just to help you get the first few years, months, whatever it may be
out the way, so you can focus on getting a good stroke. Then you can upgrade and look at getting
something more specific for your stroke and for your eye. So one under through five holes,
let's see what we can do on these next couple. As you could probably tell by that last put,
that nearly missed on the left hand side. It was a good stroke. I was pleased with that.
But took a little bit of a bubble and nearly missed the cup. I would have been really annoyed
with that because there was a little bit of a cock up with the tee shot. Not going to lie,
I miss clubbed massively. But oh well, got the part. So we're two under to here. We've made
11 putts so far. So we're on track for that 15. But two hard holes to come. Let's see how we get on.
Oh dear, oh dear. That wasn't in the plan at all.
So I've just decided not to play this hole very well at all. Don't know why, don't ask.
But I hit that second shot really well and it went straight down the target line of my feet.
I was going to aim at that bunker with a little bit of a fade, just so I could get it there.
And it stayed bullet straight, which is quite annoying because I nutted it. Let's hope the
short game and the new putter help me out. So really happy with what I did there. Great bunker
save. Got a little bit of help from the fringe, not going to lie. It did hit the downslope just
like I intended, of course. And it shot forwards lovely, left me about four or five footer,
which I tapped straight in to the middle of the hole. I believe that's what they called a
That wasn't easy. This has put me on 12 putts for the eight holes that I've played. So we are
currently below average, which is great. With one hole to go, I'm going to try and see if I can get
13 putts for nine holes. That is a really good score, especially for those putting stats.
Saving par there has enabled me to stay at two under for the eight holes that I've played.
Par five to finish. Let's see if we can get that putter red hot and finish on three under par.
So with the Odyssey Stroke putter that I've bought, things that it's going to help me with
is one, confidence, two, alignment, because it's got that big white mark in front of it,
so I can line the ball up. This is something that I've struggled with with my putting
for a long time. So I always have to make sure that I check what I'm doing when I set up to the
ball. If you don't have a good setup, you're definitely not going to put a good stroke on it
and you're going to make compensations. The key thought for me is that pendulum motion,
getting the butt of the club to point towards your belt buckle all the way through the stroke.
I had to miss the second and third shots out due to low battery. Isn't technology brilliant? But
hold that fourth putt and finished three under. Managed to get one putt for the last three holes.
How good is that? So chuffed to bits, I'm going to conclude back at home. And we're back home.
Just made it in time before my battery on my phone nearly run out. Time was of the essence
on that last hole. To sum up that round, I hit 13 putts. That is quite low for nine holes.
Don't know what it would have been if I'd played 18. Probably would have got between,
I don't know, 27, 28, 29. Something around there. My confidence has increased since I've added this
putter. It looks good. It feels good. The ball comes really nicely off the face, which is great.
These are some of the key things that you need to consider if you are changing your putter.
If you're not rolling it well with your current one, you need to work out why you're doing that
firstly. If you've had it for a long time and you're simply not getting on with it,
why not make a change and get a new putter? You'll be surprised what it does. It might bring a new
lease of life to you and make you putt better. There's no harm in getting a new one and switching
between the two. For the Odyssey Stroke Lab putter that I have, it swings really nicely
on the way back and on the way through, which is what I'm looking for. I just felt with the
putter, it was so light that I wasn't able to do that and almost tried to block it off and
the head of the club wasn't releasing. Also, I'd fell out of love with looking down over the ball
with that putter head behind it. Feeling comfortable over the ball is the number one priority.
You need to make sure that you're doing this and this might mean that you need to change your
putter. So it's definitely a thumbs up for the Odyssey Stroke Lab for me. Guys, if you've liked
