-Local LONDON Travel Guide 🇬🇧 _ Peckham, Brixton & Other Hidden Gems
Today I'm taking you to seven London spots only locals know and obviously there are hundreds
around the city which is why I'm going to be focusing on South London, Peckham, Dulwich and
Brixton in particular. This is the area I've been living in for the past two years so I know it
really really well and I'm super excited to share it with you. In order to get around I'll be using
a Brompton bike and I'm going to show you how you can win one of your own but before that let's hop
on and drive to our first location. And here we are. Peckham used to be considered quite rough
around the edges but over the past decade it's turned into a really incredible quirky artsy and
cosmopolitan neighborhood. Before we go on our tour let me quickly tell you a little more about
this Brompton bike deal. Until the 16th of July you can enter a raffle on charitystars.com who
are giving away a Brompton bike, helmet and travel bag. You can enter for just £10 and the
proceeds go to charity hence the name Charity Stars. This particular campaign is supporting
an organization called War Child which works with children affected by conflict in places like Syria,
the Central African Republic and Afghanistan. So even if you don't win you'll be supporting a
really worthy cause. The link is in the description below so go check it out.
Alright back to Peckham and more specifically Copeland Park. The complex was conceptualized
as a way to bring local creatives together and give them a space to share their crafts with
the public. Currently there's a ceramics shop, a yoga studio, a record shop, a rooftop film club,
a Palestinian pop-up restaurant, a gym, a fashion store and Kampai, the UK's first sake brewery.
The most famous building inside Copeland Park is the Bussey building. Dating back to the 19th
century it was named after sporting goods manufacturer George Gibson Bussey. This is
where they made cricket bats which were used by the likes of WG Grace, one of the most famous
cricketers in history. Right around the corner from Copeland Park you will find Peckham Levels,
a really cool converted car park. It's set to reopen on June 21st but you can still visit now
by booking a yoga session or a table in the food hall. There's also Frank's, arguably the coolest
rooftop bar in all of London with some of the most incredible views of central London.
Behind me you can see something called Bold Tendencies. It's a current exhibition, they've
got loads of different pieces and explain to you what they mean in case you can't work it out like
me when it comes to modern art. And there behind me is Frank's proper, you can get food, you can
get drinks and it's open from 11 a.m until 11 p.m so if you wanted to spend the entire day here
you could but most importantly what you come to Frank's for is the view. And let's not forget
about Peckhamplex, my favourite cinema in all of London for one reason and one reason alone,
the tickets cost £4.99, that's basically unheard of in London and they do show all of the most
famous contemporary films so I go there a lot. Okay now let's get on our bikes again and head to
our next destination, Nunhead. Welcome to our second location. So London has something called
the Magnificent Seven and although it sounds like a group of superheroes it is very much not that,
it's a group of cemeteries and we are in one of them right now. It's called Nunhead Cemetery
and it's probably the least known of the seven but I think where people should know about it
aside from beautiful historic architecture and some stunning ornate graves, it is also a local
nature reserve and there are loads and loads of birds flying around. If you keep your eyes peeled
you might see a few woodpeckers and even some tawny owls. I like to come here when I want to think
and reflect because it's so peaceful and quiet and green and you really feel like you're miles
and miles away from London although there's one spot where you can actually see St Paul's. I'm
going to take you up there right now, follow me.
Our next stop is the affluent Delwich village. It's just 17 minutes by train from central
London. It has incredible architecture, it has golf courses, horse riding trails, in short it has
everything that you would expect of a really posh village and like I mentioned that's pretty
incredible given its proximity to central London. I like to come here for nice restaurants and walks
in Delwich Park. I also like to visit Delwich Picture Gallery and by I like to visit I mean
I've been meaning to visit but lockdown has made that made that pretty difficult.
This is Horniman Museum, one of my favorite museums in all of London. It was started by
Frederick Horniman, a rich businessman who inherited his father's tea business, Horniman's Tea.
According to him, he built a museum to bring the world to Forest Hill and provide an opportunity
for people from all walks of life to see and learn about global craftsmanship but it's also
important to note that his work in the tea trade was largely grounded in exploiting people who
lived in faraway corners of the British Empire. But whatever we think of old Freddie, the museum
and gardens are absolutely spectacular. You get some incredible views, alpacas or llamas, alpacas
I think. A medicinal garden where you can learn all about the plants that grow there
and free entry to all of the exhibitions aside from the aquarium and the butterfly house where
you have to pay a small fee. Like a lot of the places we've seen so far it is pretty peaceful
and quiet but don't worry if you want to shake things up a little bit we're about to hop on our
bikes and see something that's got a little more energy to it so let's go. Very soon we're going
to come up to Brockwell Lido and not only can you go swimming there it's also a stunning historic
structure and has a really cute cafe overlooking the pool. This is actually my first visit there
and one thing to bear in mind is that the pool is not heated so yes it does get pretty cold but in
my opinion it's very worth it. Welcome to Brixton. Brixton is our final stop but we do have two
sites here and this is our first. It's called the Ritzy Cinema and it is South London's oldest
currently functioning cinema. It was built back in 1911 but back then it was known as the Electric
Pavilion and it was built with 750 seats so a massive structure with an organ on one side because
the films that they were showing back then were silent films so they had music to accompany them
but right now they do show contemporary films that have sound. It's just Brixton man it's so loud I
hope you guys can hear me. So that's the Ritzy Cinema and now we're going to walk around a little
bit because Brixton is absolutely gorgeous. It's got loads of street art, loads of really cool cafes
and restaurants. It's wonderful for nightlife. My friends and I come here a lot outside of lockdown
when things are open. We actually have a favourite club that I'm going to take you to right now just
to show you the outside. It's called Blue's Kitchen here in Brixton. There are several
dotted around London but this is the best one certifiably. The thing I love most about Brixton
is just how diverse it is. Similar to Pecco where we started it has a hugely international population
which is reflected in all the shops and especially the food. Speaking of food I'm going to take you
to our last location now which is Pop Brixton. It's a really really cool space that has 55
independent shops ranging from food to fashion designers, there's a community barber shop
and there's even a youth radio. All right what a day! I really hope you guys enjoyed this video
and don't forget to check out the charitystars.com link in the description below for a chance to win
one of those incredible electric bikes. I really could have used an electric today because I'm
so tired now. It's been a really long day so I'm gonna nap and you guys just hit the subscribe
button and give me a thumbs up hopefully and I will see you next Friday in a new video. Good night!
