Friends! Today we step back in time and talk about our original plans for the chicken garden after a throw away comment on Thursday got everyone suggesting to just build a fence instead. Hint - that's not the plan :) We also start to build & install our main door frame and water glass some eggs!

We're finally building our door opening. It's day 76. Before we start today's video we wanted to
take a minute and talk about a few things from last week that kind of got taken out of context.
Charles didn't happen to just throw out this line of adding a fence to the top of our wall.
Right or we could build it so that we could add like a like a fence on top of it somehow or
And that has never been in the plan. No not really. I don't know why I said I was just
kind of like throwing ideas out. A lot of you really lashed on to that and we love all the
comments but we wanted to take a minute and kind of clear up like the goal for the chicken garden
and why we are not just putting up a fence. Right yes. Now we live in the high desert of Arizona.
The sun is intense. Our winds are crazy so that is why we're creating this wall to begin with
to protect the plants from from sun and wind. Right but also like the bigger goal of this was
to create a beautiful functional space that we can like walk through this garden harvest things but
also it doubles as the chicken area right so like it all works together and so our our goal with
this isn't necessarily to get it up as as fast as possible. Right obviously. Obviously. I think
we've been going pretty fast. Okay. But yeah like this is it's not just a garden sort of like this
wasn't just a shed. I think maybe sometimes we have bigger goals for our simple projects that
it's not apparent at first glance. Guys out here on our property our goal is to create beautiful
functional pieces of art like this is a sculpture a piece of art that we get to live in and work in
and be in. We love being in this space and socially like there's a feel that is important
to us like when we're putting this stuff together. So that was something we wanted to continue with
all of our buildings even our chicken coop we want it to be a beautiful art piece that's
functional. Yeah so all that being said yes we have hit the dip in the project and if you don't
know what the dip is it's a book by Seth Godin and it talks about how during any project you know you
start here and you get really excited because it's the beginning of a new project and everyone's like
yeah we're ready to do this and then you get a bunch of work done on it and you get real even
more excited about it you feel like you're on top of the world and then you dip right and you get to
that point in the project where you you're tired like you've made a ton of progress but you
you keep thinking about all that you still have to do and it kind of discourages you
and that's kind of where we're at but you know what that's natural it's totally okay to not be
like super psyched about your project all the time sometimes you just got to show up every day
and get it done. Yep. So we're gonna get through the dip here and we're gonna finish this thing.
We're not adding a fence. No no no we're not it's a wall. It's going to be a wall it was always going
to be a wall it will forever always be a wall. It's just going to be shorter than we thought
because we're trying to find that balance between protecting the plants from the intense winds that
we get occasionally but also protecting it from the sun but like letting enough enough light in
it's like a really weird delicate balance and even like full sun plants out here still need shade.
Right. So and we we do we've already thought about lots of ways to
take part of those walls and cover areas and make little mini greenhouses like we've got all kinds
of cool ideas that we haven't really talked about too much yet but we need a wall for that to happen
so the outside will still be a wall I don't think there's going to be a fence on top of it I'm sorry
that I said that I don't know what I was thinking. I'm sorry that you said that. Me too. But anyway
we're going to continue building this wall and get this project done as quickly as we can. Thank
you all so much for all of your input we love you so much. Now to the video. Oh my goodness it's so
windy we got to build this door opening and then we've got to put it up there before we do any more
earthbags so let's get this done.
I just got so blind I can't see
I think I might take a year off you wasting all my time but it's nothing
and I feel just fine I have this burning hose in my pocket I had a little bit of faith but I lost it
and I feel just fine and I feel and I feel just fine but I'm free now
I'm a little bit late from the reroute a couple quarters on my eyes can you see now
and I feel just fine and I feel just fine feel just fine and I feel and I feel just fine
keep trying to find my way
Welcome back to Make It Monday. Today we are water glassing eggs. We're going to be preserving my
four dozen eggs or at least however many I can fit in a one gallon jar. Let's get started.
There's really just two important rules to water glassing eggs. One is to make sure that you have
fresh clean unwashed eggs. You don't want straw or bits of chicken poop on them. Make sure you
choose the cleanest ones you have and store them in your container pointy side down as best you
can. Next we're going to measure out our pickling lime and for every one ounce of pickling lime
you need to add one quart of water. So in this one gallon jar I'm going to add two ounces of
pickling lime and two quarts of water. Make sure your lime has dissolved in the water completely
and then pour over your eggs and that's really all there is to water glassing eggs. You can store
these for up to a year like this it just needs to be in a dark cool environment so we will be
storing these in our solar shed behind our bed. This is a great way to preserve eggs if you have
abundance and you know that your chickens are going to start slowing down in the winter just
go ahead and preserve them while you have plenty of extra. When you go to use your eggs just make
sure you wash them off completely. You don't want any lime on your eggs when you crack them. I hope
to be using these eggs in a pasta class coming up soon. And now you know how to preserve your eggs.
Okay we got it locked in place now we got to lay the bags on it to really hold it down tight.
Nine-Nine's very excited about the win.
Okay we're going to win the next like three days so we're going to put everything up
flip the wheelbarrows over tie everything down because it's going to be crazy but hey we got
our opening locked in which is very exciting so now we got to build the window openings we need
to go get more wood because we decided to make more of them right yeah so we got to do that
tomorrow and that's when we will see you tomorrow.
