Hello friends. In this video we're going to talk about why your house feels sad,
a few housekeeping and home decor tips that will
easily turn those feelings around. Before we begin,
be sure to subscribe to my channel. All right, let's get started.
Number one, you need to organize. I always tell people
you want to start here before you begin to decorate
or you're going to be decorating over clutter and that is not a good look.
Organize for function, not just aesthetic. If it's
just for looks, you're not going to stick with it.
If when you come through the front door and right at that front door is a bowl
to pop your keys right in there, that's going to be perfect.
But if you have to go four more steps because you've created a hook on the
wall, you might not do that. You want to keep
things easy and that's how you create a habit. Don't
be afraid to purge. I am not good at this. I really
struggle with this. It's not that I'm a hoarder,
but I do have trouble letting stuff go and I read a book by
Marie Kondo. She's the queen of purging. Check out her book because it really
helped me let go of things and once I did, it was cleansing. It was almost like I
could breathe. Number two, if you only have
overhead lighting, then the mood it just makes me depressed.
Lighting is so important and when I go into a lot of homes,
I realize people don't really realize how changing their lighting can change
their overall mood. If you only have overhead
lighting, it's not warming. You want to have
different lamps in a room, different lighting. You can have overhead,
but maybe have some lamps. I like to keep bulbs
at 60 watt or 40 because that's what creates the mood in a room.
So take a look at your lighting in your room and see how it looks
and if you only have overhead harsh lighting,
you need to add some soft lighting because it'll change everything.
Here are a few examples of harsh overhead lighting
versus soft ambient lighting. Notice how the shadows
are much harsher in this photo. In this next photo,
you'll see how these lamps just softly light up the room
in different areas and begin to create just a warming and comfortable feeling.
Number three is when you have too many accessories.
When you have too many accessories, you can create visual clutter.
Visual clutter can actually affect our mental health.
Feel how you feel versus when your room's clean versus when it's dirty.
Even if you have accessories that are stunning and beautiful,
having too many of them can overwhelm the mind.
Scale down and remember the rule of three. So what do I mean by that?
For me, I like to do the rule of three. If I have a console,
I'm going to put a lamp on it. That's one. Maybe I'm going to put some photo frames
over here. That's my two. And in the middle, I might put some
greenery. That's my three. That's my decorating in threes.
Following that rule, while it's not a hundred percent a set rule,
but following that rule helps you keep organized and keeping that visual
clutter at bay. Number four, your wall decor and
furniture are not to proper scale. I find most people are afraid to go
big on a wall and what I see a lot of times is a lot of little pictures
and then you have all this blank space around the entire wall.
Don't be afraid to put a big picture on the wall.
It fills up the whole wall and brings the whole design
in. Along those same lines, choosing furniture that is too small has the same
effect. I've seen this often where someone gets a big tv.
Usually the husband has to have that big tv and the console that they choose to
go under it is either way too short so that tv looks like
it's floating or it's too narrow. You need to choose a
big large console and then that whole design
comes together perfectly. Number five, dead plants.
Is there anything sadder than a dead plant clinging to life?
Well, cared for plants promote mental health.
Now is it okay to have faux plants because you're not very good at growing
real plants? Yes it is but if you have faux plants in
your house and they're not cared for, meaning
they're full of dust, they're going to look just as sad
as a dead plant. I have a tip because I do have faux plants in my house
but I have a wonderful tip that I'll teach you
how to keep those faux plants clean. So here's what I use.
Foaming bathroom cleaner and you can only use this
on faux plants that are like more of a hard plastic. You don't want to use this
on faux flowers because that will ruin them.
But what you want to do is you spray this foaming cleaner on it, let it sit
for a minute because it's eating that dust.
Then you rinse it off, put your plant on a towel to dry
and that is it. It's clean, new and beautiful.
These are just a few ways that you can have peace
and happiness in your home. I hope these tips helped.
