In the early 2000s, you were diagnosed with breast cancer.
Tell us about that.
Well, I had just gone in for my annual mammogram
and feeling great.
And they said, you know, they did the mammogram.
And then I got a call to, no, that day they said,
we think we see something.
But we think it's nothing, it's not cancer,
it's probably just a little, you know, cyst, a little biopsy.
Well, it turned out it was, it was breast cancer.
And all I can say is when I walked in
and my doctor, the surgeon, said,
I have some good news and some bad news.
I said, oh, what do you want to hear first?
I said the bad.
And he said, you have breast cancer.
It's early, it's, you know, early detection.
It's a small tumor.
But my whole world just stopped
because I had two young children.
And I thought, you know, I said,
my first words were, will I be here for my children?
And he said, yes, you'll be here.
You'll be here for your children.
And I think, you know, what you don't realize
about breast cancer, it really affects the whole family.
And, you know, my daughter was to go
to a summer intensive in New York
for dance with Alvin Ailey.
She couldn't go.
My son comes to me and said, now look,
you'll take care of this and you're fine.
And he compartmentalized everything.
It'll be fine, right?
Tell me it'll be fine.
I said, yeah, it's gonna be fine.
And my husband, who's a doctor said,
you must be mistaken.
I called on the drive home.
You must be mistaken, honey.
I said, honey, yeah, yeah, I do.
And my mother, they couldn't believe it.
So I think really what saved me on all this
in my family was there.
My brother flew in.
But I had these great girlfriends
who saw me through this.
And I think they didn't have to,
they just were there to hear, to listen,
to take me to radiation,
to take me to lunch after every treatment.
And my family really took it on as,
you know, it was really stopped their lives, so to speak.
And I love to go to movies.
And when I was going through treatment,
my husband would go, he never loved to go as much.
Well, let's go to a movie.
Okay, all right.
And then after that movie, let's go to another.
I said, two in a night?
What?
Whoa, what?
So everybody went a little cuckoo,
except my girlfriends.
So I always say the power of girlfriends
is what saw me through that.
