Good day friends and welcome here from my garden
We will take a closer look at joints in this video so basically joints
In the outdoor area what options are available there and then I will show you the individual ones
Advantages and disadvantages and yes we will also look at some examples
Also I wish you a lot of fun watching the video the weather is a bit bad
But it's good it's now autumn and the rain was also urgently needed
So friends let's take a look at the first option here we have
Back then the terrace was built you might have seen it in a video I made back then
I have here the pond construction which is also briefly documented
We had this area sealed with an epoxy joint back then and yes I will
Let me now take a closer look at it in detail and
then go over the advantages and disadvantages again
So a benefit I can show you right away the weather here also seems a bit
It has just stopped raining here about 10 minutes ago and it has been relatively long
and heavily rained and yes you can see there is no water in the joints so epoxy joints
are usually all water-permeable here it also always depends a bit o
Coarser grains allow water to pass through
much more quickly than finer grains
Now let's take a look at concrete joints water
naturally stays on concrete joints for much longer
So is water permeability also a huge advantage even if you then end up with a slope
en you just have to accept that water doesn't always drain everywhere
Ensure the epoxy sealant is applied so that water drains properly
Sometimes it stays for a few more minutes even here on the surface there are a few minor ones
Small puddles where the water still stands but it seeps away in about
10 to 20 minutes Actually the water is completely gone then
Another major advantage of synthetic joint sealants is their ease of application so we need the
ere just to indulge or stay it always depends on whether one is looking for a component
but usually you just need to clean
the surfaces again with a fine broom
It is naturally excellent to use synthetic resin grouts for such materials
en you can see they are ribbed have holes and if you now put a concrete joint here
It would have been a huge spectacle during the
cleaning and it would have really taken several hours
So just walk over it and the surface is clean
Another advantage is that these synthetic resin joint mortars are all rigidly bonded mortars one has
also a solid joint and in solid joints weeds or other plants
It's hardly a chance to
grow in so that's definitely another advantage
The drawback of all epoxy resin grouts is that the price is simply very high
If you currently have large areas with wide joints where a lot of material is used
en it is not uncommon that the joint is more expensive than
the stone or the tile used on the surface
Another small drawback is I would also consider it only a minor drawback
dicate with all mortars it can happen that a small veil remains behind
The film which in principle disappears on its own over time and with weathering
It is not a processing error and it is not a material defect it's jus
on this synthetic resin film which then naturally also adheres to the stones when applying
remains but if you wait a year it should
have disappeared completely from all surfaces
If there areas where it doesn't disappear there are
corresponding cleaners but I don't think much of them for now
I think we should just wait until
the areas clean themselves up naturally
So here's another small tip I know that many manufacturers of grout materials
Say hey you can clean them with a pressure washer I generally recommend that to you
It's not worth it I completely advise against it because it always damages the surface
A little and then you can clean the surfaces maybe four or five times
It does not seem to have a negative effect but in the long run more and more of the surface is affected
and the joints will then become more porous and eventually they will tear and break apar
en completely clean and then you can actually go and clean the surfaces again completely
Renovate that is scrape out all the joints and re-point them
I don't know of a single type of mortar not even the two-component ones that are supposed to be permanent
Withstand Kärcher load so that doesn't work
Even if the manufacturers write that in their data sheets I would advise against it
So let's take a look at the next jointing material which is a natural stone joint mortar
Trass cement is always very
important because we have processed natural stone
Portland cement has the property of not blooming
later and thus the stones remain clean here always
Yes all cement-based grouts have the property of being waterproof
I don't want to judge this as a pro or a con right now it's always in the eye of the beholder
Traitors and always the efficiency that is pursued
But the thing is when working with concrete joints you always have to make sure there is a corresponding one
The slope that needs to be paved to drainage bodies like this one where the water then seeps in
because the concrete joints themselves do not allow water to pass through and if the
surface were built level here the water would still remain here for hours without
It evaporates of course but that would take a long time
Yes that would already be a disadvantage for one or another compared to concrete joints
Artificial grass joints where a green film can form more easily
I actually always perceive this as a natural patina and I wouldn't go there either
and somehow clean it not even with chemical substances or mechanical means
it just looks natural this way and yes
Yes in my opinion the biggest disadvantage of concrete joints is the expensive cleaning process
One must thoroughly clean the stones afterwards whether they are paving stones
ey are the ones we just saw or here are plates if you don't do it properly
Tut there's a cement film on the surface and it's very very hard to clean
There are also acids or other cleaners that can be used to
clean the surface again but ultimately it's just more work
In such bound cement joints of course no weeds can grow in them
Also this is naturally a great advantage just like with the synthetic resin joint mortars
So we're standing here on my driveway and here I once spread gravel
Sand and gravel are loose jointing materials that are very inexpensive and are actually used for filling gaps
Also the most common way of paving surfaces
Here I have spread a base gravel in a grain size that the ants cannot move
Find out so the pieces are so big that the ants can't move them
Rain can certainly help a bit the material and also a little bit
Rinse thoroughly so that you have to come back once in a while over time
The advantage of such jointing and sand joints is that they are also permeable
They are and if damages occur these joints are extremely easy to repair
You only need to go back if it's necessary which is much
more effort and costly with all the other available options
A disadvantage of all loose or unbound joints is that weeds can germinate
And here of course one must regularly combat weeds with appropriate
measures otherwise such an area quickly becomes unattractive
I will show you some suitable options right away
Here we have for example a loose base gravel that is really great
There is such a grain size where there are no zero fractions involved
This is a grain size of 1-3 mm which the ants cannot move out of place
You can have a beautifully dark joint if you want it that way
Of course you can also simply use sand which is also a natural building material
It has a nice appearance and I also find it beautiful
However it can of course be carried away by the ants
But even here there is sifted sand which is of such
grain size that the ants can never remove it entirely
So then I'll show you my gas collection here
The best way to remove weeds from paved areas
It is still thermal treatment There is also thermal
treatment using hot water methods and foam methods
where the water then kills the plant or the hea
Hot water reaches the root through this hot water process
This is not the case here with gas
This is an open flame that only damages the above-ground parts
You can then simply connect a gas torch as roofers use
Then you can combat weeds in this environmentally friendly way
So guys I'll now present what I think is the best fugue for the outdoors
Some people might now feel a bit teased but
that's always just a matter of perspective
It is simply the best way in my opinion to install joints in outdoor areas
So I've already set the camera to the right spots
This is a project here that I have been following a bit for a year now
I am trying to green the joints A whole part
of the moss that is in here has come on its own
I have also introduced a few individual species myself and
will now also go and introduce more plants in the marginal areas
They must be naturally stable and also remain small
I think it is not only by far the best fugue but also by far the most beautiful fugue
It is the most natural optic one can achieve for such a classic path
So as we can see now the moss here has grown very thick
And once this condition is reached which took about
half a year here then no weeds can grow in these areas
I just collect a little moss here and there
And here for example I recently added some fresh padding
This is also another one you can see the green coloring here this is also a different moss
And if you then press them into the gaps does it actually grow on its own
Autumn feels a bit more welcoming to me now because the weather is wet and humid
So that you don't have to water the areas here
So naturally the water permeability is also an advantage here
There is an unsealed area
So the biggest advantage of this fugue is that it's actually the only way to manage it
is a living joint
With other application methods such as the presented cement joints or epoxy joints
It always results in a dead area that is sealed off
And in this area plants still have a habitat and thus also animals
So I would already be happy and satisfied if I could achieve a small change of heart with it
For not all gaps need to be clean and sterile
Not every gap that is somehow green or has something growing in it is bad
There are also beautiful plants there that do not
look untidy like the moss here for example
I will also introduce you to more plants that have a flowering character
And they are also small and stable which you can definitely use for such a project here
So guys it's raining but that won't stop me from looking
for a few more mosses and plants here for the area
We will then harvest them partially and I will use them immediately
And I just want to show you if you're interested in such a project where you can find these mosses
So I didn't have to go far and already found the first moss cushions on an extreme habitat
Here the sun shines for ages and they only grow here on
a concrete base there is no soil or anything else
That means if we harvest these mosses here we can actually be sure they will survive in the joints
So where you will always find moss is on roofs
And here you can be sure that these mosses will grow easily in the joints
So then I don't need to look much longer
Here partly on the bark mulch the moss grows I just
need to collect it here like this
Then I took a look inside these flowerpots
There's a huge moss pad inside
I'll try to solve this right away with a knife
So where moose can naturally grow is any rocky surface
Here I have this stray stone in the front yard
And there are even many different types of moss on it
Here is also a particularly beautiful one
I will harvest a few of them right here
Well here's the result of just two minutes of searching right here in my own garden
That was really quite productive
I also have many different types
of moss I don't know if the camera focuses this clearly here
Here you can clearly see the differences
Then I still have a few sedum shoots that you can just throw
down And they usually take root right away
Here we have another type of moss that I also found on a rocky surface
Yes and we will now introduce them here
So then I have these sedum shoots here
I will just bury them slightly at the break point here
And I'm then curious to see if they will grow
This Sedum plant is not permanently foot-tolerant
That's why I won't plant them in the center row but rather more in the border area
So I now have a lot of moss here in various types
But the weather is quite uncomfortable now and the sun is about to set
That's why I'm going in now and will plant the rest tomorrow
So I'm taking you in now as well
And then I will show you again what possibilities there are
to introduce blooming plants or generally other plants here
So I had just promised you that I would introduce suitable seeds
About plants that can be
planted in the gaps That
works very well I will do that next year as well
And then I will present the entire project to you
once again like this then also with blooming plants
You can of course also and there's nothing against it if
you now have plants growing in your garden that are already growing
You can also harvest them and insert them into the corresponding joints
So when choosing plants there are a few things to keep in mind
First you must ensure that the plants can tolerate full sun
Then you must choose plants that need very little water
You don't want to go and water the paths if you'll excuse the expression
Then with the fertilizer requirement they must be
plants that grow on very nutrient-poor and barren soils
They can also grow in such small and narrow gaps
Yes and another important point is that the plants are wear-resistant
There are plants that are more wear-resistant than others
The wear-resistant ones should always be placed in the path there
Where you actually go then
And then you can naturally also place a few other nice plants which
if I may say are in the edge areas
Then there's also a small step-like elevation
which makes the whole thing even more lively
So here we have for example thyme
It stays very small and definitely gets along with the location
As seed it definitely works
Fette Henne which I had already shown
you is also an example of one I used
These are various species of sedum also available as seeds here
Then I also have stonecress here
This is very demanding when it comes to germinating
In that case you can also buy the plants ready-made
This can also be done with seeds but the germination is very limited
Another two flowering candidates are the Roman
chamomile and the feather grass also as seed on plants
You will definitely get along with the location
So that was naturally just a small selection of plants
I will put together a small package for you
That means if you're interested in the green
or living bird you can order it through me
I will then prepare a
seed mixture mixed with
already grown plants which you can then order
I will also leave my
email address again in the
video description Then just send me an email
Then I will gladly send you the items as a complete package
If you liked the video
I would naturally be happy to get a thumbs up
or a nice comment
or of course through suggestions or questions
You can contact me at any time
Then I wish you all the best for now stay healthy during
this strange time and then I'
ll just say see you next time
So friends I'm just now editing
this video here and as
is usually the case here you don't get very far because my two friends
They always manage to keep me from working
