This is basically steamed rice with different sorts of curries and side dishes
So, look at this beautiful plate which is flooded with curry
So good!
This is nasi kandar lying here
Nasi kandar itself is a famous northern Malaysian dish
You can obviously choose chicken, vegetarian in fact, with some vegetables
It's mainly curry dishes
Spicy but so good
I'm going to get the mutton now
Normally, mutton has a very meaty smell
This, they do not have it
I think the curry mixes very well with the meat itself
So, what you get is a very flavourful plate of curry rice
This is indeed one of the best nasi kandar here in Penang
I've asked many locals around and all of them recommended for me to come to Lying Clear Nasi Kandar
It has a great history, great food
Superb!
I'm going to continue digging in
How long have you been running the shop here?
Yeah, since 1930
What time does it start?
Lunchtime
Second round, at night?
Second round, at night
What time?
At night, 8 pm
8 pm, like this
Ah, okay
So, you all cook every day fresh?
Fresh...
Every day fresh
Every day fresh?
All of the Lying Clear family
Oh...
This is my sister and brother
That's the third generation
This is the third generation
So, you have been running here with no plans to change?
No...
You only have one stall?
Yeah
I asked the locals, is it just a tourist spot?
They said, no, it's also for the locals
There are so many things to eat in Penang
One of them is cendol
I'm at the very famous cendol stall here at Jalan King Kui
Remember that?
This is how it looks like
The very famous actor, Phua Chu Kang from Singapore was also here
There's a photo of him here
This is what cendol is all about
There's gula melaka, sugar, syrup
with ice, coconut milk
and this little green colour stuff
that looks like worms
but it's so good
So, it's time to dig in
It's so good that people are actually
all standing here just to have cendol
They do not have a place to sit
Just look at it yourself
Roaming in the streets of Penang after dinner
is such a great opportunity to experience the hustle bustle
from the brightly lighted food vendors
Like this guy here who sells roasted chestnuts
The aroma and the golden brown colour
lured me into buying a pack of freshly roasted chestnuts
Be it steamed corn or chickpeas
you have just so much more to choose from
Not to forget, fresh and colourful tropical fruits
or pickled fruits
What about dodo in Malaysian toffee-like confectionery?
Sweet, sticky and yummy
The next morning is for more food exploration
Off we go for breakfast
So, I was told that when you're in Penang
you have to begin your trip with
roti canai
which is actually this plate here
It's basically flour
They just flip it, pan fry it
You should actually have a look at how they prepare roti canai
To go along with it, of course, they have curry
I have here chicken curry, mutton curry and also dal
It's not so spicy
For dal especially, it's not spicy at all
It goes really well
What you should do is basically
flatten your roti canai with curry
Then, enjoy the goodness of it
It's good
When the roti canai soaks into the curry
You have to bite into it
Basically, this is a half boiled egg
and they would put it on top of the toasted bread
Now, the toasted bread is not just toasted in the machine
but it's using charcoal
So, the fragrance from the charcoal
will actually absorb into the bread itself
and that makes the bread even more delicious
Along with that, between the breads
there will be butter and also kaya
which is this coconut jam
It's also a kind of typical breakfast that Malaysians would eat
Half cooked egg
What they usually do is that they have a bit of soy sauce
and a bit of pepper
and they stir it
The toast that I told you about earlier
It's nicer like that
Not bad, huh?
Penang is known for various leek smacking hawker dishes
like popiah and fried oysters with eggs
It is a delight when paired with young coconut juice too
Chow Kway Teow are rice noodles
fried with seafood, Chinese sausage and some greens
Famous bowl of noodles in Penang is of course the Penang laksa
Now, there are many types of laksa
Penang laksa is meant to be slightly sourish, spicy
It has a whole mambu jambu in it
It is also the top 50 best dishes in the world, according to CNN
So, to know how good it is, you have to try it
because there are so many flavours in it
and the base of the soup is made from fish
So now, this is how it looks like
Some vegetables
As you can see, fishes
and this is actually the prawn paste
Now, I'm going to have some bite together with the soup
The usual laksa that I tasted is quite fishy
This one is very smooth
It's not fishy
Not fishy at all
Slightly sour
Not spicy, surprisingly
Just maybe a hint
It's really good
It's so warm here
Nevertheless, I'm going to finish my bowl now
What time do you wake up to cook?
We have to wake up at around 5 am
because in the morning, we have fresh fish coming
Then, we have to prepare for the fish paste
so that you can save it for tomorrow
How many hours do you cook?
5 hours
I'm saying the paste
Ah, the paste
Yes
Which paste is that you're talking about?
So, you cook this for 5 hours?
Yes
Then, after that, you put it into the soup?
Yes, you put it into the soup
You add water
You add some tamarind water
Then, you have to put salt
Then, all of the stuff
It's ready
Ah...
The most important stuff is that one
That one
So, that's your secret
Yes
It's a kind of Malaysian mochi
It's warm
So, what the uncle did there was to coat it with sugar and crushed peanuts
It's really good
So, after that, you have a bowl of laksa
In Penang, you can always get your mochi from the guy
Pair it up together with the sugarcane drink
Refreshing
Now, if you are in Penang,
remember to look out for these two grannies
who will serve you one of the best curry noodles you can find
She's the eldest sister and that's her little sister
They have been selling here for so many years
Still looking very strong
Very impressive
Hey...
This is pao sam
Pao sam?
Very good
Do you eat it every day?
Yes
Oh...
Very expensive
Very expensive?
So, I'm at the Ain Itam Red Market
Ain Itam Red Market
It's very near to the Kedlongsi Temple
So, as you go up, instead of turning right to Kedlongsi Temple
Go straight and there should be a junction where you can turn left
That is where the two sisters have been selling
these curry noodles for 60 years
So, she wakes up at 4.30 in the morning to prepare
and then sells it up to the afternoon
It's usually sold out
People would queue up for this bowl of noodles
Now, it's time to try
Hmmm...
One of the most flavourful curry noodles that I've ever tasted
There's squid in it
Sambal is good
Fits perfectly
I think this is really worth trying
So, if you're going to Kedlongsi
Before you go there, remember...
Before 12 o'clock, come here and eat it
I'm done with it
It's so good that I'm going to get another bowl
