Hey guys, Mike Chen here in Singapore.
One thing you'll notice right away when you come into this country is the amount of vending
machines.
There's vending machines for everything.
For drinks, snacks, flowers, toys, teddy bears, anime characters.
Of course, a lot of food vending machines as well.
Unfortunately, when I got into this country, a lot of the food vending machines, like the
chili crab vending machine, the pizza vending machine, bubble tea vending machine, a lot
of these closed down.
But there are still a lot of really cool ones around.
So today, we're eating nothing but vending machine food.
This is one I always come to whenever I'm in Little India.
A $2 freshly squeezed sugarcane juice.
Fresh sugarcane juice with a squeeze of lemon is amazing.
Not watered down at all, 100% sugarcane.
Again, $2 Singapore dollars, so about a $1.50.
That's such an amazing deal.
Especially whenever I'm around Little India.
I'm here a lot because I love the food here.
I get this every single time.
All right.
I'll go grab some lunch.
So lunch is going to be at the Suntec Convention Center.
Let me show you.
So this is a row of vending machines.
Check out what they have here.
Orange juice vending machine, or soy milk slash coffee vending machine.
Snacks here, more snacks here, drinks here, and then the chef in a box.
These meals change all the time, I think.
So today, there is homestyle chicken curry, chicken korma, nasi lemak bangus, green curry
prawn with rice, prawn chicken with lemon rice, and black pepper beef with rice.
Each dish ranges from $5 to $7 Singapore dollars, so about $3 to $4 US.
All right.
Let's eat.
Start with the chicken curry.
While you're waiting, they're showing you a video about the cooking process for the
dish.
Ooh, a counter just started.
So exciting.
Ooh.
Ow, ow, ow, ow.
That is very, very hot.
It smells good.
It's definitely hot.
Okay, there's good and bad things about this.
First of all, the rice is delicious.
The rice tastes like broken rice, like Vietnamese broken rice.
The texture of the rice is firmer.
It almost tastes like millet.
And the flavor is so good.
And because of that, each grain of rice is even more flavorful.
Very big plus on the texture of the rice and the flavor of the curry.
The curry is delicious.
Spicy.
The flavor is fantastic.
Very aromatic.
Not the bad, hard to swallow thing about this dish.
They should really change the name of this to curry Las Vegas chicken because this chicken
is one of the driest things I ever put in my mouth.
Oh, so dry.
So tough.
So hard to swallow.
I wish there was something else here besides the chicken, like maybe a potato or something.
They're going to give this dish a little softer texture.
There is really no saving how dry this chicken is.
I found something dried in the chicken.
The peas.
Wow.
Still going to eat it though.
Hopefully the next dish gets better.
Oh, I definitely need a drink after that one.
Let's try this.
There's hot milk, milk cocoa, chocolate milk, soybean milk.
Let's try the hot milk.
See what a hot milk is.
Normal sugar.
Let's do a little less sugar.
So this is a New Zealand hot milk with a little bit of sugar.
I mean, and that's literally what this is.
Just a very, very, very creamy, foamy, a little sweet cup of milk.
When I was a kid in China, we would sometimes have milk.
And the only way we drink it was to heat it up and add some sugar.
Get some more food.
Let's try the chicken korma.
While I'm waiting for that.
Hot and spicy potato chips.
This is very, very good.
It's spicy.
It's yummy.
There's a lot of chips.
Get my food ready.
So each of these dishes is created by a chef.
And they give you the chef name and photo on the dish too.
So this is chicken korma with tomato rice.
This chicken feels a little more tender on this one.
Rich curry.
The rice is definitely different here.
And it looks like it's infused with masala.
It tastes like a decent curry rice.
Definitely don't really get a lot of tomatoey flavor.
But the curry shines through.
It's nice.
Again, rice is flavorful.
Chicken is at an acceptable tenderness.
I mean, it's still dry, but I'm keeping my expectations really low here.
It's a pretty good curry rice that I got from a vending machine.
I think I can make it better.
Add some of the new and improved hot oil.
This is the crispy garlic.
I carry this around with me pretty much everywhere I go.
And it's way spicier and tastier than the previous version.
So if you haven't tried this yet.
If you haven't tried the crispy garlic with a regular hot oil.
Or the stir-fry black bean sauce.
Go to my website, mikeshotoil.com.
I'll put the link down below.
And right now for the holiday season, everything is 15% off.
I know I'm really biased.
I think this version is the best hot oil out there.
I really do.
And I do feel like this particular dish definitely needed some heat.
I think in terms of flavor, the last one was definitely better.
This one, the chicken is less dry.
So for something I bought out of a vending machine, that's pretty darn good.
Finish my hot milk with sugar.
This is the new one from the drink vending machine.
This is the soy milk.
Very frothy as well.
So this is the Nasi Lemak.
I think I found maybe the reason why these machines always dry out the chicken.
And in this case, my sambal is now a charcoal ball.
I think they heat this up way too long.
The chicken seems dry as well.
So here there's some omelet, chicken, dry anchovies, peanuts.
And again, my sambal is now a cracker.
Oh, oh the anchovies are extremely dry and chewy.
I don't think this is really a dish that you can microwave.
Yeah, the peanuts aren't really crunchy anymore.
It kind of tastes like soggy peanuts.
You know it's a bad situation when the chicken is probably the best thing in this dish.
Egg omelet is super dry.
It's got no flavor.
Wow, this is definitely the worst of the three dishes I've had so far.
I want to see what the sambal tastes like.
If I negate that burn-ness, which is pretty much 90% of all that, the sambal is good.
Spicy, tons of umami.
This is borderline not edible.
Unless you have a really good dental plan.
It's too bad.
I was really, really excited for this too.
Best thing in this bowl is 100% the cabbage.
Beef here is so dry.
Really, really dry.
Flavor is good.
Little sweet and very peppery.
But then I was digging deeper and I finally got like a juicy slice of beef.
And if this whole meal was like that juicy slice of beef, it doesn't be a delicious box of food.
I like the pepper sauce a lot.
The rice is good, good texture.
Of course, I already mentioned how good the cabbage is.
But then I'll get a piece and it's almost not chewable.
I think flavor-wise, I think this is my favorite.
The flavor is so good.
It's the same sort of broken rice that was used as the first dish.
So the texture is fantastic.
But only about 30% of the beef is chewable.
Other ones, I'm basically just swallowing it whole.
This is also by Chef Satish Arora.
And this is prawn chettinad.
So it utilizes a variety of spices.
Usually the spices are roasted and then ground.
You definitely smell the spices in this one.
This is really good.
If you're in this convention center and it's lunchtime,
you don't have time to go to a hawker center or a food court, get this dish.
This doesn't taste like run-of-the-mill mixture of masala.
Tastes way more tomatoey than this tomato rice did.
This definitely tastes like something that came from a chef.
It's wonderful.
It really is.
The prawn is very dry though.
I don't know if that's because this dish utilizes a lot of sun-dried meat
or it's just the fact that this prawn is dry.
I like it better without the prawn.
This is so good.
Like I said, it's got a tomatoey, vinegary flavor that really sets this apart.
Last dish, green curry prawn.
As soon as I open this up, that coconutty aroma pelts me across the face
and right away, mouthwatering.
Wow, I like this a lot, a lot, a lot.
It's so spicy and coconutty and aromatic and creamy.
Curry is fantastic.
It's just hitting me in all the right places, all my senses.
It's just bombarded by that wonderful curry's aroma and flavor in the eggplant.
Very nice.
Eggplant is delicious and the plump is juicy and tender.
This is an awesome dish.
For $7 Singapore dollars, you get a lot of prawn in this.
This is a good amount of food for about $4.50 US and this is delicious.
Just like the last dish, definitely taste a lot of effort went into it.
Curry, like I said, creamy, coconutty, very spicy.
I mean, it's a delicious green curry.
Green curry with prawns.
This is the dish to get.
The eggplant is good.
The prawn is good.
The rice is good.
The curry is really good.
All right, I'm gonna finish up and take you guys for some dessert.
I'm still in Suntec because Suntec has all the best dessert vending machines here in Singapore.
First of all, a popcorn vending machine.
All sorts of flavors of popcorn.
Look at this.
Butter caramel, lobster cheese, spicy cuttlefish, tomato, butterscotch, caramel, barbecue, salted egg,
cheese, sour cream, there's seaweed, cocoa malt.
Lobster cheese, cereal and butter caramel and a salted egg popcorn.
So besides the popcorn, there's also one cheese vending machine.
It's a cotton candy vending machine.
If you're feeling lucky, you can try to catch Ben & Jerry's.
Let's do all that.
It's so easy and convenient to get your vitamin C fix here in Singapore every single day.
These orange juice vending machines are everywhere.
Only $2 for freshly squeezed orange juice from premium oranges from Australia.
I think that's good.
It tastes good.
This is one of my all-time favorite vending machines.
This vending machine makes beautiful cotton candy.
I can get a heart, get a flower.
This is so cool.
Robot's hijacking my cotton candy.
I mean, I can see it.
I can see my cotton candy, but this door is not opening.
Well, that's the cotton candy vending machine.
Usually, you get your cotton candy.
I guess not today.
Let's try the Ben & Jerry.
I hope I have better luck with the Ben & Jerry vending machine.
So this one, you can do two tries for $2.
Seven tries for $5.
One last thing to get.
Cake in a can vending machine.
This stuff is shipped right from Japan.
Fuwa can, custard pudding, shortcake matcha.
Copy strawberry and cheesecake Ben & Jerry's ice cream.
It took me about five Singapore dollars to do this.
At least I got something.
It tastes better after you work for it.
Cake in a can from Japan.
Gonna let it sit for about half an hour to an hour.
Let it kind of thaw out.
So while that is happening, try the different popcorn I got.
Salted egg.
It's like some basil in there as well.
Whoa, I thought this was gonna be like a salted egg popcorn.
Salted egg caramel corn.
This is so good.
Wow.
Before I leave Singapore, buy another suitcase and fill it up with this.
So good, it's giving me goosebumps.
This thing is sweet and savory.
You definitely taste the salted eggs, but also that caramelized sugar.
I mean salty and sweet, always a good combo when it comes to popcorn.
But sweet and salted egg, this is on a whole new level of deliciousness.
Try another savory one.
It's the lobster and cheese.
I'm so excited.
There's not a lot of popcorn in here.
I feel like if this came in a bag, it would have been a lot more.
Whoa.
This is officially the craziest popcorn I've ever put in my mouth.
So light and airy.
The subtle sweet crunch on the outside is mesmerizing.
Like, it's mesmerizing my taste buds.
If I don't have dinner coming up in about an hour, I will not be able to put this down.
Oh my god.
Lobster flavor is just incredible.
I'm just amazed how much lobster flavor they put into that.
Cereal and butter caramel.
There's cereal on the outside of this popcorn.
I am shook.
This is the best popcorn on the face of this planet.
This is so much better than any other popcorn or caramel corn or cut up corn or whatever.
Or any different ways a corn can be popped.
This is the best one.
It's too good.
You guys need to try this.
Well, or don't.
It's way too addictive.
Oh my gosh.
Drop one in my Ben and Jerry's.
Oh, dangerous combination.
All right, I think my cake in a can hasn't melted enough.
And inside there's cake, there's cream, and these little round, what kind of looks like logos.
These are jellies.
So you spoonful, I'm able to get some cream from that mango sauce.
I mean, this cake is good.
You can tell all the ingredients are quality.
I don't know if it's worth $10 though.
It is fun for the experience.
I think I just rather have another can of this.
Okay, I'm going to snack some more.
And then for dinner, we're going to go to a place where this is a really interesting restaurant.
It's a restaurant that only charges you the cost of the food ingredients.
I don't really understand it.
We'll go check it out together.
Dinner is at this restaurant called True Cost.
They usually have a cover charge of $5 per person to get in.
They don't have it between the hours of 3 to 5.
Right now, it's 4.40.
So snuck in, no cover charge.
And apparently, they only charge you the actual cost of the food, of the ingredients.
Which sounds pretty incredible.
And I don't know how they even are able to pull that off.
Prices are pretty good.
So scallops for $10.
King crab leg for $46.
Pastas go for about $12 to $15 Singapore dollars.
So under $10 for a bowl of pasta.
Wagyu tenderloin for $40 Singapore dollars.
So about $30 for wagyu tenderloin.
This is the stuff they already sold out.
This is pretty much half the menu.
And all the must-try items are gone.
It's only 4 p.m.
So they don't really have a lot of food options left.
I got the chili pasta, some Hokkaido scallops.
This is about $10, $10 Singapore dollars.
And then I got a wagyu steak for about $20 US dollars.
Price is definitely very, very good here.
First item is here.
This is Hokkaido scallops.
Looks like some chili on here.
The scallops are really good.
And sweet and tender and everything good about scallops.
There's some cucumbers on here, chili.
I think olive oil.
A wagyu steak for about $20 US dollars.
I mean, it's not A5 wagyu or anything.
But this is definitely a lot of marbling and fat in here.
Wow, that was so tender and juicy.
I think that's a great price for the steak.
Also got a crab pasta.
Little bits of crab meat inside this pasta.
A little parmesan cheese, a little parsley.
I love this restaurant.
High quality food ingredients and flavor.
Plus, it's such a nice surrounding.
You would easily expect crab meat pasta to cost $20, $25 US dollars maybe.
This thing right now, the price for this crab pasta is $12.75 Singapore.
Real crab meat.
The flavor tastes like it came from a luxury restaurant.
Pasta's al dente.
The flavor is fantastic.
There's tons of crab meat on this.
That's not imitation crab.
That's real crab meat.
Wow, this restaurant's amazing.
I'd come back here.
Especially if you can come here between 3 to 5 and not pay the entrance fee.
And that's even more value.
What an awesome place this is.
So pretty fun day today.
Got to have a fun vending machine lunch with a bunch of vending machine desserts.
And then end the day with a high quality, super worth it for the price meal.
Just another typical food day here in Singapore.
As always, all places I went to listed down below for you guys.
Thank you all so much for watching.
Until we eat again, see you later.
