After flying right across Russia in our last vlog we finally arrived in Siberia.
In today's video we're going to show you a local market,
cooking with my babushka and whipping up vodka-based delights.
Good morning! Today we're going to share with you
what we usually do when we come over to visit my gran in Siberia.
So the date's the 17th of December 2020. Obviously we're getting closer to the
22nd which is the shortest day of the year.
The time now is 8.30. We woke up about an hour ago
and it looks like this outside. It will get light about 10 o'clock.
We've just had a shower and the first thing we've got to do is wait for the
guy to come and sort the internet out. We had it done yesterday and then we
went for a walk in the afternoon, came back and it wasn't working.
So we phoned up and the guy's coming back today. Literally every time we've
been in Russia we've had internet when we've been staying with Julia's gran.
Skim. Literally every time we've been in Russia we've had internet when we
we've never ever had a problem. This time we need internet obviously for work
and it breaks.
So the internet broke yesterday and I ran the company to sort it out
and they didn't know what went wrong and they're basically like shaking their
head. So we're waiting for someone to come
over here to sort it out and the person will be here
from 8 in the morning till 2 in the afternoon.
So we're just sitting and waiting for it to be sorted.
The internet is sorted. The guy just left.
We are ready to go out. We're just gonna head off to some local
market. We're gonna show you around when we're there and we're getting a taxi.
So the bus would have cost us 66 rubles
for the three of us and the taxi is 75 rubles.
So we're getting a taxi.
This is my gran by the way. We're going to have our lunch now and you can watch
how we made it yesterday. Now it's time to make vareniki with my
gran. Varenikis are basically just dumplings
with variety of different fillings. We're going to put potato filling in
our ones today and we're just gonna fry up some onion later on
and sprinkle some onion with it and a dollop of
good old sour cream. I feel a bit out of practice to be honest.
I don't remember last time I made them. No I know
last time I made them it was for my channel.
My gran made this pastry a couple of days ago and we already had some
mash cooked so we're just putting it together.
It's yours. Bon Appetit! And obviously we would finish our typical day in Siberia
by drinking vodka out of this bottle. That was a cheap joke wasn't it? You know
these things I bought earlier. We went around my auntie's yesterday
and she bought a similar ones with her friend
and they decided to experiment. I bought this one
which is nut brandy and it's got honestly half of these
ingredients. I don't even know what they look like
by reading their name in Russian. Let's see how they're going to
come out and we're going to put two liters. This jar is not two liters
it's a bit less but not much less. This is actually three
liters so and this is one liter so I'm going to
measure my vodka in this and pour it in these jars. Not true
jars. So we need to put this with vodka and leave it there for 10
days. Is this one 10 days? Yep. From time to time we need to shake
them up so and you could smell nice. I want to make them now so
we can have them for New Year's and I'm going to make my own bail as
well. We're going to do it together when we're getting ready for New Year's
because I don't think Bailey's has to wait for a few days.
This is the first time I do anything like this.
Oh that one smells actually really really nice.
Oh real nice. I don't know what it's called.
No what's the thing called? Clove. Clove. Clove smells really nice.
I need to stand up for this to have it to handle
by sitting down to pour it on the table. Maybe in the sink? I'm not worried about
where I'm gonna pour it. I'm scared that I'm gonna waste it and
my gran's not gonna be happy that I'm wasting her stuff.
Wasting the vodka. I'll make my gran sound like such an alcoholic.
Why am I doing this?
But with this one this is three liters and I can't really eyeball it.
Thank god my gran doesn't watch my videos.
Oh
Yeah I look like an expert when I do this.
I wanted to say that the air over here is so dry.
It's the second time now we really notice it and it's actually really
painful to breathe. You just feel like you want to sort of
squish your nose all the time. Hence why we're moisturizing our faces
to make them feel a bit nicer and my hands are awful as well.
That's why I was wearing blue gloves with cream underneath them not just
because I fancied so.
Matt, what do you have in mixed spices normally?
Cardamom. No. Cinnamon. No. The other one, star anise. No, I don't know.
Garlic. No, go on. This. Rabbit. Huh? Rabbit. No.
This. What this? What is this? I forgot the name.
No. God damn it. Did I spill some? Oh no.
