Pack Goat Hiking, Camping, Fishing & Firebox Stove Cooking With My Dogs Ash & Juni Part
My time in the wilderness is priceless to my peace of mind. Taking some time out for myself, time to think, time to reflect on what I'm getting right, and time to consider what I could be doing better. Time away from distraction. Time spent tending to the basics like staying warm, dry, feeding myself--all the while being aware of my surroundings, knowing full well that predators could be near. There's something about knowing that it's all up to you and what you have on your back to get by in nature--which can be so beautiful and calm but can also be completely ruthless. Mother nature doesn't care if you get hypothermia, slip and break your leg, or get eaten by a bear--hell, she won't even notice that you were there. The wilderness is a place of extremes, from the beauty, to the potential risks--it's all there in spades, so decisions need to be well considered. Time in this environment builds self confidence as well as self awareness.
On this trip I didn't have the best of luck trout fishing--caught a nice cutty, but had to release it because of that particular lakes restriction. I later caught another cutthroat that I could keep and eat for dinner--grilled, then enjoyed over a bed of sushi rice with garlic, lemon, pepper sauce. I also used the Coffey Spit to flame broil a beautiful Ribeye steak to perfection. For breakfast, I shocked everyone by eating healthy (healthy by my standards) with a kale and bacon frittata. Everything cooked on the original, and still by far the best, wood burning camp stove--the 5" G2 Firebox Campfire Stove.

It's really rich with all that bacon fat in there.
Help me sleep worm.
Just not catching fish.
There's another lake that's not too far from here.
Some cowboys working some cattle.
Ohhhh.
Must be going up the hill.
Every time the cows try to go up, the dogs push them back.
Okay, let's go.
I'm just going to hope I don't have any run-ins with cows or cowboys.
Alright, we've made it to the lake.
Let's see if any of this is fishable.
It is pretty awesome.
Good job, Hill.
Okay, I caught one. Finally.
Try, try, and try again, I guess.
I'll try to land him up on that rock.
It's a good sized fish.
Oh, looks pretty good.
Looks pan-sized.
Think it could work.
Yeah, he's not bad.
Definitely pan-sized.
Anyway, nice looking fish.
He'll certainly make a nice dinner.
Good boy.
Come on, Bill.
Nice.
I've got this really nice sushi rice that I'm going to cook.
And then I'm going to do a lemon butter garlic kind of a sauce.
To do over a grilled trout.
This is Nishiki sushi rice.
So I need one cup of water.
Spray that out and bring that to a boil.
I brought some charcoal with me because the pine that's up here just does not make good hot coals.
But throwing this charcoal in will bring the temperature down for now.
Now we want this temperature to go way down for 20 minutes.
Okay, that worked perfectly.
A big piece of charcoal brought the temperature way down.
Yet it gives that charcoal a chance to get going.
Looks like we just have a little bit of ribs to remove on this one.
Okay, I think that means our rice is close.
Okay, let's take that rice off.
And let it just sit by and stay warm.
Ooh, that's looking good.
Okay, I just turned these beauties over.
I'm just going to butter the skin side a little bit.
Let's just see if that butter will help crisp that skin just a little bit more.
Okay, now I'm going to move them down onto my rice.
And then I'm going to make my sauce.
Take the grill off.
I'm just going to put this on just to warm that rice up.
Just to make sure it doesn't get too far behind.
I'm going to bring up my temperature now.
Give them a second to get going.
Go ahead and move this down.
Put on my fry pan, my saute pan.
Go ahead and get that butter melting.
I'll just leave that right on there. It helps speed up the warming of that butter.
In fact, you know what? I'm just going to put this other butter in there too.
Okay, so just cook that down a little bit.
Make it a little more saucy.
It does look a little more saucy.
I didn't really brown the butter like I'd planned to.
But it was getting pretty hot and I was worried about my garlic.
I just really didn't want to burn my garlic.
But that looks really nice.
That's a really nice sauce.
Over the heat.
This will just warm it up a little bit.
