Hey guys, Mike Chen here on the island of Maui. My first time here, been here for about a day.
This is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to in my life. From the waters to the mountains,
it's just magical. And I got a room with a full kitchen and microwave so I can just bring home
groceries and ready-to-eat meals and just eat from there. And I wanted to just grab stuff from the local 7-Eleven,
but people told me about this place.
Foo Lam Farms. Apparently, according to everyone I talked to, this is the most magical grocery store. Let's go find out why.
Looks like a pretty typical grocery store. Cake looks amazing. There's chocolate cream pie.
There's sweet potato hapia. A lot of local Hawaiian treats. All right, this looks really interesting.
In the prepared food section,
there's a lot of good looking stuff. There's corn dogs, shrimp tempura, roast chicken, little mini plates, spam, wasabi.
Sure. In the hot food section, there's kalua pork. There looks like some kind of pork belly over there.
Pork lau lau. Garlic chicken.
Only available on Friday. Hawaiian plates. Is it Friday today? It's Friday today. Oh, look at this.
Egg sandwiches. I know I'm not at a 7-Eleven, but I see an egg sandwich. I want an egg sandwich. Tuna. All right, seafood section.
This is pretty cool. All sorts of different poke. I count at least a dozen
different types. I definitely came a little later than I should have. A lot of the stuff is taken away already.
There's still a good amount of poke left, and then some octopus salad looks good. That's it. Thank you so much. Check it out, though.
Giant bag of poi. So a lot of the seafood has been taken away already.
So I'm not really sure what's originally in those sections, but you can pretty much find a lot of ready-to-eat traditional Hawaiian dishes.
Whoa. You rarely see sandwiches this big anymore in grocery stores. Also some rolls.
Chai and platters of chow mein. Lijing pineapple. Discounted from $5.43 to $1.99. That's a good deal.
And a bag of fresh tortilla chips.
I think that's pretty good for dinner. Found a lot of delicious looking food at the grocery store.
Most of them ready to eat. Maybe some items a few minutes in the microwave. Before getting to that,
I just want to give a big thank you and shout out to Surfshark VPN for sponsoring this video.
I told you guys, Surfshark VPN is something I utilize every single day, especially when I'm traveling. Nowadays,
we all have so much private information out there, and there's so many people who are just trying to gain access to them.
Whether it's data aggregators trying to get it to sell to marketing firms or people with much more malicious intent,
you gotta do everything you can to keep your digital information safe.
So what a VPN is, it's a virtual private network. And what Surfshark VPN does is that it encrypts and secures your personal information
before it goes over the internet. So people who you don't want having access to your private info,
they're not gonna have access to it.
I actually know somebody who didn't use a VPN to hide their IP address, and someone was able to track their location in real time.
Really scary stuff. Surfshark also has something called Surfshark Alerts.
So when someone's trying to gain access to your email, you're gonna get notified right away. Also on the entertainment side,
for example,
if you want to check out what Netflix catalogs look like in other countries,
you can actually utilize Surfshark VPN to make sites like Netflix think you're in a different country,
so you gain access to that particular country's TV shows and movies. And vice versa,
if you're traveling outside the US, you're trying to gain access to your US streaming services that you pay for,
you won't be able to do that without a VPN. And also when you're traveling abroad,
a lot of times you can't even access and utilize US websites. Major US websites will not work when you're traveling abroad.
So I use Surfshark VPN to basically pay my bills.
So if you want to give it a try, go to my link down below. Use my promo code dumpling.
You'll get 83% off your order, plus three additional months for free, plus try it out for 30 days.
If you don't like it for any reason, get your money back. My first food plate is out of the microwave.
This is the Hawaiian plate that I got. So it's a mix of their already prepared
Hawaiian dishes. It does look a little dry now. I noticed that
if you probably want to get this as fresh as possible, you got to go during lunchtime,
I think at least. I went around four o'clock,
they were already packing up the poke and the hot food items. Looks like it's been sitting there a while,
although it still looks really good. So got the Kalua pork. This is Hawaiian
shredded pork, and this thing still looks so
juicy. There's little dry pieces there as well, but for the most part,
tender, juicy. I got some ube as well.
And then I got some lau lau, which is usually pork and butterfish wrapped in taro leaves.
So, oh, this one does look a little more dry. So here it's just pork,
but as soon as you break open that outer leafy layer, that aroma from the greens just pounds you. Also,
got some pineapples and white rice.
That pork is definitely a little dry in the lau lau, but man, that is delicious.
The flavor from the taro leaves, it's so
fragrant, and as soon as you take a bite, your mouth is just filled with that amazing aroma.
There's still some fatty pieces of the pork that did some melting. The lean pieces are a little tough and dry.
Oh, wow, that's a perfect bite right there. Everything was tender, everything was fatty, everything was melty. Oh my goodness.
I can't believe that came out of a grocery store. This tastes like it came from a local Hawaiian restaurant.
It's absolutely phenomenal. Even after everything has gone down the hatch, about 30 seconds, that fragrance from the leaf is still
permeating in my mouth. I'm not kidding. That's an amazing version of this dish.
If I got this fresh when it just came out of the cooker, it would have knocked my socks off. Kalua pork.
Whoa, I was expecting like a dry mess. Some pieces are a little dry, but this is awesome.
Wow, the pork is tender.
It's juicy. Obviously, especially if you're biting into the fattier parts. And what's most amazing about this is
the smoke from the pork. It's aggressive.
It gets in like every corner in your mouth. Feels like eating clouds of porky smoke.
This is as good, flavor-wise anyway, as I've ever had, I think. Of course, I'm not a local.
I have eaten these dishes a lot, but these are really good. Very pleasantly surprised. Ube,
starchy and sweet. I like the pineapples. I'm gonna eat that with my lao lao.
Savory, sweet, and tart, and juicy. That's a really good flavor combo. I think especially when I add it to my kalua pork.
They also gave me, I don't know what this is. It looks like salsa with little bits of fish inside. I think that's what this is.
Salmon salsa. This is amazing. This, in all its refreshingness, is gonna go so well with the fatty pork.
And it does. This is a delicious
combo plate. Again, they only have this every Friday.
But I think they have these dishes every single day.
So highly recommend going down there. If you want something really affordable or a lot of food, go there and get these porks.
Also the salsa. Next up, got my fresh tortilla chips and pineapple salsa.
First of all, this is really good salsa. It's spicy. It's citrusy. And then add that sweet tartness of the pineapple.
Random food fact. Did you guys know pineapples are actually clusters of berries?
One pineapple takes about two years to grow. I just went on a pineapple tour today.
So that's why I knew all that. I got three different types of poke. They had over a dozen different flavors.
But like I said, they seem to be closing down around four o'clock.
So if you want to get this, definitely go early. So I got a wasabi ahi, spicy ahi, and octopus salad.
That's a really good octopus salad. Octopus is tender. This whole thing is refreshingly delicious. I highly recommend this. Ahi with wasabi.
That is all sorts of yums. Super tender, fresh fish.
Absolutely melts in your mouth. With that nice hit of wasabi, this might be one of my favorite poke bowls ever.
Haven't had a lot of poke bowls in my life.
That's my favorite one. This is the spicy ahi.
I mean the fish itself, no question. So fresh and delicious.
It's much more creamy. Nice flavor from the seaweed, but it doesn't hold a candle to the wasabi ahi.
This is just magical. I think my tortilla chip, some pineapple salsa, some octopus salad, and wasabi ahi.
That's so good. And it feels so light in my stomach. I can't believe I got this from the grocery store. Absolutely delicious.
This is a salmon chazuke dip.
Really creamy. The flavor is so unique. I taste the seaweed. Definitely taste the salmon.
Yeah, there is seaweed in here. And green tea is what I'm tasting. I'm like, I'm tasting some kind of like
aromatic ingredient. I can't pinpoint it. They put green tea in here and that makes such a difference.
Egg sandwich.
That's okay. I make a mistake of every time I see an egg sandwich.
I always get it thinking that it might taste close to what I get from 7-Eleven in Japan.
Never really does. Probably better if I did it. Dip it into the salmon dip.
And it's better. I've been seeing this all around Hawaii, especially when I was trying to buy
sliced pineapples. It's pineapples sprinkled with lihing powder. And lihing is some sort of a salted plum powder
that's usually sprinkled on top of fruits.
It definitely brings a savory element to the pineapple. I can definitely taste the salted plum flavor from the powder.
I think I prefer my pineapple as is. Best thing out of the meal today.
Definitely the Hawaiian plate of hot food.
I got at the hot food counter. And the wasabi poke and the octopus salad. Those are my favorite things.
So if you're in Maui, you don't really feel like going to a restaurant when the restaurant is overbooked.
The restaurants here are really really crowded. So if you just want to get some food, bring it home. This supermarket is a fantastic option.
Especially for those items that I just mentioned. All right, I'm gonna finish dinner and go look for some more food tomorrow.
After a day of snorkeling, I'm gonna grab some food at the local 7-Eleven. There's only one of these on the island.
This is a really nice one. Oh, look at this. Big cheese bob.
Different flavor shrimp crackers. 7-Eleven in Hawaii has some amazing food.
From what I remember.
There's baked hot dogs,
spicy ahi,
pork adobo,
spicy ahi dynamite sushi roll, 7-Eleven local style sainen,
deluxe spam musubi, kalua pork and cabbage bento, breakfast sprint gramble with arabiki sausage,
broken glass,
terry chicken and egg sandwich, rochiko chicken. This is an inside out dynamite sushi pack. This is so exciting.
Hawaii doesn't even really feel like feel like part of the U.S. Especially not when you come to a 7-Eleven.
There's a smoothie machine. Whoa, these are a couple of really interesting flavors. One is butter mochi. One is hapia.
Oh, too bad it's out of order. There's a hot food section and here look at this giant thousand dim sum items.
First thing, let's try the kalua pork and cabbage bento.
Oh this right away you can tell it's gonna be good.
Only bad thing is I already know there's not enough pork. I wish there was more pork on this. Before this even goes into my mouth,
I smell that sweet
smoky flavor of the pork and it looks
divine. All glistening and juicy.
I love this so much. The pork is tender, it's juicy, it's fatty. The smokiness of it, you can almost cut with a knife.
And all that fat steeps into the rice as well.
Then you get a nice crunch of the cabbage. It kind of balances out the fattiness of this dish.
Once you start eating it, you don't want to stop.
Amazing. One of my favorite items here are the Hawaii 7-Eleven. Next up, 7-Eleven spicy ahi dynamite sushi roll.
I think this is how it goes.
This is such a hefty sushi roll by the way.
This thing, crunchy nori on the outside, vinegary sushi rice, spicy tuna inside with a refreshing
crunchy cucumber. It's spicy, it's crunchy, it's creamy, it's refreshing.
For $2.80, this will definitely put a huge dent in your hunger. Similarly, I have a 7-Eleven inside out dynamite
sushi pack. Dynamite is right. This definitely looks like something exploded in here.
So this thing is a seafood salad on top with some kind of
I guess dynamite sauce with sushi rice on the bottom. So it's basically a seafood salad sitting on top of a California roll.
It's not bad. The rice is a little hard. The seafood salad is good. It's got a little crunchy pop and caviar.
I think there's some carrots in here as well.
But this kind of tastes like a California roll with a seafood salad on top with a ton of mayo.
I mean it is very spicy, but the rice is like the weakest element to this thing. Whereas
this sushi rice,
this is really good. You taste that nice fragrance of the rice. Here
the rice is kind of like a cold clump of sand that sunk to the bottom of the ocean. The first time I've ever had
saimin was actually here in Hawaii. And this is a 7-Eleven local style saimin.
And it's really cool to see that 7-Eleven is doing their own putting their own brands on local foods.
Saimin is basically Hawaiian ramen noodles. And here I see some chashu, some eggs, and eggs are also added into the noodles themselves.
Which creates a much more chewy bouncy texture.
This is really really good. The broth is mild, but very hearty. Noodles,
like I said, nice and chewy and bouncy. The soup base has so much depth and such a nice umami aftertaste.
Chashu pork is nice and tender.
This is awesome, especially that broth. It tastes like a really good for you type of broth.
I mean you take one sip of this, right away your tummy feels warm,
it feels comforted. 7-Eleven knocked it out of the park with this one. And for dessert, local coconut mochi.
Soft and chewy, not as soft as traditional Japanese mochi with a very mild
coconutty flavor. Oh, there's shaped coconuts on top as well.
So just spending a couple days here in Maui, leaving tomorrow for Oahu.
So gonna go out and hike a little bit. So we'll finish the food when we come back. Good morning.
I'm gonna finish off the rest of the 7-Eleven food. When I have good 7-Eleven food in the fridge,
I'm pretty excited to wake up. So this is what what they call here in Hawaii. This is what they call
a pork hash. It's pretty much a pork dim sum and they have different flavors of this. In this particular one,
it's a jalapeno pork hash.
Oh, I love this so much, so much, so much. It's basically just a stuffed shumai with thyme,
some heat.
See all the jalapenos in here?
This thing is peppery and spicy. It's extremely porky and so flavorful.
I think this island, anything to do with pork, they just knock it out of the park.
Grand slam every single time.
First bite of food in the morning when it's really good, your whole body feels it. That was excellent.
Doesn't look like much, but one of the best dim sum items I've ever had. They sell them by pieces.
I only got a couple now. I wish I got at least a dozen. So this is a Spam Musubi Deluxe.
So Spam, seaweed, of course, on top of rice, some sesame, and an egg inside.
Wherever you see this being sold on the island, it's probably not going to be bad.
This thing, giant slice of ham, tender eggs. The seaweed is not as
crunchy anymore because I microwaved this a little, but still brings that beautiful seaweedy flavor. And the furikake seasoning just brings it home.
This is the most perfect grab-and-go food on the island.
So whenever I go to 7-Eleven, I look for the 7-Eleven branded items. And this is really interesting. It's Kraft
7-Eleven Hawaii brand. And I really never seen something like this before in a 7-Eleven. And this is Teriyaki Chicken Egg Salad.
So Teriyaki Chicken and Egg Salad Sandwich. And this thing's stuffed with Teriyaki Chicken Egg Salad on top,
with a slice of lettuce in here as well. Bread in this sandwich is much firmer than the brand you'll find in sandwiches in Asia.
This compared to the Egg Salad Sandwich I had from Foodland's, it's not in there.
First of all, Egg Salad is so creamy and light. The flavor very much reminiscent of what you will find in Japan.
The Teriyaki Chicken is sweet and smoky, so soft and with such a rich, deep flavor.
And every single bite, the umami tsunami just cascades across your tongue.
This is really, really good.
Only thing I don't like about this, if you're used to this really soft, fluffy, cloud-like bread from the 7-Elevens in Asia,
this does not have that. The bread is heavier. It's denser. But maybe some people prefer that. I don't know. Other than that,
this is an excellent sandwich.
So this is a Breakfast Scramble with Arabiki Sausage from 7-Eleven Hawaii. Couple different types of sausage,
potatoes and cheese on top. Definitely need to microwave this. 75 seconds.
So they do tell you exactly how long to cook these dishes for. This one looks really exciting.
So this has slices of ham. There's potatoes, regular breakfast sausage.
The Arabiki Sausage is the Japanese type of sausage made with pork. Super fluffy, soft eggs.
Cheese covers the entire top portion of this dish and underneath there's scallions and rice.
This is very much a fusion of traditional western breakfast and rice. Like everything on top
tastes like a mixture of what you'll find at a pretty much any western hotel buffet.
But the addition of Arabiki Sausage is tremendous. This sausage brings so much more flavor to this dish.
It's very snappy. Much more aromatic than the traditional breakfast sausage.
The eggs are really fluffy. The cheese is a nice touch. And all that over rice.
I really wish I had some dipping sauce to put in here. Some sriracha or hawaii or something. You need
something spicy to kind of balance this dish out. Because right now it's very fatty. It's very very rich.
This is definitely a really hearty, very fulfilling breakfast.
I mean if you're about to go snorkeling for the day or going surfing for the day or going for a hike
you don't want to feel hungry. I definitely recommend this. So these are hot chili and lime shrimp crackers.
I like everything about this except for the price. I didn't realize this bag was was eight dollars.
Which is very hefty for a bag of shrimp crackers. With that said, if you love shrimp crackers
you'll love this.
Every cracker is spicy. It's citrusy and just pure addiction.
What I should have done is use this instead of tortillas to eat my poke with. This will be an awesome little vessel
to scoop up your poke. Eight dollars though.
Not really expensive. I saw this when I was checking out at the 7-eleven. I had to get some.
This is a ube crinkle cookie. Hawaii's favorite ube cookie.
I can see why this is a delicious cookie. I know it's just personal preference.
I hate hard crunchy cookies. It's soft. It's chewy. Just a burst of ube flavor in every single bite.
An ice cream sandwich made out of these cookies. That's how it should be done. One last thing I saw at the 7-eleven.
This is called a broken glass. It's like a jello cup with all sorts of jellies in here.
And it tastes just like that. It's like a giant jelly hangout.
I mean, it's a milky jello cup. The flavors are very tropical-y. Not bad.
Anyway, heading to the airport soon.
But whenever I'm in Hawaii, it really does feel like a whole different country.
I love going into the local 7-eleven to see if there's anything I haven't tried yet.
And this time being able to go to a Hawaiian grocery store and having pretty much the best poke
I've ever had in my life. And one of the best kalua porks. Seriously, that might be my biggest recommendation
for those of you traveling to Hawaii. Besides the restaurants, if you just want to stay in, bring food into your hotel room or your
Airbnb, go to Foodland, get the poke, and get the Hawaiian plate. 7-eleven,
you gotta try the pork mash. That thing is just off the hook. Like the jalapeno one.
I don't know about the other flavors. The jalapeno one, I can definitely vouch for. Actually, everything was good.
The Hawaiian ramen is delicious. The egg and teriyaki chicken sandwich is delicious. The breakfast platter is good. The musubi, the sushi.
It's so weird coming to Hawaii,
which is part of the U.S., and being able to go to the 7-eleven and having the food actually taste delicious.
I wouldn't mind eating every single meal there. And that wraps up another 7-eleven and grocery store review here in Hawaii.
And as always, thank you all so much for watching. Until we eat again, see you later.
