My brother JR and his long-time girlfriend Natalie decided earlier this year that they wanted to explore Colorado nature for extended amounts of time. After exploring many options, they decided that outfitting their Jeep Rubicon with a rooftop tent was the best way to go.
In this video they give us a low-down of their setup that allows them to easily explore all of the beautiful terrain Colorado has to offer.
Thanks for sharing JR and Natalie!

Hey, I'm J.R. Stevens, brother, and today we're going to put together our tiny house on wheels,
also known as the, oh gosh, who makes this tent, Natalie? The, isn't it Outback?
Smittybilt. Smittybilt, baby. The tent itself is built on a safari rack that is bolted into both
the bumper and the front part of the jeep. So you can see how it's bolted and secured in.
And then we have foot pegs and side steps so we can climb on top of the jeep. And then right here
we have a little like walkway so that you can go from here to here to here and get up. And then
you have room to walk. So I'll show you how you can get up on here. So you just have a handle here
that you pull. Step and you step. Then you're on top of the jeep. Then there's a flat platform
up here that you can stand up on. And then this is a really, really durable cover that's water
and dirt and sandproof. And it has a Velcro strap right here. It's about that big so that when you
Velcro it down it keeps everything out and keeps your tent nice and dry. And so all you do is just
pull on the Velcro on this side right here because then it loosens up the tension on it.
And then you can just kind of go around the tent.
Loosen up that Velcro and it kind of just peels away like uh
then you can pull the cover off. And I usually just set that like on top of the jeep
out of the way. And so now um you can go around and undo all the straps.
Okay so now you just go around the tent and you undo the strap. There's a couple in the back.
Okay so I've undone all the straps around here. Then I'll undo the one for the there's a ladder
up here that you'll see in a second. Okay so all of the straps are undone. So now what you can do
is pull the ladder out. It has a locking mechanism so you lock that in place.
And see how this kind of pulls like that. What you do from here is you get down off the jeep
and you can just grab your ladder and pop your tent open. And that's all there is to um
to pulling the tent open. And then uh I can show you in a second the rest of the setup.
But you basically just go around and you put little metal poles in to open everything up.
I'll show you that in just a second. So the poles that hold everything up uh you carry them in a
canvas bag. And I'm just going to show you what one of them look like. Then we're going to do a
time lapse so you don't have to watch every single pole going one by one. But it's just a heavy gauge
metal that almost looks like like like heavy duty uh clothes hanger material. And uh basically what
you do is you put it has a little opening and then you'll put it here and it will hold open
this piece and this piece um so that you can get ventilation. It also helps to keep
uh rain out. So uh here's how here's how that goes.
Okay so now you have all the metal poles up and there's a little brace that goes across here that
you just slide in. And really it's that that easy. That's all there is to setting it up.
We'll get Natalie to show you the inside of the tent. Hey guys I'm Natalie um and we are going
to check out the inside of the tent here. Uh so you've got this little rainfly at a door here
and you just roll her up while you're kind of gonna get inside and check it out.
And get yourself set up for inside your tent with all your goodies. Your
sleeping bag and pillow you know the good stuff. All right let's check it out guys.
All right so as you can see inside you've got this really nice pad. So you've got these straps
for safety. This is so you can grab this whenever pulling yourself in the tent or out of the tent.
Hey there. You got these nice side windows. Easy to get in and out
um inside the tent here. So Jer can get on the inside or on the front. There's a mattress.
Yes nice foam mattress. It's probably about an inch and a half and then we put some memory foam
underneath it that we got from Walmart and it probably cost us about 20 bucks to do that.
It added a lot of extra uh padding and then we also have another one that we lay on top here so
it's really comfortable. And then you got one, two, three, four windows total. And then there's
a sunroof here so you can uh open this up and at nighttime you can see the stars so you get really
good ventilation. Uh we've been out in like what 40 degree weather and it was really warm in here
um to the point where we had to open up windows. Uh there's storage pouches up here
and then down here and uh what else can we tell them about it Natalie? It's an amazing little
tree house. Yeah. Let's decorate it and then we'll show you what it looks like with the
final decor of our sleeping bags and all of our goodies. Sounds good.
