That time we drove a rickshaw along the Karakoram Highway in Northern Pakistan. Broken roads, rockslides, lost puppy, great food and almost crashing in a tunnel. This day had it all! Learn to travel continuously → https://www.travelcontinuously.com/

Travel has changed my life and I have no plans on stopping any time soon. That's why I am now running this video blog showing you how I travel the world continuously.
if you made it this far then let me know in the comments below!
Wow, check it out. That used to be the road. At least I'm glad we went on it.
Good morning.
Thank you.
Good morning. Welcome back to Pakistan. We are in Chilas right now.
I have our rickshaw here and today we're driving up to Gilgit.
I did say before in a previous video that we were finishing in Gilgit, but we're not.
This is kind of a stop off on the way north and then we're going to come back down to Gilgit after.
But you're going to see that. Right now we need to grab some fuel and head off.
And we're off. Claire's starting today. See you. Bye bye. Let's go.
Nice.
Not repeating that mistake.
And now we're off.
We've already learned our lesson once. We ran out of fuel a couple of days ago.
So we're keeping it back up this time.
We've got another 140km to do today.
We just jumped out because now we're entering the Silk Route, Karakoram Highway,
which is the old Silk Road, the massive trade route that spanned half the world.
And now we're on it, which is very, very cool.
I've always actually wanted to drive the Karakoram Highway,
and I didn't even realize we were doing it this trip, to be honest.
That's how good my planning is, but I'm very excited that we are.
Karakoram Highway
Okay, this is dodgy.
Okay, my turn.
I just pulled over for this, because we are now 462km from Islamabad.
Well, I mean, that's probably about half the driving we're doing,
so we're going past Gilgit.
But still, that's pretty cool to have driven that across Pakistan in the last few days.
Feels good.
Koh Himalaya, two peaks is Mount Everest from Nepal,
and the killer mountain is two peaks, Koh Himalaya, Manga Parbat.
Koh Himalaya is a length of around 2400km.
Right, we just pulled over at the Three Junction,
which is the meeting point of three of the world's highest mountain ranges,
the Himalayan, the Karakoram, and the Hindu Kush.
So we actually just saw the sign.
We've got a rickshaw down there, but we had to pull over to see this.
Check it out.
Best friend.
Now we're about to go through a tunnel.
First tunnel in the whole time.
Let's see if we actually have working lights.
Very dark in here.
You might be able to see me.
A little bit sketchier than the main road.
But we're almost there.
Going across this.
Yeah, go for it, yeah.
Cool. Good call.
We did this!
Yeah, nice.
Hello!
And we are here.
Gilgit Baltistan.
Arriving to Park Hotel, I believe.
And pretty easy day, to be fair.
We set out at like 9am, did 130km,
and it's only like 1.30am right now.
So we're going to go find some lunch.
And first stop, we're going to get some Mamtus,
which are inside here.
Oh yeah, nice.
How is it?
Chicken, beef, yeah.
Beef, beef.
Okay, good.
Cool.
Yeah, please.
Can we get, I don't know, 10?
Yeah, perfect.
Okay, great, thank you.
Alright, so we've got the Mamtu here,
which, any of you that have been to Nepal,
it looks just like Malone.
Except for this is beef and garlic,
and chilli and ginger, apparently, inside.
So, I didn't find that over here,
I looked it up, but we've also got
some soy and chilli to go with it.
I love it.
Let's spit out my spoon.
Really good.
These are like the momos I remember from Nepal,
which I lived off when I was there.
They're called Mamtu here.
Really nice.
But this chilli is spicy.
I could live off these for the next two weeks.
They're so good.
Honestly, it was so good.
It comes up as Raja Mamtu,
if you ever want to look it up,
and you're ever in Gilgit, do it,
because they were amazing.
And actually, as well, I just went to pay,
and he wouldn't let us.
I tried to, I tried to pay twice,
he was like, please, I want to pay.
And he was like, no, no, you're my guest,
I won't let you.
Trying to squeeze through.
But he was like, no, I won't let you,
you're my guest, this is my hospital,
thank you for coming.
And so we didn't pay.
But if you ever do come to Gilgit-Baltistan,
go there.
See you later, guys.
It's the next morning,
and we are about to head off again.
We're in, where are we?
Gilgit, right now.
We made it here last night,
and now we're about to set off up to Sost.
We've got 190 kilometers of driving today,
going pretty far north,
and apparently the scenery is going to be
pretty spectacular.
So, without further ado,
we're going to jump in and get going.
Just as soon as we can get out of here.
So, yeah, we need to whip around
and then out that way.
Jordan!
All right, Mark and Jordan are off,
and we got blocked by the banner.
All right, we just pulled over
because this little guy was crossing the road,
and he's all on his own.
So now we're not really sure what to do.
I know we can't take him with us.
You know, I won't be able to leave Pakistan with him.
Could you leave him on the side of the road?
Take him to the next town?
Not really sure.
Okay, there's a bit of a, like, community
with tents and stuff over here.
So maybe we'll go and see if they will look after him.
Okay, we're just looking now,
and there are no dogs here.
No one seems to have a dog.
So, yeah, we're going to get back to town
and drop it in a garden or to someone
because I'm not leaving it here if there's no dogs
because they might not like dogs.
They might just check it out again.
But let's try.
All right, we're back in town now,
so we're going to try somewhere,
see if anyone will take him.
Anyone else?
Yes.
We found him on the side of the road.
We found him here.
Anywhere we can leave him.
Do you know what to do?
Ah, okay.
Okay.
Oh, we found another little puppy.
Okay, they seem to be staying here.
I mean, that's as good as any.
Yeah.
Okay, thank you.
Well, at least they're looking after him here.
Well, we found, I think, his brother,
and I think they've been dumped,
so we're just leaving them here.
And he said, like,
hopefully someone else will come and take them
if they're at the restaurant
and they get seen by people.
See his brother.
Oh, no, don't do that.
Don't do that.
We found your brother, mate.
Yeah.
I know it's very normal here.
Lots of people will just leave them
on the side of the road,
and then they're going to be
most likely community dogs anyway
that live off scraps and on the street,
so, like, we do have to get used to it,
but we couldn't just, like,
drive past a little puppy,
so at least we found somewhere
he can be a little bit off the road
and maybe someone will pick him up.
Well done.
All right, let's go.
It is a little bit unnerving
that these rocks can fall at any time,
and you can see a lot of rock slides,
but we keep going.
We've got to go fast enough to touch the rocks.
Ah, yeah.
OK, so we've just arrived at Hunza.
Perfect.
See you. Thank you.
OK, that was a bit sketchy.
We just had to slow down
because a bunch of other cars
did in front of us,
and the reason they did
is because there were rocks
coming down the side of the hill,
and it was only a few,
but it could have been
a bigger rock slide,
and then we just had to edge past.
We did actually hear
a couple of smaller rocks
hit the side of the rickshaw,
but we made it past.
Yeah, we made it.
That's the main thing.
Wow, check it out.
That used to be the road.
I think there was a bridge here.
We need to get across that side.
Yeah, so according to Google Maps,
that's the bridge.
We need to go down and around.
Hello.
Well, at least I'm glad we went on it.
A makeshift bridge,
and we're away again.
All right, we just pulled in for lunch
to this place.
It's a...
How do you say it?
Rowayat?
Rowayat.
We're getting some barbecue chicken.
Oh, wow.
We actually also got proper coffee,
which is the first time so far, I think.
I'm sure there is proper coffee around,
but we haven't found it anywhere.
It's mostly just been chai tea
and instant coffee,
but we just found proper coffee here.
That's hilarious.
Amazing.
Look at that.
This one is?
That's the tikka?
That's the tikka.
Chakara boti.
Nice.
Look at that.
Right, sir.
Thank you.
Ah, yeah.
Let's dive in.
I think some of these are boneless.
It's all going to be quite hot,
but I'm trying it on its own first.
Apparently this is spicy.
It's really good.
I really like barbecue,
because obviously we just watch them do it,
but it's not too hot either,
but it's a warmth.
It's going to build for sure.
It's like chicken tikka,
but a bit different.
I like Pepsi more.
I saw something yesterday,
which just like blew my mind.
You know, everyone always does straws like that,
and you can't get to the bottom very easily.
So it's like, what if you do it like that?
And we just got bought an extra chicken tikka.
Oh, so much.
Nice light lunch.
Okay, we are off.
Our food was really, really good.
We just pulled up next to the air rickshaw
for this little photo op,
and honestly, it was so nice.
We had like, if you're ever in Hunza,
go check them out.
We had loads of barbecue,
chicken, chicory boti, chicken tikka.
Great.
And now we're about to head off again.
Okay, next leg.
Chinata.
Holy ----.
This is the sketchiest I've felt the whole time.
It was pitch black in the middle of the tunnel.
Just using our phone light
to let people know that we're here.
This tunnel never ends.
We have no lights.
All right, better late than never.
We found our lights.
Oh dear.
Well, we made it through the tunnel,
and this is our reward.
It is windy.
I was just driving towards the Karakara Mountain,
which is the end of the highway
that I've always seen,
that I thought was amazing,
but I had to bring the drone down
because we were literally going sideways.
It's going to be very cool this last bit,
I think, to drive straight towards these giant peaks.
All right, we had to pull over here
because look at that.
Hello.
All right, the wind was way too strong,
and I couldn't get it back to where we were,
so I've just landed my drone somewhere up here.
I'm now going to do the find my drone thing
and hopefully get it back somewhere up here.
I've never had to do this before.
I know I saw it land at least,
so it is around here somewhere.
I managed to bring it down on some rocks.
I'm not sure of the condition,
but at least I'm going to get the memory card back.
Okay, I found it.
Yes, there she is.
Wow, not bad.
The problem was I couldn't beat the wind back to the tuk-tuk,
so it just wasn't moving anywhere
and just ran out of battery here.
Claire raced up the hill driving it,
and I managed to land it on the hillside.
I just got it back.
Very cool.
Again, look at this.
Now, back in the rickshaw.
Yes, all yak meat.
What a day.
What an end to the day.
Seriously, I've never been somewhere like this.
One of the most beautiful mountain ranges,
one of the most beautiful places I've seen.
It's just incredible even where we're staying now.
There's a giant mountain behind me,
giant mountains over there, all the way around.
I'm going to leave you here.
Thanks again for watching,
and see you on the next video.
