American Junior Golf Association Tournament in Chicopee

Dozens of youth golfers from all over the world descended on Chicopee Country Club today, playing for a few spots in a tournament that will continue later this week. 20th News reporter Duncan McLean is live in Springfield with what's at stake for the players and what this big event means to the club and the community, Duncan. All around the world is right. Some 78 youth golfers descending on Chicopee Country Club today to participate in the qualifying round for this week's American Junior Golf Association event. Some hailing from as far as Shanghai, even New Zealand, coming to Western Massachusetts for this event specifically. All the golfers participating today were competing for just nine remaining spots in the field for the tournament, which runs Wednesday through Friday at the club this week. It's the fifth consecutive year that Chicopee CC has hosted this tournament, a rare honor for a municipal course. We love coming here. We get massive reviews and raves about the place. In the long run, it's the bottom line. It's what these people are bringing to our course in the city of Chicopee. They're staying in our area hotels. They're eating at our area dining establishments on a week of the Fourth of July when everybody's fleeing to go to the beaches. So it's kind of a win-win for us. The rest of the field for the tournament was set using the AJGA's Performance Points system. That three-day tournament begins Wednesday and runs through Friday. If Chicopee CC is one of your favorite courses in the area and you're looking to play, the pro told me today don't worry. They are still taking tee times after about one o'clock when tournament play wraps up. Each day it's active. Working for you live in Springfield, Duncan McLean, 22 News.
