Guys we landed yesterday in Manila we're so excited to be here we got here pretty late
last night so we just went straight to sleep so far so good I mean we've not like I've said we've
not been here long but everyone's been talking about the dreaded Manila traffic but we actually
got here like pretty quickly after the we got off the plane we just got up so we're gonna get washed
get dressed and we're going to explore the city of Manila yeah we're both really excited about
coming to Manila neither of us have been to the Philippines before we've never been to Manila
and I was doing my research early and I didn't realize how big it is it's absolutely massive
in terms of population it's like over 20 million in the wider metropolitan area it's much bigger
than the likes of New York, Bangkok so it's going to be really interesting to navigate around this
massive city yeah and I think as well we've never been to an Asian city that is um has had such
western influence I guess there's supposed to be a lot of Spanish influence like the Philippines
is literally named after King Philip of Spain there was a lot of American influence it's majority
Christian so it's going to be weird seeing the Spanish and the American influence as well as
seeing churches and cathedrals rather than temples so it's going to be hopefully quite different to
rest of Asia and it's going to be a bit of a change so really excited to see what the city's
got to offer today is our first full day in Manila we have got up a bit late so hopefully
we can get everywhere and get everything done that we wanted to today but I think we're gonna go to
get some food at the famous Jollibee so we're just gonna get ready and then head out but before we do
that we'll just quickly show you our hotel so we're staying at the Sphere Residence and it's
3,400 pesos a night which is a little bit expensive we're hoping we can get cheaper hotels on the
islands um but yeah I'll just show you around this is the toilet, the shower and the sink but yeah it's
a bog standard bathroom but yeah nice and clean and then in here Greg just standing awkwardly
and here we've got like a little sofa a nice big mirror and then our kitchen we've got even like a
little hob and everything microwave little table which we'll probably be doing work on nice big bed
and if you wonder why I'm awkwardly stood here it's because when we were unpacking I closed the
door in a rush and I've closed it too hard so it now just swings open so I was just holding it so
John I can get past it yeah hopefully we won't get charged for that one um nice big tv and then
the best bit is I mean it doesn't look as good in the day but at night all the buildings lit up and
looks really good one thing to mention is that we're currently staying in the Makati area which
is like the financing bit it's really nice quite modern we picked Makati because there were lots
of restaurants and bars lots of cool things to do and it's relatively central yeah but now I need to
get a shower get changed and let's head out for some food so we're at Jollibee and for those of
you who don't know Jollibee is basically a fast food chain there's like over a thousand stores
worldwide and it was founded just outside Manila in Philippines and they're absolutely everywhere
in Manila so we thought we'll give it a go I think looking reading between the lines it looks like
it's a bit of a Filipino version of like a McDonald's or a KFC there's a bit of chicken a bit
right Jolanna do you want to tell us what we've got so we have a crispy chicken burger some spicy
Jollibee chicken with some gravy then we've got the famous spaghetti that's got um like
bits of sausage and cheese on it then I asked the lady what she would recommend and she said
the peppered beef which is a new one to me and instead of fries I've seen that they were doing
these like spice like um what are they called like waffle chips crisps chips so we thought I'd try
that and then I've never seen these before they remind me of like a McDonald's like pudding like
like pie but it's a savory one so they do a tuna one they do a tuna one and this is um a chicken
one so I thought that sounds interesting and then I'm not sure what this one is so that's the chicken
no this is the chicken yes I mean you open that one then I don't know what she's giving me here
I haven't asked for it the chicken but yeah so we're gonna tuck into this um we have had Jollibee
before in Vietnam but it's not had like this much of like a variety of things to try because
Jollibee's like mega famous in in the Philippines um a lot of Filipino people love it yeah so yeah
we're gonna tuck into this and then we're gonna try some desserts as well so let's get eating
so Jordan has gone straight for the spaghetti it's because I really liked it when I went to
Vietnam it was so tasty I wasn't really thinking much because it doesn't look very
like delectable but yeah I was like oh let's try it so and it was really good
and it's a bit weird because in the west you'd never see spaghetti in a fast food place would
what's it
should I try the chicken pot yeah go for it nice
what sauce is it it looks a creamy sauce
it's really savoury like a creamy chicken like and veggie pie really good
so I'm going for Jordan will have to remind me what it is some sort of spicy beef salted
beef salted beef oh no pepper beef peppered beef yeah peppered beef
that is amazing really good is that yeah what's it like it's hard to explain I was gonna say
it's like the sort of food you'd get from like a Chinese takeaway in England
not what I expected but really good that chicken burger looks delicious I love a
chicken burger so I'm excited about this good really good is there any cheese on it
yes oh good good yeah that's really good just as good as KFC in my opinion
one thing that was a little bit surprising we found this a lot in Asia is that the chicken
meat is dark chicken meat so it's either thigh or drumstick in England all the chicken meat you'd
get in burgers or any place is always pressed so Jordan is sometimes a little bit funny when
the chicken meat is a bit dark so see if you like it but for me that's amazing okay I'll take a word
for it I'll have a go in a sec you're gonna try the spice yeah make sure you put some gravy in it
see I would I would rip some off and put it anywhere you loved it
which is better the chicken burger or the spicy chicken
the spicy chicken is nice the bit I'm a bit confused about is I don't really know how you
eat chicken on the bone with rice you rip it off chicken on the bone I just eat with my hands
just pull it off and then put it in with your hands rocket science grand
that's why I prefer the burger I know what to do with the burger can't get it wrong
anyway we're gonna stop talking and we're just gonna tuck in
so our desserts have arrived Jordan do you want to tell everyone what we've got
so we've got just a bog standard chocolate sundae and then we have some more pies
so this is probably saying that really wrong but basically it's like a coconut pie
and then we have a peach and mango pie they do like a ube I think you pronounce it an ube
and cheese pie which is again supposed to be a dessert because ube is like a sweet potato like
yam but in Philippines they normally have it like as a dessert thing so I thought that was
gonna be a weird choice but they didn't have any unfortunately so we might try and get one
another time but yeah we're gonna try these out see if they're nice
so again very similar to a pastry kind of thing
that is very fleshy got massive bits of coconut in but let's actually and I'm not really a big
fan of like big pieces of coconut but that's really nice try the mango and peach one
they're still a bit hot because they've just bathed them
be cheeky just bite in the middle
that's typical Jordana she'll have the middle half I'll have the two crusty
edge halves with no filling buzzing always get to the best bit guys
really sweet really nice I'm not a big sweet fan so I probably won't eat anymore
so Grant's gonna tuck into these now right dessert time I bloody love dessert I've been
waiting for this since we arrived do you like it you looked really concerned it's weird it's
a little bit weird it tastes a bit custardy has it got custard in there no this is just
I think it's like it's got a sauce but I don't think it's custard it's really good I might be
wrong but way better than I expected I think the peach one the peach and mango one's better
yeah better than apple pie this is way better than like a mcdonald's apple pie this is amazing
I'd say for dessert wise it's maybe like 7 out of 10 I like a 9 out of 10
and you love ice cream anyway don't you I'm reserving the 10 for the ice cream because
I'm like a child so I think that's a massive thumbs up from Grant
so we've just finished at Jollibee and we are heading back to our hotel I would say if you're
in Philippines definitely check it out it's like I'd say Jordana let me know if you disagree I
would say it's at least on a par with like the you know that the standard fast food places if
there was like a Mackey's a Subway a KFC and a Jollibee I'd say standard wise it's at least as
good but it has the novelty value because everything's new so I really enjoyed it yeah
I thought it was really nice and I love like spaghetti anyway so that was probably the spaghetti
and the apple pie the chicken pie was probably my favorite I think when you go somewhere fast
food you know it's not gonna be fine dining but the food was nice it was different and also it
and also it's well cheap so it was for the millions of the drinks it was 530 pesos for
the dessert it was another 130 so if you're in Philippines definitely check it out stay tuned
