Hello everyone, this is Yan-chan.
Hello, this is Nana.
I was born in Shanghai and came to Japan when I was 13 years old.
Today, I would like to talk about the difference between Japan and China's universities.
Nana, you've been in Japan since you were in university, haven't you?
I was in Shanghai when I was a freshman and a sophomore.
I went to Japan when I was a sophomore.
So I thought that Japan and China's universities were quite different.
I went to Japan when I was a junior high school student.
So I don't know much about the education system in China since junior high school.
How was the education system in China?
In most Chinese universities, there is a military training before entering the university.
Yes, military training.
Yes, there is a military training and compulsory training.
Of course, those who are physically disabled or sick don't have to take part in the training.
But normal students can take part in the training.
The duration of the training is different depending on the school.
For short-term schools, the training lasts for a week or two.
For long-term schools, the training lasts for a month or so.
It's really hard.
I think most students take part in the training in summer.
In China, students enter the university in September.
Before entering the university in September,
they take a summer vacation in July or August.
It's the most difficult time.
They wear military uniforms and stand for an hour or two.
They do military steps.
They also sing military songs.
They do that for a long time.
It's like a punishment.
In Korea, when a man turns a few years old,
he is allowed to join the military training.
In China, when a man turns a few years old,
he is forced to join the military training.
It's a shortened version of the military training.
Yes.
It's hard, but it's good to train your body.
You can't do that in Japan.
No way.
When I entered a Japanese university,
the first thing that surprised me was
Japanese club activities.
I was so surprised.
Do you have club activities in China?
Yes, but they are more casual.
Japanese clubs are more casual.
When I was in university,
I didn't take part in club activities.
But when I saw the cheerleaders
and the cheerleaders at my school,
I thought it was amazing.
They were so serious.
Girls were like
I don't know what's going on today.
I thought it was a mischief.
I thought it was something ordinary students can do.
I just remembered that
my university has the largest number of club activities
in Japan.
Yes.
On the day of the entrance ceremony,
when students were walking around,
boys showed their skills.
Oh.
In front of the school gate,
boys showed their skills,
danced,
did backflips,
rode on people's bodies,
I was so surprised.
It was like a professional troupe.
Yes.
I was really surprised.
In addition,
there is a place called Okumakodo in Waseda.
Once,
there was a circle
that copied the dance of a kangaroo group.
They were performing there.
When I went in and saw it,
the perfection was really high.
Oh.
Everyone's love for kangaroo stars
was transmitted to me.
Oh.
When I asked them,
they practiced every day
and took a break.
They practiced as if they were giving their lives.
I thought they were doing it seriously.
Yes.
They are really high level.
In addition, there is a club in China.
Do they enjoy it with everyone?
They are really serious.
They also participate in national competitions.
It's a continuation of middle school club activities.
That's right.
People who won the competition
join the club and play games.
There are two types of clubs in Japan.
In the club,
it's okay if you don't join.
It's okay if you join.
In the club,
everyone is serious.
They practice hard
in order to join the club.
I see.
Speaking of club activities,
I remembered one thing.
When Japanese people get a job,
they are always asked
what they did in the club.
It's an important point
for self-promotion.
But in China,
it's not so important.
Even in the job interview,
they are not asked about it.
Their hard work
is reflected in their job.
That's why they are asked
if they can work hard.
Another difference
between China and Japan
is that I came to Japan
when I was in 3rd and 4th grade.
I studied hard
and wrote my graduation thesis.
I studied hard.
When I was in 4th grade,
most of my classmates
left school.
What did they do?
They had an internship.
In Japan,
students have a short-term internship
like a summer vacation.
But in Japan,
most students
work in a company
for 3 to 6 months
to gain experience.
I didn't get a job.
I chose to go to university.
I don't know much about it.
My friends
finished their studies
in 3rd grade.
In 4th grade,
they had a job interview
and a summer vacation.
Of course they had an internship
but they worked
in different companies
to get a job.
They had a job interview
and an interview.
I see.
In China,
they pay attention to
your academic background.
In the interview,
they pay attention to
what job you got
in which company.
Can you get a job
when you have an internship?
Yes, you can.
You are working
like a full-time employee.
You work from 8am to
6pm.
Of course you get paid.
It's cheaper than a full-time employee.
I see.
In Chinese, it's called
实习.
One thing I realized
is that it's easy
to get a job in China.
You just need to
make a standard format
and submit it to different companies.
I have written about
Japanese job interviews.
They are all different formats.
You have to match them
with the company you work for.
You have to write everything
by yourself.
You have to match the company
with the company you work for.
I think 30-40 companies
are the limit.
In China,
you have to
submit your resume
to the HR department
in order to get a job.
I see.
Then you interview
and submit your resume.
In my university,
I had to study hard
to get into a good company.
I had to wait until I graduated.
I see.
Do people who study hard
think they are not
as good as the company?
I don't know.
I don't know if it affects
the company.
I don't think it's that big.
One thing I was surprised about
is that the age gap is so big.
In Japan,
in my university,
the age gap is so big.
Even 8th graders
were surprised
how much they liked the university.
How many people can't study?
It's not that they can't study.
They don't study.
They can study, but they don't know.
They don't have a degree.
They just want to go to the university.
Yes, they just want to go to the university.
There were many people
who wanted to study for a year or two.
I understand people who study hard
to get into a good company.
But I don't understand
people who study hard
to get into a good company.
I think it's a different way of thinking.
In China, people who study hard
are very shameful.
From elementary school to high school,
people who study hard
are considered bad.
I don't want to study hard.
Murakami Haruki from Daibun High School
went to Waseda University
for 8 years.
My best friend
also studied hard
for about 3 years.
The reason is
that she is smart
and can study hard.
But she wanted to be a dancer.
She wanted to pursue her dream
of becoming a dancer.
So she stopped studying
and went to competitions
She spent a lot of money
to study hard.
But she went back to university
and graduated.
I think Japanese people
are more interested in studying hard.
I think so.
One more thing
that surprised me
is that when I first
went to Kyushu University,
there was a girls' university
next to my school.
The girls of my university
were smoking.
I was so surprised.
I've never seen a girl
smoking in a university in China.
But when I went to a university in Japan,
there were a lot of girls who smoked.
My junior
was also a heavy smoker.
By the way,
Japanese people
are allowed to smoke
from the age of 20.
Everyone is smoking
from the age of 20.
I don't know why
there are so many girls
who smoke.
I don't know why,
but I think girls' cigarettes
are delicious.
I've had one before
and it tasted like fruit.
It also tasted like mint.
Japanese cigarettes are easy to smoke.
I was surprised
when I saw a teacher and a student
smoking together.
I was like,
I can't imagine
smoking with a teacher
in China.
Students can't smoke
in front of a teacher.
Students have a bad image
of smoking.
I can't imagine
smoking with a teacher.
Another big difference
is that
Chinese universities
don't have seminars.
They only have classes.
Why is that?
Universities are similar
to Japanese universities.
For example,
Japanese, Korean, English
There are four classes
in Japanese university.
Each teacher
is different.
Most of the classes
are taught by
each teacher.
The teacher teaches
the basics of each class.
There are no seminars.
That's interesting.
I'm a English literature major
in the Faculty of Education.
I study English literature.
English literature is
very vague.
First,
first-year students take
a basic class.
After that, they study
English pronunciation,
American Literature,
British Literature,
and more.
They study
different subjects.
In Chinese universities,
there is a compulsory lesson
and a free choice
for students.
But in Japanese universities,
students take a class.
I see.
In Japan,
there is no class.
From the first
to the second year,
students take a class
once or twice a week.
Other classes are free.
From the third year to the fourth year,
students take a seminar.
There are about 10 students.
They announce the results.
They study with
the teacher and announce the results.
At the end,
they finish the graduation thesis
according to the seminar.
That's all.
There is no such thing in China.
It's totally different.
If there is a class,
students can get along with each other.
In Japan,
students get along
in a circle.
Students make friends
in a circle.
Students make friends in class,
but it's rare.
In Chinese universities,
there are many compulsory subjects.
Students can get along.
I envy that.
One more thing.
In Japanese universities,
high schools and junior high schools,
there is a festival.
It's not a festival.
It's a school festival.
There is no such thing in China.
There is no school festival.
School festival is a unique culture in Japan.
It's fun.
I envy that.
We get tens of millions of yen
from sponsors
and hold events.
We leave it
to students.
In addition,
there is a circle for school festivals.
There is a circle called Jikkoinkai.
Members of the circle
invite sponsors
and celebrities.
It's fun.
In the university I went to,
there was no school festival.
For example,
there was a big event in September.
The gym was set up as a stage.
There were dancers
and singers.
It was like a festival.
It was like a school festival.
Each department
had their own show.
It was like a performance.
Not all students
participated in the show.
Only those with special skills
performed.
Others just watched.
That's interesting.
It's totally different.
In the university,
each circle has a booth
and sponsors
perform.
Everyone participates
and enjoys.
That's different.
It's fun.
Speaking of that,
universities in China and Japan are different.
Studying, club activities,
school festivals,
and jobs are different.
