Hello, I'm P'Den Uthaya. Today, I will take you to visit Wat Mahathat.
At Wat Mahathat, we may get information from the King of Savadhan, Kungsri Uthaya.
Or from the history of Wat Mahathat.
But today, I will tell you from another point of view.
Which is the point of view of the foreigners who came to see this Wat Mahathat in the time of Kungsri Uthaya.
And recorded as a commentary.
Which is a very interesting story.
The King of Savadhan, Luang Prasert Aksornnit, recorded the reconstruction of Wat Mahathat as
Sakkara 736 Khansok.
The King of Savadhan.
And Maha Thera Dhammakalayan.
Established by Sri Rattanamahathat.
In front of Wat Ban Singh.
This temple was built according to the ancient custom.
The important city of Buddhism.
There must be Wat Banju Phraparamasareerikatat.
As the central center of the city.
Which will have various names.
Wat Mahathat.
Or Wat Phra Sri Rattanamahathat.
As in Kungsri Uthaya.
Use the short name as Wat Mahathat.
And is the place where the important ceremony is held.
With the eminent monk Khamavasi.
Residing in the temple.
In the reign of the second King of Sampraya.
When the King was able to visit the King of Luang.
The King asked him to bring the image of the Buddha.
The image of a lion.
Animals.
The number of deities that can be attached to the King of Luang.
To worship at Wat Mahathat.
But when Kungsri Uthaya.
Was lost to Hongsawadee in the year of 2112.
King Burengnong.
Please bring the image of all the deities at Wat Mahathat.
Returned to Hongsawadee.
This is the image of Wat Mahathat.
In Phra Nakhon Sri Ayutthaya.
Which was taken in the reign of.
The King of Sampraya.
Which is a picture that the image still has perfection.
Until suddenly.
Phra Prang.
Was destroyed.
With evidence.
From the Ministry of Education documents.
During the reign of the fifth King.
Stated that.
This Phra Prang.
Was destroyed at 5 a.m.
On the 25th of August.
Ratanakosin Sok 123.
Or.
Puthasakarat 2447.
But if we go back to the time of Kungsri Ayutthaya.
The King of Sampraya has written that.
Phra Prang Wat Mahathat.
Was destroyed for the first time.
In the reign of the Lord Buddha.
Until suddenly.
Entering the reign of the Lord Buddha.
Prasatthong.
The King asked for a new Phra Prang.
As the King of Sampraya has written.
Sakkarat 995.
Year of the dead.
Phra Prang Wat Mahathat.
Was destroyed.
In the reign of the 19th King.
Yod Nopphasun 3.
So stated that.
In the reign of the Lord Buddha.
The log in the king.
High line.
Yod Nopphasun curved.
Combined into 5 lines.
The log is crooked.
To bring the log to kill.
Followed.
Take a plus.
9 months.
To celebrate.
But the document.
About the destruction of the Phra Prang.
Is quite detailed.
Is the document.
The log.
Of the office of the company.
India.
Of the Netherlands.
Or VOC.
Ayutthaya.
Which this document.
Is part of.
Jeremies.
Or One Wallis.
One Wallis told.
About the temple.
Phra Prang of the temple.
Suddenly.
Broken down.
In the year.
1632.
Around August.
Without effect.
From the weather.
This event.
Considered.
As a foreshadowing.
But the powerful.
And fierce.
Will not reveal.
Their deeds.
Since then.
Phra Prang of that.
By the king.
Of the Lord Buddha.
So it was rebuilt.
And almost complete.
In 1633.
With a height.
200 feet.
But all.
Broken down.
Again.
Unexpectedly.
As in the previous year.
Anyway.
The construction.
Began again.
And completed.
Beautifully.
Phra Prang.
From the top.
To the base.
Covered with.
Wood.
And covered with gold.
There are a number of.
Golden Buddha statues.
And a lot of money.
Buried inside.
Phra Prang.
From this piece of evidence.
Make the information.
There is a difference.
From the King.
Sawadarm.
The claim is.
Phra Prang.
Has collapsed.
In the government.
Of the Lord Buddha.
Golden Buddha.
If it is the government.
Of the Lord Buddha.
Songtham.
And there is a collapse.
Down.
Up to twice.
Which is the second time.
This.
Occurred.
During construction.
Almost done.
Anyway.
Phra Prang.
This temple.
Can be worshiped.
Until.
The end.
Not only.
Phra Prang.
Reconstruction.
To be perfect.
The same.
Success.
Phra Prasatthong.
Also.
Please.
To worship.
Various parts.
Of the temple.
As well.
As.
Appeared.
Artistic.
In the era.
Of the Lord Buddha.
Such as.
The wall.
Is a light channel.
Like a crescent moon.
On the building.
Viharn Luang.
Which can be compared.
With the model.
Appeared.
At Wat Chai Watthanarab.
Or.
Chong.
Sumkhong.
Songkri.
Bua.
Persia.
Artistic.
On the wall.
On the outside.
Of the temple.
Which is considered.
Persia.
Artistic.
That began.
As a popular place.
In the era.
Of the Lord Buddha.
On Tuesday.
Still.
Talk about.
The atmosphere.
Of the important ceremony.
At Wat Mahathat.
By.
Talk about.
The grand procession.
On the way.
The grand procession.
A dignified costume.
Each elephant.
Has the instances of their king.
Sitting on a golden Peterson.
Behind the procession.
There are soldiers walking behind.
With too Japanese soldiers.
White.
Wielding good fighting instruments.
Following by.
The musicians.
After the Heavenly King.
When the king lands.
On the back of the elephant.
Long.
Hanging putting on the Lord.
By.
Magnolia of gold l.)
Songpiramith.
Surrounded by.
Wells of water.
Back of hope full to the sky.
with a large number of monks and nuns.
The number of people who attended the ceremony was
between 6,000 and 7,000.
The ceremony was attended by kings from the royal family
and various nationalities,
and most of the royal family members
were allowed to participate in the ceremony.
And there were many other ceremonies
where Dutch people were invited
to participate in the ceremony at Wat Mahathat
which is called Wat Na Prathat.
Van Wallis has described this temple
in more detail by saying
that the temple was built skillfully and interestingly.
The ground floor was decorated
with gold and stone statues
of more than 800-900 statues.
Many statues were very tall
and the smallest one was 3 feet tall.
The statues were so tall that they could not move their heads
or legs.
There were also many small statues
that were almost countless
and were placed around the large statues.
The monks covered the neck and chest of each large statue
according to the tradition of Siam.
There is a document of a Dutchman
named Christbeg Heg
who came to Krungsri Aithuya in 1655
which was at the end of the reign
of King Prasatthong.
Heg had the opportunity to visit many important temples
in Phra Nakhon.
There was one temple that he did not name
and said that it was the important temple of the King.
He read about it and assumed
that it was Wat Mahathat.
At the same time,
we still see the most beautiful Jedi
of some monks,
especially the four monks,
the big monk and the small monk.
The big monk was for the king
and the small monk was for the queen
which was built beautifully
without any cost.
There was a large dome
with a beautiful statue
and the statue was surrounded
and people could walk around.
The side of the dome could go up the stairs
and there was a door that did not open
for anyone to enter
except for the King.
In the old days,
the entrance to the temple
was a statue of worship
with a golden door in the dome
that was built for this purpose.
On each side, there was a stone temple
guarding the entrance.
Each statue had a tiger in front
which is said to have fought and conquered.
From there, we walked under the wide and very long hall
that was built around the Jedi statue
in a large square shape
with a large golden statue
that was very expensive
and made us almost look over the smaller statue.
Both the medium and small sizes
were too many to count.
Many statues were made of copper and other metals.
Most of them were bronze statues
even though in the dome
or most importantly, there was a Buddha statue
which had both medium and small sizes.
All of them were handsome from pure gold.
However,
even though they show respect
and pay attention to the unparalleled art
of the temples that they visited
it is impossible to criticize the faith
of the Siamese people
which seems to be arrogant in the eyes of the Dutch.
Van Wallis himself has criticized
in his diary
that a large amount of money
was spent in vain
to worship at this funny place
but the outsiders who were lost
in their faith
lost their hope
that their prosperity
would come from that worship.
Therefore, Siam is like a cup
without a bottom
and will always be like that
because all the money
was spent on the construction
The same is the case with the Christ Blackhead's diary
which often highlights the attitude
in the eyes of the Westerners
who focus on the economy
rather than faith in religion.
And during the visit to Wat Mahathat
he also said that
those who followed us to the back
were the monks and the people
They seemed to be very cheerful
but we couldn't help laughing
when we saw such a funny ritual
they laughed at us
and didn't say anything
This is just one point of view
of the Westerners
who have a different culture from us
but it is an important historical record
that shows the difference in faith
And this is the point of view
of the foreigners who came to see Wat Mahathat
in the time of Ayutthaya Kungsri
Although there are some points of view
that we may be disappointed
but I would like you to understand
that the point of view of foreigners
who have different cultures
and different ideas from us
If we have a chance to go to their hometown
we may also see something
that is eye-catching
Therefore, we keep it as historical information
It's not that we keep it
and we feel bad to the people who record it
because at least the people who record
these stories are the source
of our future history
This is the end of Hidden Ayutthaya
See you next time
Goodbye
