City of Garland unveils new downtown square

What's a big day for the city of Garland? They are welcoming all residents there and people across the DFW area to a big groundbreaking celebration that kicks off this morning. There to tell us more is the mayor Mayor Scott LeMay. Thank you for joining us. Good morning, Mayor. Thank you, T. C. I'm glad to be here. Glad to have you. Okay, so I understand you are celebrating the end of a big project that truly changed the face of downtown Garland. So tell us about that. Absolutely. We are having our grand opening celebration today. This has been a two year construction project, a total $28 million reinvestment in our downtown square. We're good. The event starts at 10. We have live music and just things going on all day today. Tonight at 7 30 Garland's own Leanne Rimes takes the stage. Wow, that's pretty cool. Okay, so what should the got me pretty excited there. What should the taxpayers of the city know about this new downtown area? Do you have any new features in downtown Garland as well? Well, absolutely. You know, in the renovations were they include the streets. We have replaced all the streets and sidewalks for 14 blocks. We have reimagined the square. It's got an event space. It's got a playground. It's got a water feature. It's got an area. You know, there are tables where you can just sit and have a cup of coffee, have lunch. But otherwise, we can do anything out here. I love that. That is awesome. Okay, so let's talk about today's event. So, uh, you know, I am a foodie, so I gotta ask you, will there there be food and also music involved as well? Absolutely. There'll be. We've got food trucks. We've got our downtown restaurants are gonna be open. Everybody's gonna be eating, having a good time. Music. We've got live music scheduled all day at 11 o'clock. It starts with our own Garland Square Pickers. Some of the best bluegrass you'll ever hear. We've got live bands throughout today. We've got our Garland Symphony Orchestra brass section and again, Leanne rhymes tonight. You can go to visit Garland TX dot com and you can see the full event schedule. Now, is that the special hometown guests that you were just you were you were talking about? Is she the hometown guests? Because that was my question. You keep answering it, buddy. Absolutely. You know, Leanne grew up here. There's a there's a building just over my shoulder here. The Garland Opry where she started singing when she was a kid. So this is this is where she began. That is so cool. Okay, let's talk about your first ever drone show. I'm learning so much. You may see me out there, buddy. I mean, I may have to sleep, but you know, hey, you just you just give me a call. We'll get you in here. We're having a drone show. The drone show will be right before Leanne goes on. I have never seen one in person, so I'm looking forward to it as much as you. Oh, I love the sound of that there. Okay, thank you so much.
