Buddha statue and the life story of a sculptor
Sculpting is the art of regret
You want the work to be perfect and flawless
But in sculpting, it's almost impossible
That Buddha statue is my passion for a very long time
I used to sculpt quite quickly
But this time is different
Professor Chung Kwon-Lun was one of the most famous sculptors in China
He was the creator of some of the greatest statues of his time
He was awarded many artistic awards
and was the director of the Sculpting Institute and the Sculpting Research Institute of Son Dong Art Institute
However, when he entered the golden age of his career
Chung Kwon-Lun became a victim of the French colonial rule in China
All the officials' love and respect for him faded away
when he continued to maintain his faith
He was imprisoned four times
beaten
tortured
deceived
and abused
After all the ups and downs
Chung Kwon-Lun still chose love over art
He founded one of the most remarkable art exhibitions in the world in the next 20 years
The exhibition of the art of Chan Thien Nhan
It was only established in 2004
Up to now, the art of Chan Thien Nhan has appeared more than 1,000 times
in more than 50 countries around the world
From New York to Paris
From Toronto to Milan
It not only shows the beauty of contemporary art and sculpture
but also shows one of the most serious human rights crimes of our time
The French colonial rule
The sculptor and student of the New Artist Institute
Ms. Johanna Zweig
told me about her impression of Professor Chung Kwon-Lun
The meeting with Professor Chung Kwon-Lun
is an important milestone in my artistic journey
I was very surprised at the extraordinary talent and patience
that he had for his work
But the biggest impression that he left in me
was his compassion and joy
after all that he had to go through when he was imprisoned in China
His spirit was not vulgar
but completely the opposite
His mission was very clear
His art was never personal
but always honored the truth and beauty
with all the best things
One day, he had to work on a few projects
Each project required high skill
But there was one sculpture that always gave him more energy
It was the sculpture of Buddha
Professor Chung Kwon-Lun
began to aspire to sculpt a statue of Buddha
more than 20 years ago
in his journey to find the meaning of life
In 1985
I built a 15-meter-tall statue in Hung Long
In 1986
I built a 30-meter-tall statue of the Great Wall of China
It was the tallest statue in China at that time
I reached the peak of my career
but I was not satisfied
No matter how much money and fame you have
these things only exist for a few decades
I think my life is meaningless
In 1989
Professor Chung Kwon-Lun moved to Montreal
and taught at the prestigious Macau University
where he trained Nobel laureates
politicians
Oscar-winning artists
and Olympic champions of Canada
From there until 1996
he returned to China to take care of his wife
When I returned to China
just got off the plane
I saw the Falun Gong was being spread very quickly
On the top of all the grass
every square meter
they were practicing Falun Gong meditation
It was wonderful
Professor Chung quickly got in touch with Falun Gong
found the meaning of life
and decided to become a practitioner
But the joy did not last long
In 1999
the Communist Party of China began a campaign to suppress Falun Gong
Millions of people lost their jobs
Many people were imprisoned, tortured and even killed
The Communist Party of China used all the media
newspapers, radio and television stations of the country
even mobilized both the military and the police
The whole country was engulfed in terror
It was a large-scale hunt
At that time
I wanted to make a statue of Buddha at a height of 75 meters
But because I practiced Falun Gong
I was put on the blacklist
and was always in a dangerous state
I also became a victim of the suppression and was detained
While the suppression took place
Mr. Chung was brave enough to write a letter to the government
saying that Falun Gong was good for society
In July 2000
he was arrested by the police
and tortured by a power pole
His masterpiece
describes himself when he had to endure a form of torture
popular in the suppression in China
Chung Kunlun recalls
You can smell the burnt skin
His legs and arms were badly bruised
His left leg was seriously injured
to the point where he was unable to walk for 3 months
In December
he was transferred to a rural labor camp
and underwent brainwashing
Psychological torture was even worse
Their goal was not to let us wake up to think for even a second
I was watched by a group of soldiers 24 hours a day
After brainwashing, blackmail, coercion and psychological assault
I almost fainted
Such mental torture
was even worse than torture
They transferred me to a rural labor camp
I was prepared to die there
The camp was a place of silence
because Falun Gong practitioners were tortured to death
I didn't think I could survive
In the face of my surprise
they used a completely different approach
A deputy police officer said
We have an art teacher here
Can you teach him to draw?
I said I didn't care
Then he forced me to sit there
He brought a pen, ink and paper to tell me to draw
I drew with a 2-stroke pen
He recorded it
They showed it to the public to deceive everyone
This made me feel the most painful
The impact on the spirit of the incident
still continues to this day
This camp was also used by communist officials
to deal with Canadian officials
who were putting pressure on the party's government
To rescue Mr. Chuong Konlun
Chinese officials claimed
that Mr. Chuong had given up Falun Gong
and started working for the government
However, with the help of the International Charity Organization
and the Canadian government
Mr. Chuong was released on January 10, 2001
He returned to Canada
determined to protect freedom of speech more than ever
A large number of Falun Gong practitioners are still in prison
I have to speak up for them to prevent harm
I can't just care about my own happiness
But what should I do?
Art is my job
I can only do something through art
I have considered starting an art exhibition
I can't call on Chinese practitioners
because they are being harmed
So I have been looking for artists abroad
I called and emailed
I started looking for them everywhere
At that time
we had gathered 15 artists who wanted to join us
At first, we were not sure how to do it
Because I have experience in painting
So in many cases
I built the layout and others drew
The first exhibition took place in 2004
in Washington DC, USA
My goal is to make the governments around the world
aware of this issue and call for justice
In the exhibition, some members of the Congress came to see
Most of them were shocked
They said that there should be more people coming to see those paintings
That impressed us
So we started exhibiting them all over the world
Along with participating in the creation of art works
and displaying them all over the world
Mr. Chung Kwon-Lun continues to dream of making the most perfect statue of Buddha
even though he has completed that work many times
Painting is the art of regret
You want the work to be perfect and flawless
But in painting, it is almost impossible
The statue of Buddha is my heart and soul
for a very long time
I used to paint quite quickly
But this time is different
Ms. Johanna Schweiger-Huytuong
I remember I was very touched
when I saw a large sculpture
made in a sophisticated way in his workspace
The image of Buddha as if coming from another world
expressed the pure, pure heart that made me fall
The survivor of the disaster of the Thai genocide
The scholar and artist of the Aos
Mr. Victor Franco wrote that
Everything can shine a light on the suffering
The suffering that Mr. Chung had to go through with his devotion to art
has become a reason
a sweet taste of faith
compassion, justice, and beauty for all people
The video produced based on the essay of the filmmaker
