2022 BASSMASTER ELITE SERIES PRO Follow along my journey as I attempt to catch trophy bass, hone my craft, entertain, and share my learning experiences.
all right guys so it is my favorite time
of the year right now to fish actually
just because the baits that you get to
use and it's kind of a grind but talking
about something a lot cooler today this
is one of the most awesome things I've
ever seen in the fishing industry like
I'm so happy about this just got this
box in today couldn't wait to open it
but this is unbelievable we're going to
take this out and I'm going kind of show
y'all what this is right there
you can see it's numbered it's number
number 13 Hunters called divs on number
13 these are all numbered I'm going to
show y'all what it is basically it's a
spool of sunline shooter a signature
spool this is to commemorate the aoi win
that I had this year sunline is going to
do this for all their Pros going forward
really really cool that I'm the first
one in America to get a sunline
commerative spool for win an aoi so I
mean it's really really awesome it comes
with a actual card in here that says to
honor Kyle welchire on behalf of sunline
all this stuff it's got the spool with
sticker that you can stick on it it's 20
lb sunline shooter but it's a lot more
of a collector's item but this is just I
mean just awesome you see down there in
the bottom says number 13 I got number
one for myself I'm going to keep number
one the first spol look at that that
just turned out absolutely sick you know
in today's day and age of tournament
bass fishing and sponsorships and stuff
like that these companies start to just
expect a lot of social media and expect
you know a lot of work and stuff like
that which is which is right you know
like I do a lot of work for my sponsors
and stuff but to show a company like
sunline to for them to show me how much
they're going to give back and do
something like this to kind of celebrate
the biggest accomplishment of my life
thus far just means a ton and that's why
I align myself with companies like
sunline because they do stuff like this
you know they call you in the offseason
and to see how you're doing not to tell
you that you're getting you know cut
down you know like we're we're it's a
relationship and a friendship and it
just means a ton for them to bag me like
this for years and years since I've been
a rookie I got with sunline my rookie
year and for them to come out and then
to make something like this for me it
just means a ton you know and they just
they really want to celebrate and
they're really proud of me so if y'all
want to go get one of these they're
available at the sunline website right
now very very limited number less Le
than 300 of these are going to be
available probably closer to 200 are
going to be available and that's not
very many whenever you talk about the
fishing industry as a whole can get one
so if you want to get one you better
hurry you better run to the sunline
website link in the description we will
put the link in the description and this
is 20 lb sunline shooter and we're about
to go fish right now with some 20 lb
sunline shooter and probably catch a
bass or two so awesome shout out to
sunline I appreciate it that is
absolutely unbelievable super sick it
turns out it it turned out it looks
awesome from what I heard they did some
of these in Japan years ago for a couple
Japanese Anglers and then also for Aaron
Martins which obviously he is you know a
phenomenal fisherman one of the best
fisherman of all time really analytical
when it came to line and hooks and baits
and stuff like that so for them to
appreciate him years back in Japan
that's really really cool but these have
never been sold before in America so
you'll be the one of the first people to
go get one if y'all go order one from
sunline so that's awesome and I
appreciate it shout out to sunline about
to go catch a bass with 20 lb sunline
shooter all right guys since we're on
the subject of fishing line I'm going to
kind of walk y'all through the
properties that make me pick one fishing
line over another you see right here
these are the fishing lines that I use
throughout the course of a year now some
of these need to be refilled but this is
an awesome thing that I got for
Christmas couple years ago and that
thing has made been a lifesaver because
I use a ton of different types of
fishing l line and it makes I have to
dig stuff out and find somebody to hold
it and then burn my wife Hunter's
fingers all up while I'm spooling the
line on the Reel but you know there's
people think about fishing line and it
goes from you know people thinking that
there's one type of fishing line and
that's is what you use for fishing you
know monofilament they buy at Walmart
put on reels and there's nothing wrong
with that that's actually the the kind
of the Grassroots of fishing but there's
tons of different types and a lot lot of
people ask me what line do you use for
this and why to use it for this I'm
going to do a brief overview of exactly
why I use certain lines for certain
things you know I've got a lot of
different types of line in here this
right here is braid you know but I've
got these two boxes right here these
bags soft bags from sunline these are
really really cool and this is how I
store a ton of braid throughout the
course of a year so you can see that's
all my all my spinning rod braid goes in
here so I've got a couple different
types in here for some different reasons
like this right here is the D braid this
is going to be rebranded improved a
little bit and it's going to be a
different name for this coming out very
very soon but the reason to throw this
is super thin diameter the D braid
actually sinks you know kind of not as
fast as a fluorocarbon but it actually
sinks so that light line situations and
heavy current I like to get that line
down there and you know if you have a
line a braid line that floats and you're
in a lot of current you'll get a big bow
in your line this helps you not do that
in those situations where you need that
now the one that I've been using the
most by far
recently is the new sunline AMZ braid
this and the OverWatch which uh I may be
out of OverWatch cuz I've been using it
a lot also also too let's see if I got
some I got some I got a sample of
OverWatch that's all I've got left those
two braides are very very smooth
casting you know like no coating on it
cast super super well super limp I can
make super long cast it ties Notch
really really well and that's the reason
that I go to the AMZ or the OverWatch
braid AMZ comes in Orange fluorescent
orange usually if I'm using that I tie
FG knot have a longer
lader then I use the xplasma also this
is kind of if I'm going to use a rod you
know like if I'm going to spool up braid
on a rod and kind of leave it on there
for a while it's usually going to be the
as OA xplasma whatever want to call it
that's kind of what I use the most or
for the longest is actually that type of
braid cuz it has that coating on it and
it actually has like a break-in period
is what it seems like so that line
actually cast better after using it for
a day or two
so this is actually
my what is this this is a lot of my
braid for frogs and swim Jigs and bait
cash and all that type of stuff I keep
the tried and true
sx1 this is a four strand braid four
carrier braid I like this a lot for
matte fishing you know anytime fishing
in slop anytime I'm way back in he in
heavy vegetation that four strand braid
will really cut through that grass and
get it out and four strand braid is
actually a Little Bit Stronger per
diameter than a eight strand braid the
other one that I use a ton is actually
on here it's going to be the same thing
the AMZ it's right here it's a it's 50
lb AMZ 60 lb AMZ 35 lb AMZ that is is a
very smooth casting line so when I spool
up new new braid the night before a
tournament I'm always going to use the
AMZ because what that does is soon as I
spool it up I'm already going to be able
to cast that bait you know as good as I
possibly can as good as my ability will
allow me to because it's not a rigid
braid that has a lot of coating on it
and stuff like that that when you take
line off and put new line on it's going
to be very very consistent and it's also
very strong and very smooth and that's
the braid that I've been using the most
for all my power fishing stuff in the in
recent months and I keep some sunline
xplasma ASA whatever you want to call it
I keep some of that in here for
specifically punching in mats cuz the
xplasma asaga and then the sx1 those two
are the strongest braids that I've ever
used I believe like those they are super
super strong so when I'm in that super
heavy cover I really want to go that
route cuz I know it's not going to fail
I know it's not going to break I have
never ever broke 60 lb X plasma break so
I mean that stuff is absolutely
juice now we got a couple different
options we got shooter as far as floc
carbon goes we've got sniper and then
only other one I really use is the crank
FC I do have some of the do strike in
here and I like it you know a lot in
certain situations but I don't really
know why I would use it over one of the
other ones so I have used this for
vibrating jigs just because because it's
designed for vibrating Jigs and it
really it feels like I hook them really
really well on it like it's got a little
bit more stretch kind of sniper is it it
feels like sunline sniper as far as
stretch goes and I really really do like
it but when I'm in a bind and I'm
packing to go to a tournament typically
I just take shooter and I take sniper
and then I take the crank FC so these
kind of go in order of stretch now the
crank FC has the most stretch this line
feels feels like monofilament like it it
casts like monofilament but it it is
fluorocarbon but it's it's got more
properties that are resemble
monofilament line and one of the main
things that I've been doing with this in
recent years is when it's really really
cold this more rigid braid um
fluorocarbon is tough to cast when it's
really really cold light baits you know
I throw the OG tiny4 a dt4 a dt6 cast
really well no matter what but a dt4 and
OG tiny those types of baits very
difficult to
cast especially when it's cold and that
line starts starts to get you know a
little bit more memory to it and stuff
like that so the FC crank is definitely
the line that I can throw the furthest
the most consistently and then also
those fish just kind of get get that
mush mouth that time of year whenever
it's really cold and they'll just kind
of kind of you know barely suck in the
bait and that extra stretch really helps
a ton of me you know giving them an
extra second before I lean into them and
actually get them coming to the boat so
the FC crank really really good for
light
baits really good for consistency as far
as casting goes and then really good in
cold watera in cold water FC sniper very
very similar application for me I
typically use the FC sniper kind of
alongside with the FC crank I just kind
of go back and forth one or the other
the sniper cast extremely well if I'm
bomb cast casting you know heavier baits
cuz a sniper comes in all the way up to
a 20 lb line if I'm cranking you know a
big bulky Square Bill around wood I want
to go 16 18 lb line I'm usually going to
use the sniper for that vibrating jigs
all that type of stuff usually the
sniper is a really good application for
that now if I'm going to be the sniper
or the do strike kind of go hand inand
for those two if I'm going to be high
impact throwing a ChatterBait up super
shallow seeing them eat it or feeling
the bite and really setting the hook
hard like you're not supposed to but I
can't help but do I'm going to go to the
shooter because it's it's going to
handle that impact a whole lot better
than the sniper is but this has a little
bit less Str stretch than the crank FC a
lot more affordable for a lot of people
you know I've caught a bunch of bass in
my life flipping 25lb sniper you know
skipping a jig on her boat docks with 20
lb sniper and it's still a very strong
line but whenever I need that high
impact that's what I'm going to go want
to go to the shooter so basically the
main reasons that I'm going to use this
line or this line is because how much
better they actually perform on a cast
and how much more accurately I can cast
those little baits whenever that line is
not kind of hindering the cast now if I
know for
sure that I'm going to be straight
cranking like big giant rocks big Bluffs
all that type of stuff with like a dt6
getting it down there and 7t of water
and just kind of grind it on those rocks
I'm going to use 10 lb shooter cuz I
know the abrasion resistance is just
going to be there whenever I'm I'm
fishing that bait so I can grind on
those rocks and then hook a big one and
never really be scared that I'm that
fish is going to break off I just back
my drag off and I fight that fish and
and get them back to the boat so I will
use the shooter for cranking quite a bit
but it's only in those situations where
I know my line is going to get beat up
and dinged up and stuff like that so
that's something that I use for cranking
that some a lot of people don't but the
main thing for shooter is impact this
thing right th this line can handle the
impact it it can handle the big hook
sets you know slack lining them dragging
them through cover pulling them out of
log jams metal docks that this is going
to be the line for all that all those
like really intense applications so I
usually use for me I use a I use 14 lb
up 14 to 22 is is what I use the most I
use 25 you know rarely but I use 28 ton
just like that signature spool that just
came out that's that's 20 lb because
that's the one that I use the absolute
most but this is definitely the line
that handles the impact and it doesn't
get a lot of memory in it it's just
whenever it's cold the line is uh less
malleable and kind of less manageable
whenever it's cold so that's one thing
to remember you don't want to spool up
some 10 lb shooter and then go try to
throw a tiny little crankbait with it
because you're going to have to fight
with it whenever it's 40° outside or 20
20° outside or some of the guys live up
north it might be colder than that but I
don't want no part of nothing colder
than about 40° so this line right here
is the is the heavy lifter this is the
one right here that I you see me
skipping around ace jig or you know
flipping the Bronco bug and heavy cover
it's going to be on 22 lb sunline
shooter 99% of the time that that's just
what I use now there's a couple more
types of line that I keep with me this
is sunline FC leader this is the it is
the strongest and most sensitive line
that I've ever used for a leader thing
about it is it's got even less stretch
and whenever you're using you know braid
Mainline attached to a leader you have
to consciously know that you just need
to lean into them because if you set the
hook too hard with a spinning rod like
you're not supposed to but sometimes I
do throwing a Shaky Head out there or a
drop shot and they bite it and my drag
is a little too tight and I lean to them
a little too hard with 8 lb line that
line is going to have a harder time
absorbing that shock because it is it
has less stretch so you're going to be
able to max out that actual um pound
test and break that line a little bit
more often but it's super sensitive
super strong and I use it a lot for my
leader line but the number one leader
line that I use is still the sunline
shooter it's got the right blend of
everything for me that's what I catch a
lot in big smallmouth on this year is
sunlight is 8 or 10 lb sunline shooter
as a leader so that's the lines that I
keep with me and a brief overview of the
properties so the Fluor carbon the
biggest thing is the amount of stretch
and the amount of abrasion resistance
when you get to less stretch you get to
a better abrasion resistance better
sensitivity better feel less cast
ability when you get to more stretch you
get to a better cast ability you get
less sensitivity and then you get less
abrasion resistance so it's kind of a
spectrum there that you kind of have to
thread the needle on with the baits that
you actually prefer and kind of figure
out your system for that and all that
changes based on the ride you're using
if you're throwing a crankbait on a
stiffer Rod you can get away with the FC
or you know the FC crank is going to
help you if you're throwing a a
crankbait that's got really big like 2x
trebles on it and you're throwing a
really light rod and really stretchy
line you're probably not going to get
those hooks in past the Barb so just as
important as the line is the system as
far as the rod that you're using on
those baits also so kind of a brief
overview but that's all the stuff that I
keep with me this is literally my box
that I travel with or my three boxes
that I travel with to every single Elite
Series tournament this is the you know
the sunline bag y'all see me rigging
before the tournaments y'all see this
bag laying out y'all see these camo bags
laying everywhere because I do you know
always have to get some stuff out of
there for a tournament so hope that
answered a couple questions and then
shed a little bit of light and then some
of y'all I know watch this video even
though you already knew all this stuff
and I appreciate that also so all this
stuff is available at the sunline
website so while you're over there go
ahead and check it out but we will leave
a link in the description to that
signature spool if you want to go get it
so appreciate y'all watching we'll see
y'all
