Pregnancy comes with its share of discomfort, and a common symptom that people experience is round ligament pain. As your baby grows, it tugs on the round ligaments, causing sudden jolts of abdominal or pelvic pain. These sharp pains can be really uncomfortable, but don't worry, we've got you covered!
In this video, we'll explain why round ligament pain occurs during pregnancy, provide practical tips to ease the discomfort, and share advice on different types of pregnancy belly bands that can provide some extra support.
Round ligament pain is really common in pregnancy.
It's a form of abdominal pain that you might experience.
And this happens because the round ligaments
help to support the uterus in the pelvis.
It attaches to the pelvis.
And as the uterus grows,
it stretches on the ligaments as well.
As you move around, the uterus is pretty flexible.
So it can also shift its position
and sort of pull on these ligaments.
And so that might come across
as the sudden intense abdominal or pelvic pain.
Things that can help alleviate the pain
is just trying to switch positions, rest, relaxation.
You can try to do some stretches,
but also swimming, a warm bath can help alleviate it as well
and what's commonly used among a lot of pregnant women
is an abdominal binder to help provide that support.
There isn't always too much you can do
to prevent round ligament pain,
but practicing good posture, performing routine exercises,
and even seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist
can help to try to reduce the risk of round ligament pain.
If the pain is severe or persistent
and nothing has helped to alleviate it,
it's really important to contact your provider,
to talk to them about your symptoms,
since this may be a sign
that there's something else going on,
especially if it's accompanied
by leakage of fluid or vaginal bleeding.
