Hello there, and welcome to this fourth episode of Curiosity
in which we'll deal with a phenomena which were the worst nightmare of generations of navigators.
In the wild, one of the world's most powerful phenomena encounterable
is under the form of a liquid wave containing a lot of energy
and which does a lot of damage when it encounter an obstacle :
waves :)
It's a very ambivalent phenomena : it can be as harmless as deadly
You can both play with them on a beach and fear them in the middle of the sea
so it's difficult to sort it.
Generally speaking, waves are forming off the coast, due to the wind blowing the water surface
provoking ripples
Kinda like when you blow on a hot beverage
But in few cases, we have to deal with wave we can qualify of "abnormal"
Due to their height or their birth conditions
(Usually both comes thogether)
In first place, we have the well-known tsunamis and tidal waves, sort of gigantic waves
crashing on the coasts
generally following an earthquake
and moving a monstrous quantity of water
But we also have far less known waves
the tidal bores, which occurs during consequent tides
making a big quantity of water go back up a river
manifesting as a wave
Hopefully, it is often more impressive than dangerous, and it's also very popular among surfers
Well, that is some great stuff, but there is another wave
a third type far more unpredictable and dangerous
that was still considered as a myth only a century ago
So that's going to be today's topic
[Intro music]
(It's already english :p)
If there was one fear you should have on a sea trip
it would be to face gigantic wave in the middle of a storm capable of capsizing you at any time
[Splosh]
For a while, rogue waves have been considered as the product of drunk sailors
been presented as literally water walls (THIS IS HUGE)
that would appear suddenly off the coast, and with a great human cost.
Part of sea legends for centuries,
a lot of testimonies of such waves have been heard
usually held up to ridicule, the survivor beeing seen as drunkard and insane
With time, we have a lot of stories and tales that keep summing up
but despite that, rogue wave are still considered as fictionnal
Among major testimonies, there is the one from Dumont d'Urville
Dumont were a French explorer and navigator from 1800+
At 17, he decided to enlist in marines
and do some small travels, especially in Mediterranean
He will be part of the crew that found the Venus de Milo
(Yeah, that one)
Later, Dumont decide that Mediterranean sea isn't far enough
and decide to launch an expedition to New-Zealand and Antarctica
after which we will tell that he had encountered waves high of several tens of meters
That took his career to an end and he was seen as a fool
[sad react only :,( ]
But there is other stories from different navigators, especially Cristopher Colombus
but it's still not enough in the balance to really believe them
It's only at the beginning of the 20th century that people start to be interested
and to ask questions about the existence - or not - of these waves
especially the Americans who would like to understand why some of their aircraft carriers
have been fold after encountering one of those off the coast
And, well, that is legitimate to start thinking about it.
On January 1st, 1995, we finally been able to prove these waves existence
after one hit a oil rig in North sea
It have been called "New year wave"
We were able to analyse testimonies and data collected on this oil rig
to realize that the wave was 31m tall
(equivalent to a 10 floors building)
that put an end to hesitation about their existence
What make these waves dangerous is that they are unpredictable
but also their amplitude, meaning their real height, and not only relative to sea level
Let's take an example : you're chilling on your boat, and then waves comes to you
You pass them one by one, without difficulties and then you see a wave taller than the others
(let's say 15m)
The boat keep on going, everything is OK, buuut that's a rogue wave.
and so that's not 15m tall at all.
That's because we consider this height form our perspective, here the sea level (altitude 0)
That mean you neglect the hollow before this wave, way under this level
adding about 10m of precipice.
Here, we are dealing with gigantic slopes, as much as 45° according to some stories.
Please note that 45° is a 100% slope !
That's a nice slide ! Followed with a 10m above sea level water wall
that's 25m in total in which the whole boat is going to rush on.
(Yeah, it's going to be damn harsh)
Now that's the result when you're facing the wave. Now imagine when it hit you from the side.
[Supposed noise of Hokusai's wave hitting a 17th century gallion]
What seem obvious with all the testimonies is that they are unpredictable
They can both occur during tempest or during a lull
That seem pretty unlogical at first sight and explain why we didn't believe it for centuries.
There is several hypothesis concerning their birth. Let's talk about the most credible from my point of view
We estimate that during great tempest, the wind can make the waves widen
and going faster and faster. That is, waves would start to gradually catch up with previous ones
Waves then would stack, one ripple after the other, giving birth to a super-wave, as short as tall.
Rogue waves could be the result of the combinations of multiple little waves, giving birth to a giant one.
What you should remember is that rogue wave are gigantic mass of water suddenly occurring off the coast
Thereby, their are extremely dangerous and can surprise ships
Even if nowadays we do not fully understand this phenomena, it is real
and unfortunately, it had several occasion to demonstrate since 1995.
What you should also know is that it remains very rare, and stay located in certain areas in particular
according to some.
If you are going on a cruise, don't panic, you are very unlucky to encounter one of those.
The most impressive still are the damages that can be seen on boats after encountering one of these monsters
testifying of the violence and weight of these waves against the blindage
We can also imagine how much these encounters must have been deadly few centuries ago
when ships where made only on wood
That is why they are called "Rogue waves" (in french "Felon waves")
literally "waves committing crimes"
Thanks for watching until the end, if you enjoyed it, let's share it, like it and subscribe to the channel
For those who are where since the beginning, please tell me what you think of this new emission
(outdated stuff, no need to translate this :p )
(That said, you can help translate other videos ! Any help is appreciated :) )
(Please note this translation were not written by Melvak !)
I am at the end my first year at university so video should be uploaded more often
maybe other projects, in short I will have time to work on videos
Well, not necessary more videos, but more at a more regular rythm
Let's see you in a next video, probably a Curiosity or a Curiocean
So stay tuned and above all, stay curious !
