So, for today's episode, I want to talk a little bit about what we do in our practice,
something that I'm very passionate about, something that I enjoy doing, is implants and bone grafting.
Many questions we've gotten has been, what kind of bone graft materials do you use, and how do you know what to use when?
What are the differences between bone graft materials?
And so, that's actually a very good question, and something that you should ask your dentist
if you're getting a procedure done in terms of different bone graft materials, different membranes,
because there's differences in the bone graft materials.
One is, they come from a certain source, whether it's a human bone, animal bone,
or synthetic material.
And so, how do you know which bone graft material is going to be best for your case?
And how do I decide?
Well, one is, I have the conversation with the patient,
advising them of the procedure that we're going to do, what materials we're using.
And especially when it comes to bone graft materials,
it can come from another human being, it can come from an animal.
And so, those are the two main differences with some of the products that we use in our office.
Human bone products and animal bone products.
Now, there's differences between the two,
and certain people will have a preference.
For example, some of the animal products,
some people will not use animal products because it's against their religions.
Some people cannot use porcine, meaning from pigs.
Some patients cannot use bone from cows, right?
So, depending on your religion, depending on your culture,
will vary and will determine the type of bone graft materials that can be used.
And so, I'll ask that question and say,
is it okay if we use human bone?
Is it okay if we can use animal bone?
And animal bone, there's pig bone, there's horse bone, there's cow bone.
So, many different sources of bone that we can use from animals.
So, what do I use in our practice?
We use human bone.
That's what I think is going to be the best bone to use.
But if some patients, they don't want human bone, we can use animal bone.
And then we'll tell them.
And most patients, if they don't have any religious or cultural differences or preferences,
we can use cow bone, we can use pig bone,
and usually with pretty good similar results.
Now, when you get into the real details of the scientific literature,
you may have minor differences.
But for the most part, if you use animal bone or human bone,
many times we'll get some pretty good results.
The best source is always going to be human bone
because we're very compatible, right?
So, a different human being processing the bone,
it gets sterilized, it gets treated,
it gets made sure it's very clean and sterile,
and we use those human bones.
So, I like using bone products from ZymV.
Well, it used to be called Zimmer BioMed.
Now, they're called ZymV.
They have a long track record,
meaning a long history of using bone products.
And so I've been using this for over 20 years.
And even in human bone, there's differences.
There's large particles, small particles, depending on the case.
So, that's something that your dentist can advise you on.
Human bone or xenograft is animal bone.
So, this comes from either pig, cow, right?
Depending on the preference, depending on the company,
we use certain types of bone products from certain animals.
Now, when it comes to implants, many different companies.
You know, you have all different companies on the market, right?
So, you know, many brands, name brands.
Again, I use ZymV.
This brand, the new implant is a very, very good implant
that we've been using
because it's a little bit more aggressive.
You get very good adherence,
attachment to the bone.
And it's been shown to prove
to be a very, very reliable,
very successful long-term implant.
So, these are just some of the products
we use in our practice.
But your local dentist, you know,
many different types of implants, many bone products.
But certainly you want to ask
what materials are being used
because ultimately it's going to be about
your long-term success and your overall health.
So, thanks for joining us.
