Welcome to my garden in Essex, England in May 2024.
Iโm delighted to take you around and share how my garden is doing at this time of year.
I garden on the South East coast of England in the equivalent of a US Hardiness Zone 8.
So far this year weโve only had a few days of warm weather - itโs mostly been wet and quite cold - but I think we are safe to assume we are now past our average last frost date.
I hope you enjoy my garden tour.

hi everyone it's Janette here
enthusiastic Gardener I've just realized
we are in May and I don't believe I have
filmed a garden tour yet in 2024 so I've
come home from work it's beautiful and
warm it's not raining it's not windy
it's calm it's not noisy and the perfect
opportunity here's my garden in England
May
2024 so I think we'll start at this end
here because this is the most newly
planted end now you have to excuse the
weeds in the courtyard area but here we
are we have a recently planted ground
cover so we have three varieties of th
we have creepy flocks that's another
time and then we have a
Jer over the back there we have this
which is my newly planted as well it's
the chili and potato tree which has just
flowered and as you can see the bees are
enjoying the flowers on the chili and
potato
tree and we have the honeysuckle the lon
s stina something like
that which I've just planted here the
honeysuckle so they'll both go
up the obelisks hopefully and uh if they
join together then so be
it I have here a forum brown sugar which
I've just trimmed away all the old
leaves when I went round weeding I was
kind of trying to tidy up any any old
leaves or anything that needed doing in
this is very pretty it's
ianus and they there are three of them
as you can see and they overwintered
here in my USDA hardiness equivalent to
a Zone 8 so that doesn't really equate
to our summers it's more the mildness of
our
Winters we have down the bottom at the
front these are Hardy uranium I did have
three but as you can see only two seem
to have survived and you'll notice all
my Duff
deals which are these here around the
garden I have actually cut all the
foliage in half now I know you're not
supposed to do that but if you watch Dr
Armitage who's a friend of Jim Putnam
over on H tube he's a wonderful
wonderful lovely lovely man and a
fantastic gardener
he always cuts his foliage in half and
he
says it's been fine and I can't bear
looking at it so that's what I've done
and I did do that last year as
well and they came back fine this here
is my pinus vanderwolf's pyramid which I
planted a year ago now these are really
pretty that's really beautiful that's
the blue
in my garden bed this Rose is called
shne and it's just erupting in the most
beautiful white
flowers absolutely
gorgeous and down the bottom we have the
accus ice
blue that's
called doesn't last long flowers very
early but that's very pretty
we have some dusty
miller the silver foliage is Dusty
Miller this is a
u then I have an apple tree see the buds
there they may well be apples we have
flowers for the first time ever it's
been in for 3 years I planted it
February
2021 which is when I planted all my
fruit
trees as you'll see as we go around
there are other fruit trees as well this
is a sedum
and it's an Autumn joy and I really
should have divided
it it's too late now but I should divide
it next year cuz it is
massive this is my container
garden and it's beautiful the colors
mostly from the hookas so you can see
the hookas here and they've been in a
couple of years these one is
particularly big I do know this one's
called Dark
secret and I have great success with
hookas in my garden here and I always
think if you find something that loves
your garden then just keep planting them
so I'm so fortunate to be able to plant
hookas this here is a Chinese
plumbago that will be beautiful blue
flowers later on and uh usually sort of
end of the Summer and Autumn and then
next to it to the left we we have a
budle that's the Miss Ruby I only
planted this last year last summer so I
haven't actually seen any flowers as yet
so I'm hoping this will be the year that
we might see some flowers on the bulia
Miss Ruby in
fact this looks like
a a little flower there yes we do have
some flower buds quite a few so that's
nice
the blue around the container they are
junipers blue
stars and they'll they'll get even more
Bluer as there's more
sunshine and then around the base we
have lavender and that's doing really
well and I moved that
there last end of last year and it's
overwintered we have a unanimous green
spire that is the plant which is in the
container and then with some
Ivy this is my beautiful try carpus
Fortune ey I planted This I Believe In
The Summer of
2021 so we're coming up to 3 years now
it's done very very well it's withstands
any wind it withstands any cold I do
come out in the snow when we have snow
and I shake the snow from it you can see
some of the frons such as this one at
the back that's yellow in this one's
yellow in a little bit now so when that
happens it's time really to cut cut it
off at the base so I'll probably come in
and I do have special fertilizer just
for this tracky Carper so I must
remember to do
that as we come around this is the uus
which I Cloud pruned or I was trying to
train it it was a straight up Bush as
you can see I had sticks I've taken
those sticks out but I had one left
there so you can see the general idea
was to prize each stem
apart and what I will do I've been
letting it grow a little bit but what I
I need to do is come in and reform the
balls so I'm
hoping that
that looks nice but it's a slow
process Rome was not built in a day as
they say over at the back this is my
blue arrow so it's a juniper blue
arrow next to that we have Salvia it's a
version similar to Hot Lips I can't
remember what it's called but they're
like little
ballerinas a little dancing
girls very pretty and that has
overwintered as well which is
great I'm letting the ivy
grow which comes the other side of the
fence and I am letting it grow but I am
trying to control it what I'm doing is
not letting it grow
horizontally I'm pulling it away so just
hopefully lots of
vertical vertical bits of IV the Mahonia
is beautiful now I've had this Mahonia
it looks absolutely stunning in the
winter all these are bright yellow
flowers and as you can see they turn
into these
berries this time of year a lot of them
have gone now the birds come and eat
them but I'm very very fond of the
Mahonia because it takes no work at all
it just does its own thing very very
spiky though
this is a Nandina and the Nandina is
just stunning color most of the Year
particularly in the Autumn as you can
imagine and then next to that to the
left we have an
osmanthus in this pedestal planter
that's just another uous you will notice
I have a lot of un uous because like
hukas they just do so well this is
another fa
and this has been in a year now it's
called a Fatina pink crispy and you can
just see the last of the pink tinges on
the new leaves the new leaves come out
beautiful and pink which is where it
gets its name but it's a lovely
variegated foliage which I really really
do like
that now this Rose is practically the
only thing thing that has been in my
garden longer than me everything else
I've planted
myself but I have no idea what this Ros
is it's usually very beautiful though a
lovely coral
color so in a couple of weeks time we
should be able to see the flowers on
those roses and I don't spray anything I
used to do my garlic spray and I would
only do the garlic spray if I was doing
anything to control aphids but what I've
decided last year and it worked is that
obviously if you kill all the aphids no
beneficial insects will come to your
garden because there's no food so I
didn't do anything last
year and I saw ladyb birds or
ladybugs so that's what I'm
doing and we have slugs and snils are
plenty this is a patina Red Robin which
is another stunning
plant in the spring so it's bright red
all the new leaves as it
fades as the summer goes
on the aliums are very beautiful these
are all purple
Sensations which I always plant purple
Sensations and you will see that I've
taken all the leaves off all of my
purple
Sensations and I've read quite a bit and
seen a few YouTube videos of people
saying you can do that with aliam
because aliam they're not like tulips or
daffodils they have everything they need
look at that beautiful bee they have all
they need in their
bulbs and I can't bear all the
foliage this here is wonderful lamium
and it's called Purple
Dragon that is spread like Wildfire as
they
say this is a cisserus a
little
topi behind it this one which is going
to be beautiful this
is a David Austin Rose and it's the
Olivia Austin beautiful pink
flowers this here which is getting in
golf let me see if I can just move that
so you can see this is the three ball
toy that I created needs a haircut but I
created that
from uh vanov tusin totem pole Cyprus
which was uh straight up and down and
basically I just cut out the middle and
made little
balls and as we walk around this
way this is erysimum that's been there a
few years I did cut half of it away
actually because it was beginning to
look very straggly but that comes back
well that's there all year it never goes
away next to it on the right this is a
cinus and it's called young lady and I
was given that by my friend Edie she
didn't want it she gave it to me it was
in her garden so this will be the first
year that I've seen what the cus young
lady smoke bush does
this is my pear tree this pear tree
had flowers on it for the first time
it's grown really tall this is about 8
ft tall I think so maybe we will have
peirs I'm not sure to the left of that
is another Rose another David Austin and
that one is called the James L
Austin there's a flocks just in front of
it this is a lemon
Cyprus this is one of my most favorite
things in the garden it is the Pisa pons
Blue Spruce and it's called hoopsy eye
and I don't know if the color comes out
as good on the camera as it does it's
icy blue it's
wonderful and next to it here another
very
beautiful tree which I only planted last
summer it's a forest pansy Red Bud cers
Canada
SES so I'm pleased to say that survived
the winter fine and that's interesting
for me to see what sort of colors come
out on that next to of course we have
one of my favorites a Fier Japonica and
you can see that I like to make my FAS
into tree forms so what I do is I take
off all the leaves down below CU you can
have them big bushy plants and the new
leaves that grow in the spring I just
leave those and these are the new leaves
which grew in the spring it's just that
I think it looks like a little bit more
tropical
architecture this is a nine bark
probably called the lady in
red very very
pretty very pretty
indeed this Rose here here is called Fab
at 60 which I was bought by my friend
Juliet and that will be red red roses
and then to the right of that you can
see one red bud there that one is called
the 40th anniversary ruby
wedding so that's three years ago now
that I had my 40th
so yeah time's flies some more back up
for some more hookas this is the cam IUS
as well more hookas this here is my ASA
Japanese maple called little
princess so that's a look at that whole
bed
there and then we come to Shady
Corner which I named Shady corner now
Shady corner I haven't weeded so you
have to bear with me I've weeded
everything except Shady corner
and of course I need to start again we
have a lot of uous different
varieties I'm going to go in and shap
them
all so the green ones seem to be growing
the quickest as you can see they're the
tallest and the the little variegated
ones next to it they're quite short so I
might come in and just take the tops off
everything I'll keep the sides I won't
prune the sides cuz then they'll get
bushier
but I might just take off the
tops but the idea
was to form a little pathway I did used
to have boxwoods but we got hit with the
Box tree moth and the Box tree
caterpillar and I lost them all you
can't see so much at the moment because
the bruners are going
wild so they are um overhanging all my
little uous pathway
which goes up
here and I'll probably what I'll do very
soon now you can see most of the BR
flowers are all falling off they will
form seeds if you let them
drop but if you tidy them up the way to
do it is go back to this is the
flowering stem take that all the way
down cut it right down into the bottom
of the plant then you're left with these
and these are lovely slugs and snils do
not like them because they're all
furry so I'll come in and tidy those up
but they have been it's been so pretty
and frothy as you can
see the
ferns are doing amazingly
well I did cut off all the old frons and
we were left with the tiny
little new new ones and they've all
unfilled they are very very happy here
I'm pleased to
say and this
pathway leads to my garden illusion gate
I get lots of people asking me for links
so you can see it's a
mirror a rather dirty mirror
actually
but that's all it is is a mirror and
it's the way that the wood is cut gives
the illusion of the open
door and this is a dark Shady corner of
my garden and I just think it adds a
little pop of
Interest we have a flower on the road to
denden I think we're only having one
this
year yeah some years is successful oh we
have another bud so I think we'll have
two flowers this year I wait all year to
see what's happening with the roaded
dendron this year's quite disappointing
but that is another toy that I've made
need to TI it up it's uh another
uous another uous
there this here is my apple tree not
particularly doing very well with
curling
leaves in fact
I think I need to take this out but what
I want to do at the moment it's just a
good good uh bit of structure for this
area but what I do need to do is find a
tree that likes the shade is happy to
stay in the
shade this is what Richard
affectionately calls the stick because
most of the year it that is literally
what it is that stick there and then
it's it's called an aalia
alata it probably would do so much more
if it was in some
sunshine but I'm quite fond of
it we've had bleeding hearts they have
uh now finished and they will
disappear what else do we have we
have so that shady
corner and this is a hyd ranger vanilla
phase
as we pan around you can see I have H
crocosmia and they are the orange
crocosmia some more hookas
here and lung wart just finishing I need
to the bees have loved this
but I need to cut those off now and then
I'll be left with these
leaves just have some carots there they
need to be tiedy
up in fact I'm not so
sure this is long for Life anyway so
that's that we've seen all
this we've seen all this let's go around
this way more
hookas this is a
geranium and that is a gerani u sorry a
hranger a mop head no it's not a mop
head it's a
macrophilia the lace cap ones the lace
caps this here is my ilex
konata cloud pruned
towy this here is an Alber
Spruce we have some more depil cut
down another Sedum neon Joy this
one the tall plant there is another
uous what I think I'll do is dig up all
my
daffodils because what I've noticed is
all the daffodil seem to be in one big
Clump around the area we're just coming
to on the right and uh nowhere else so I
think I'll dig all the daffodil up and I
might put them all in one big pot mix
them all up and randomly replant them
and that will be
fun so here we have another
cerus this is my cherry tree and you can
see we have loads of
cherries it does do well and I do eat
the cherries let's just see more
cherries see there's lots lots of
cherries and I I'm sure that tree was
quite small when I planted it I think it
was smaller than and the
yamus and it's grown so
big let's go around this way um another
neon neon Joy
seeden some Carr just over
there we have another lemon
Cyprus another
geranium this has gone a little wild
needs a trim it's a Victoria
Plum and you can see I have lots of
plums lots of plums very happy this um
year I did cut away a big branch which
was growing in the middle so hopefully I
thought that it would be more Airy
inside and I think it's helped but yeah
that's gone a little crazy
this is quite new this was from Easter
time I love it it's my Harley Quinn
braided
Willow it's so
pretty I just love it now I do get the
only thing you need to do you'll see
here you get little bits growing so you
just have to come along and rub them off
just every now and then just a quick
little job
otherwise of course it'll all start
growing from there and you're supposed
to be exposing the
beauty love that aliens are
delightful and then this is a Bay
Tree which always grows all these
suckers in America I believe there's
bony and they have Sucker Punch well
I've looked there's nothing like that
over
here this is a lily this be a white
lily this here is veronic
ason which does look lovely I meant to
divide that this spring and time got
away with me and I didn't divide it but
I do need to Stak get my steaks the same
as this Salvia here need to get my
steaks quickly before they start
flopping and these will be all purple
flowers as well and then here we have
another blue spruce which is called uh
Pia Pon super blue
seedling and look how beautiful all the
new growth
is isn't that
delightful so basically that they're
very very slow grow they will grow big
eventually but very very slow that's
that's what it will do in one year you
can see the new growth which is like
about 2 in at
most this is a Nandina
another pretty Nandina and we have
another
hooka so that's the main Garden we just
walk over here I did sew some
zenas last well a week ago it's supposed
to take seven to 10 days this is just a
rose that I severely
[Music]
pruned so at least it is alive but but I
sewed some
zenas a week
ago and they're just germina if you
look that's exciting and I sewed some in
the other
pot just
here and
yeah they're
germinating tiny
little plants are
appearing or are they weeds
these are the Ivy waths I
made at Easter time and they're doing
very well they're just made out of coat
hangers I copied it from Laura at Garden
answer looks so easy I made one for
Mom now let's just finish off over here
we have a walnut tree
here that's my walnut tree it's not a
black walnut but even so they're
quite harmful they can be harmful to
other things in your garden particularly
fruit tree so I just never wanted to
plant it directly into my
garden we have a pedestal here with my
only hosters because the snugs and
snails eat the hosters and you can see
they found these ones as well I found
two snails on there this morning it's
been so wet so they went over the fence
I have to
say and this is a clst
Justa and it's just
beginning to flower that's very pretty
and that's surprisingly does well
considering it's always in the shade
there's no sun here and i' it's been in
here since I think I planted it in
2020 down there is my compost
which is uh going quite well I do think
that I will upgrade and get some actual
proper compost bins but I'm just
measuring measuring and trying to find
the right size at the right
price now I want to introduce you to
Lancelot Lancelot has been named by my
lovely friend Bron
bronwin she lives in Sydney Australia
and she always comments on my video
videos we always chat and she named him
for me lelot because she said he's got a
coat of armor as Sir lelot would have
had in the Medieval Nights of the Round
Table
stories and he guards Woodland Courtyard
which is this area here so he is
befitting of Sir
lelot so I love that thank you Brun
let's head into Woodland Courtyard one
of my most favorite areas and it's just
filled with a lot a lot of stuff but
it's given me such pleasure it's filled
with ferns from my friend Mark border
sent me all these
cuttings and we just have a lot of
Whimsy it's just my little magical
Woodland Co
yard as you can see we have lots of bits
and pieces we have little birds we have
hookas we have
ferns we have
lamium
it's it gives me a lot of fun I have to
say and we have uh some nice things
inside my Victoria in wall
tall Greenhouse which is more of a Cold
Frame
really but I like it it FS this space
it's it's all I could have in this small
garden we have more
fans and I lined all my
baskets with artificial
grass so that's what what they're lined
with this is the basket that I
planted Richard and I both planted a
basket each this is the one he
planted as you can see his one had the
fire alarm
HRA yes so we have more ferns
these are in the pots hanging on
the hanging ra which is actually a
radiator turned on its side we used to
have this Radiator in our kitchen
and well it broke basically so we have a
mixture of CarX and an
enemies which Mark bord and my friend
sent me and they're doing very well very
well indeed sent me little cuttings
and it's just a collection that was a
piece of fatsia that I pulled off one of
my big ones I thought I'd see if it
Roots more Whimsy and little birds and
dragon flies and wooden
mushrooms hanging
plants we're nearly at the end now
more hanging plants it's very uh quite
Shady around here this is my lovely new
Japanese maple which is a blood
good so we I've put it in here for the
time being this wall does get about 3 or
4 hours of
sunshine in in a
day and then I have in my little bird
planter that's some basil which smells
lovely because I thought if I sit on my
seat in Woodland Courtyard it would be
nice to smell that and this is some
mint which is um Apple mint this plant
here I have no idea no idea what that
is lot's
uh she's getting bored she wants me to
go in we have hookas
here uh fattier spiders web now I didn't
realize I think it's a little bit too
hot which is a shame
most of the leaves are
okay
so I'll pull off these ones the answer
are good and then I'm sure it'll
rebound and one more
planter my little
pixie so that's Woodland
Courtyard and we've done a full
circle full circle of the garden
in
May it's been quite
wet so
far but I hope you've enjoyed my garden
tour as I say we should have table and
chairs which I'm so excited about very
soon well I hope you enjoyed my garden
tour for May 20 24 we have next week I'm
hoping that the chairs will all be
finished and we'll have a beautiful
table and chairs to show you uh we're
kind of halfway there
but that's something to look forward to
and I am very excited so thank you so
much for watching I'm Janette I'm the
enthusiastic Gardener take care everyone
have a great week and I'll see you next
week thanks for watching bye
