Justice Department Celebrates 60th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964
Tuesday July 9
AG Garland: “As we continue to enforce the provisions of the Civil Rights Act
of 1964, we are using every authority we have to protect civil rights.
We are doing everything in our power to defend reproductive rights protected
by federal law. We are using every authority we have to protect the right to vote.
We are aggressively disrupting, investigating, and prosecuting the hate crimes
that victimize individuals and terrorize entire communities.
And we are bringing the perpetrators of those crimes to justice.
We are using the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other authorities to protect the rights of
LGBTQ Americans to live free from discrimination, harassment, and violence.
And we are prosecuting threats of violence that target the public servants
who administer our elections and who ensure the functioning of our democracy.
AAG Clarke: Sixty years ago, in the Civil Rights Act of 1964,
this nation laid the cornerstone for our subsequent progress toward equal justice.
It may be difficult today to appreciate the strength and courage required to bring about
this change because we know how the story ended.
The civil rights proponents in the 1960s did not.
Confident in the justice of their cause — but not its success
— they advocated and protested, they suffered beatings and imprisonment
and some died.

“The Justice Department has no tolerance for violent threats against
election workers, officials, and volunteers, and as this case demonstrates,
we will aggressively investigate and prosecute such threats to the fullest extent
of the law. We will continue to defend the right to vote and to defend the safety
of the public servants who make voting possible.”

Justice Department Leads Efforts Among Federal, International,
and Private Sector Partners to Disrupt Covert Russian Government-Operated
Social Media Bot Farm - Tuesday, July 9
“Today’s action demonstrates that the Justice Department and our partners will not
tolerate Russian government actors and their agents deploying AI to sow
disinformation and fuel division among Americans.
As malign actors accelerate their criminal misuse of AI, the Justice Department will
respond and we will prioritize disruptive actions with our international partners and
the private sector. We will not hesitate to shut down bot farms, seize illegally obtained
internet domains, and take the fight to our adversaries.”
-Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco
