migrants just getting to Massachusetts
are finding themselves stranded on the
streets of Boston many newly arrived
migrants are being denied shelter just
days before the State's new 5-day limit
on overflow shelter sites takes effect
Boston 25 news reporter Drew Kus live at
BMC where Drew the hospital's been
booking ride shares for migrants who
show up
there krie Boston Medical Center has
been telling migrants that they can't
sleep in the emergency department since
last year but families continue to show
up here some have been seen sleeping on
these benches outside the hospital
others sent away in ride shars without
clear Direction on where to go
next these images show newly arrived
migrant families in Massachusetts with
suitcases hunkered down outside Boston
Medical Center looking for a place to
sleep the hospital says all families who
arrive homeless are assessed before
migrants are frequently sent on their
way in ride shares Advocates say this is
one of the locations they're often sent
to the Brazilian Worker Center in Austin
but when families arrive here after
hours the center is closed resulting in
some families staying outside overnight
they're already at a disadvantage and
we're putting them at even more so Alec
gelle who works at the mindful Mud Dog
Daycare Center next door has seen
families sleeping outside it's really
rigged against them um they don't have a
place to go and the places that are
taking them are now limiting them many
of the new migrant families just now
arriving in Massachusetts are being
denied shelter with the state's
emergency shelter system full and
overflow sites at capacity the state
will officially begin shrinking the
number of nights they can stay in
overflow shelters to five on Thursday
but the reason I implemented that policy
is because we've got 8,000 families in
shelter right now and we don't have an
unlimited checkpoint or unlimited
capacity and so many migrants who can no
longer spend the night inside Logan
airport are now finding themselves in
limbo stranded on the streets of Boston
a Boston Medical Center spokesperson
tells us that the hospital does not have
the capacity or resources to provide
shelter to unhoused families a statement
says quote if they do not require
medical care we will continue to arrange
transportation to State resources and
after hours to friends family and
Community Resources where they may find
shelter until State offices reopen
and a BMC spokesperson points out that
the hospital has consistently advocated
for resources that would be open 24
hours a day 7 days a week we should also
mention that the new budget just signed
by Governor Healey today includes 326
million for the state's ongoing shelter
response we're live outside Boston
