In this video I'm taking you on our family backpacking trip with my 3 year old, 17 month old, and dog!
Hey, welcome back to my channel.
Today, we are taking the kids backpacking.
So I'm going to show you what that kind of looks like from start to finish.
We made it to the trailhead, so we're just going to unload everything
and get on the trail. It's nice and sunny today.
Getting our packs on.
Got Jean in the trail magic.
We're on the trail.
We're already taking a little break, which is fine.
We are not going very far up.
So originally we were going to do a new trail,
but my friend wasn't able to make it.
So we're just back at a spot we've been to before.
It's beautiful. Can't complain.
So let's see.
I'll show you guys what a little man is carrying.
Hey, buddy, what do you got?
OK, a big stick.
He found his four wheeler and in his fanny pack are a bunch of cars.
Little sister brought her baby.
Is that your baby?
Baby.
OK, this is my setup.
I just have my pack and I got someone on a leash.
So I'm actually doing pretty good.
I feel very light.
All right.
We have been scouting out campsites and I think we found our spot.
It's different than where we slept last time,
but it's looking flatter, more cleared out.
So all good things.
So we're going to set up our tent now.
We are by this little creek, which you should be camped away
100 feet from water, but this little creek was OK to camp by.
The main river is over there.
So the little kids are having fun splashing in it.
We're looking for our sleeping bags and sleeping pads that are at the bottom.
If you don't want to dig through your stuff, then the bottom zipper
in the tent, I'm throwing in our sleeping clothes, sleeping bags.
I'm pulling out the magnets already.
Kirk asked for them.
So here you go.
And here's the yo-yo player.
Here's a couple of bag liners and a pillow.
Another sleeping pad.
Last sleeping bag,
a couple more pads and another pillow.
Now I'm going to assign my toddler to pull the sleeping bags out.
Hey, buddy, can you take all the sleeping bags out of their bags?
OK, let me loosen it for you so it doesn't rip.
I did it.
Yay! This one?
Come here!
Come here, sleepyhead.
So this is our double sleeping pad, and it's got a bag to inflate it.
I think the last time I did this, I don't know if I snapped it in the middle.
These are pillows, actually.
But they don't look like it.
Blow them up like that.
Easy, lightweight, safe, lost space.
Fortunately, we only brought two pillows.
Jean won't use one, so that means I'm stuffing
one of these with some sort of clothing or whatever.
That's my pillow.
So if you're ever in a pinch and you forget,
use like your tent bag that you can like shove.
Maybe a coat that you're not wearing.
Put it in there.
Still works out pretty good.
Jean's not making this easy.
Jean!
All right, everybody make some room.
Getting cool, so we're putting the kids' jackets on.
For Jean, she's got a bunting.
And getting them some snacks.
What car do you play with?
Named Dumbo.
So far, we've lucked out with good weather.
I mean, you can't I don't know if you can tell.
It's blue skies above us currently, but we got some dark clouds rolling in.
So Logan's throwing on the rain fly right now.
We'll just be ready in case it starts to rain on us.
We'll just get in our tent.
That's why we brought some fun things like the magnetic cubes and the Yoto player.
And it's already what time is it?
It's already 830.
So the kids are hopefully going to be tired soon anyway.
It is starting to sprinkle on us.
So we put the kids in the tent.
They're getting a little grumpy.
But Logan and I are just grabbing everything and putting it under the vestibule.
And then we might be in the tent for the rest of the night.
We're in the tent.
Krook is eating cookies, which I normally would never do inside our tent.
I'm actually a little afraid we're going to get some critters in here.
But fingers crossed that doesn't happen.
Got a little sister listening to the Yoto player.
The queen of hearts had an army of cards at her beck and call.
Kids woke up.
Well, that's the way to go.
We've been up for like 40 minutes now.
Yeah, it's going to
take the rain fly off. Lots of dew.
Starting to stuff our sleeping bags this morning.
Logan's going to make oatmeal for breakfast.
Kids did OK last night.
I mean, Kirk, I think slept really good.
Did he wake up that much?
I think he might have woken up once, just sat up.
Uh-huh.
She woke up a couple of times, and so I just nursed her.
Hey, Kirky, what you doing, buddy?
There's a little rain suit, and those are his waterproof shoes.
Help me with the oatmeal.
I need you to hold the spoon for me.
Hold the spoon for me, OK?
I'm going to pour this in.
Is this the right amount?
Should be, yep.
OK, mix it.
OK, so we're making oatmeal for breakfast, and in here
I just have some old fashioned notes, chia seeds, brown sugar
and a pinch of salt.
And then I we just added boiling water to it and we're letting it cook.
So I love these silicone bags because you can just make it right in here.
So without fail, I almost always forget enough backpacking spoons for all of us.
I don't know why.
And this trip, I forgot all of them.
So we stopped at Harman's.
And where did you get the spoon?
Near the sushi area.
Yeah, they have a sushi area.
So we just grabbed a couple.
So kids have been eating oatmeal.
Logan's finishing it off.
And I'm not really that hungry.
So I'll probably eat like a granola bar or something.
We're having a lazy morning.
Going to pack up soon and head out.
I hope it doesn't rain. It's pretty cloudy.
OK, we're going to filter some water.
I'm using the Katadyn Bee Free.
Normally I use the Sawyer, but this is what I have.
It helps if you can get like where the water is moving quicker.
Right there.
Hayley's probably already showed you, but we distribute the weight evenly.
Big stuff at the bottom, sleeping stuff at the bottom,
and then just trying to fill in the gaps.
Just kind of work it evenly so it kind of all squishes and gets all compact.
All right, I think we're all pretty much packed up and ready to go.
Just going to put Jean in the carrier.
Got the hike out.
Hiking out.
Logan got Jean on.
We got someone on a leash.
We got Kirk as our leader.
Jean!
She's got her hood on because it started to rain a little bit.
She's got her baby.
We made it back to the car.
Are you ready to go home?
That's the end of today's video, and we are going to load up
and probably go get some food and go home.
Anyway, thanks, you guys, so much for watching.
