this is tantamount to why we always say
you never know what's up those forgotten
roads or old canyons
we have found
this
pretty remarkable so the only thing i
know about this place is
it was an old miner's cabin back in the
day right
um
we're not going to give out the location
of this
for obvious reasons yeah
because this looks to be
in great shape
what to look at first
i've noticed there's also a cross on the
top of the hill so maybe a
grave want to do the bus bus first
now
that's kind of a sizable vehicle to be
bringing all the way up here
i mean even when the road was maintained
back then it is tight quarters
oh and it's a shame that there's so
many bullet holes
completely gutted inside
see there was a stove
so i'm wondering if this was
like a schooly bus
yeah
back in the day the stove
seats
this is really cool
this is
so shamed so much if it's been gutted
i know it's got a cool and the rust
looks really neat the way that
you know nature's done that the bullet
holes are and you've got a bench there
for people to sit
this is really neat
okay shall we see what that cross is
yeah okay
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
so on our way up to check out the cross
there's this wire
around the boulder
it's going to be kind of hard to make
out but it does make its way
up the mountain a little ways
if i can pull it right in the center of
your screen
that rock right there looks like it's a
a seat
the other end just goes there
so what would that be for
please let us know here we are we've
made it up to the cross
don't know the uh significance it's not
a doesn't appear to be a grave marker
or maybe ashes
could be
strange though isn't it curious
it is
but
it does have a very nice view
over the valley
behind the cross is a old water
container it's been sitting here for a
while
it's empty it's hollow we can tell by
the
the knocks on it
[Music]
nothing in there
you can see the cross in the distance
and just
right there you can kind of see the
outline of rocks
it's flattened out so it does appear
that there was some sort of small
structure there at one point and now for
the cabin this looks to be quite new
yeah the outside is in very good shape
so the volunteers have done really
really well looking after this one
i'll let you go in first
oh wow look at that just a single room
it almost reminds me of like a garage a
shed just with the
the way it's been built yeah the little
man cave area she got a kitchen sink
which is a bit disgusting
uh
you have to
fill that
close the lid and replace the wood piece
to keep the mice out
so that's for the water
nice i'm not going to open it
and then
mouse proof lock this door inside first
oh it looks like a mouse he has got in
there's a little bit of stuff in there
yeah a couple of cans of food
water jug cups some cutlery
enough to get you through for a meal
oh yeah i mean if you were stranded for
a couple of days
okay and then a nice
wood burning stove
and as you can see the floor is
has been recently swept it's uh
really clean
dare i open the bread bin yeah
oh my gosh oh there's a lot of that
i knew there must be a log book here
somewhere
not the newest one
looks like it oh no 2021.
2022 here we go
he spent the night set to
traps he got the mouse
good on ya
right
okay and no trip would be complete
without a trip
to the loo hey that's my line oh
i didn't see you standing there
is it usable
well
i think what people have done is they do
their poo poops and then they just
shovel over the top so it's not like a
it's fine it's totally clean
huh
[Music]
yeah so this cabin was built in the
1930s
by a miner who had a claim nearby and
it's right by a spring
okay and today it's used by the park
service it's always fully stocked and by
campers who want to spend the night
but they do have to fly the flag so when
the flag is flying it means that
somebody is in residence
right that's the golden rule of these
because people don't always give out the
location but to know that somebody is
here
you fly the flag to know it's occupied
off to the next cabin yeah
if there is one
if not then you got to sleep outside man
this one's pretty neat this one is
pretty much rodent proof although i have
seen a couple of holes
yeah look there is a sign here they do
have a rock
over the sink it says mice will enter
through the drain so please keep it
plugged yeah and then when you've stayed
in the cabin obviously you you keep it
cleaner than when you found it so sweep
it if you've had a fire clean the fire
out and also leave some food behind
non-perishable foods you've got loads of
tins oh yeah and there's also a box here
which is mouse proof
and it's got lots of packaged stuff
beans and
coffee and crackers our favorite type
ramen
so
so a pinch if you were stranded it would
save your life absolutely and again this
is just
you know i love the upkeep i love uh
love the service the volunteers are
performing here and can you imagine
living out here right out in the middle
of nowhere back in the 1930s pretty
desolate so they didn't have the mobile
phones or tv or anything out here
yesterday let's face it we still don't
have phones out here exactly
exactly nice chairs and table though
look at this
solid
okay
that about does it huh
this
looks like it's going to be quite the
cabin to explore
this is another one of those little gems
out in the middle of nowhere
that we're not going to disclose the
location due to continuous vandalism and
we've been asked to keep this location a
secret
so although i do know the history about
this place the only thing i'm going to
say is
it is a minus cabin and it dates back
the area dates back
to the late 1800s
and the early 1900s
let's take a look
[Applause]
oh yeah
nice solid floors there's a couple bunks
a desk
and there is a um
there's quite a heartfelt letter that
was written in here by those that are
coming up to take care of this cabin
and uh
they do
ask very very kindly as well anybody
that comes up here enjoys this and posts
it on social media just please don't
give out the location or the gps
yeah we've been very very careful not to
film the surrounding areas as well the
the hills because we don't want to give
out the location at all yeah and it is
unfortunate that we have to do that
because
some people out there just you know
choose to destroy things that don't
belong to them and they have no reason
or right to
or steal artifacts
yes that's another one
that's dirt floor so this cabin looks
like it's been built on and built on and
built on so the original cabin
i would say was a single cabin
and then it's had additions built on
now i don't know whether or not mice
might be in here
hair off to the
up
over
it looks like mice have got in there
yeah toilet papers are chewed up yeah
because they're slippery little suckers
and they can get in any tiny hole as we
know
that's neat
canned corn
that looks like it's been up here for 18
hours i like the pork tin too
yeah there's a little bit of rat poop
yeah there is in there
and also
you see here on the table
these rolled
newspaper that they've
stapled down to the the countertop here
that's cool
can you oh there might be a date on this
one
i don't know
i can't see that because of the night to
really get back in there how do you
stick my head back up in there it's
april of 1964
which is gonna be i can't fit the camera
back in there so sorry
and people have picked up bits of
crockery and put that down
okay what is
that's just in
i should know
don't know what that is actually
it looks like a kind of sun kind of like
a warmer one of those warmers
that you put coals in
okay
and then uh
that's pretty much it in there
[Music]
i wrestle the kitchen here the pots and
pans hanging from the
ceiling one of each and the kettle
and the fridge
do not store perishables in here
oh wow but if you've got
people have been leaving water and
snacks
and a uh a drill battery well
well you never know yeah
nice that's pretty stocked
and over here we got uh
well those cans have been out here for a
little bit
they've actually uh all kind of exploded
in the heat
so some baked beans some tools to help
repair
which is nice
nice touch and the rest of the kitchen
there
now with these volunteer cabins you cut
you are welcome to stay here and what
what you do is
you fly the flag and that notifies
people that the cabin is occupied and
then when you leave you take down the
flag and fold it up
now when we came the flag
was all in a mess so stephen
very kindly
folded it up correctly unfortunately
it's in better days
this fireplace is amazing it's the
detail on the sides is so intricate it's
unreal
and a family owned this for quite some
time and they still come up here to
maintain it
which is why they ask
to keep it
a secret
and then the little kitchen area
so again i look it looks like this was
an add-on
yeah definitely
but i mean if you were stranded out in
the middle of nowhere and
the blazing heat or if you got caught in
a
storm it could save your life oh
absolutely i mean it's pretty warm today
i think it's 80.
so uh
it feels a lot better in here out of the
out of the sun
lots of different books to read a little
bit of patricia cornwell
um
some north america books
i've got a bit of everything here really
puzzles
flora and fauna
gerald daryl
you'll notice the cassettes
there is a cassette
player on the table you may have noticed
with some batteries
i wonder if that still works
now gerald durrell
he i believe
owned the zoo
in jersey which is part of the channel
islands
just off the united kingdom between
the uk and france
gerald durrell here we are
it's uh
upside down
hiding behind a bush
but
what is it
can't really uh
find any distinguishing features
the bonnets over here
okay that's right side up
missing the emblem
very neat car
it's actually i mean
minus the bullet holes the body's fairly
straight i mean it's
in better condition than you would think
for it being upside down
way out in the middle of nowhere
[Music]
you
