hello everyone it is steven and andrea
from pin in the atlas
and what an incredible location
we have found today and
somebody very famous
once stayed here yeah we're going to
explore
the double d dude ranch now
unfortunately the
actual ranch house itself is
under renovation by the forestry service
but there are some other buildings that
we can explore
and we can take a look at the ranch
let's take a look so this is the double
d
dude ranch and this was built in the
early 1930s
carl dunword who built this ranch
actually bought pretty much the whole
area
including cohen
hmm now one of
carl's first guests was
amelia earhart and her husband george
oh wow and then i'll
just show real quickly
does not stay private property no
trespassing
it just says it is the property of the
united states
all persons are prohibited under penalty
of law
from committing damage or theft
yes it was uh donated to the
forest service in 1992
and i believe well i was told that they
have been
renovating it so last year they were
they did have builders up here it's
pretty neat
it is incredible i would love to be able
to get inside of it well hopefully
what they're doing the renovations they
will allow
people to go inside i'm walking around
looks there's other buildings back over
here too
the fireplace they've even capped it to
stop the birds and stuff getting in
yeah you can see they're redoing the
mortar between the the logs here
now somebody just told us what that was
and uh it's escaping me at this point
what the way they've done the logs the
actual name
when they're putting the the mortar in
there
because i remember commenting it makes
saying it makes me smile
but now i forget what the term is this
is another little entrance
just looking to see if there's any dates
carved in anything
i don't see any
got a little door up there so if there
would have been a porch back here at one
point
and this is the garage
and there's a hole in the wood so let's
see if we can take a sneak peek
i got modern uh building supplies bunch
of bags of quick crete
so here is a small cabin with the door
open
there aren't any signs we've walked
around the exterior
see if we can peek in real quick
[Applause]
so this must be what they're gonna be
doing to the main ranch
just kind of making it safe enough for a
decent display
to come in and enjoy it
see these are all brand new uh
two by fours and one by on the roof
and nice little wasps nest
and there are a few others we can
explore as well
here's the next one in line this one
still has windows in it
where they have redone the windows
looks like this is where the stove used
to
and be the vent pipe straight above it
and this old sink
there aren't not plumbed or anything
there are quite a lot of wrap droppings
so that would have been where the bath
was i would have thought
would you ah that's kind of weird
should we go anti-clockwise
yeah i like the uh
how they've done these doors this is a
really quiet little cabin
it is that's neat
[Applause]
oh here we go there's another sink with
some plumbing in it
it's a basin the basin
pardon me basin is for bathrooms
sinks are for kitchens so we make you
think that this would be the bathroom
yeah and maybe that one that we first
entered
was the kitchen
some kind of a nest up in there
and then back through
again i like the the way they've done
the woodwork in here
really neat now door's missing out of
this one
all right let's go to the next one
and this is the cabin we were just in
wanted to show how they balanced it
on these rocks
it's kind of sketchy this appears to be
the last little cabin
on this section
no steps there
this is cute oh i wonder if they had
55 gallon drum
[Applause]
this is i really like the way that
they're
fixing these up
and what's in here just a tiny little
yeah tiny little room
just trying to see where the stove pipe
would be
but it doesn't appear to be one
unless they've uh blocked it well we've
covered it back in
because you can see how they've done it
they've got
between the uh the cracks of the boards
there it's particle board on the top
and then they've just taken these logs
and
cut them down makes it look
pretty authentic pretty neat
then here it appears we have found a
swimming pool
so it makes you wonder if this was uh
here when a amelia earhart was here i
wonder if she used to swim in this
that would be pretty neat interesting it
also makes you wonder if any of those
cabins that we walk through if one of
those was one that she
stayed in that they've you know fixed up
or whether or not she stayed in the main
ranch
i would imagine she stayed in the main
ranch yeah
seeing as she was carl's first guest
now this one looks pretty neat
overlooking the
the river you can hear in the background
again there's windows in this one
[Applause]
this one's got a fireplace stone
fireplace
isn't that quite
that's very cool and this little bench
it's kind of like that other one that
was in the uh the second cabin we went
to
so i wonder if that was for wood
could have been for wood or could be
like a window seat with storage
underneath
how cute is this
yeah this one's really neat floorboards
are nice and sturdy
see a lot of the light bleeding through
the roof there and some of the walls
so don't think they've actually fixed
this one up yet
well all the boards on the roof are new
brand new
[Music]
but i don't think they've completed the
other side because as you can see
there's no light bleeding through here
so this one's still a work in progress
it's nice that they're doing it up there
it is
and no explore would be complete without
a trip to the loo
i wonder if amelia earhart used this
single seater
yeah again looks like modern materials
to fix it up you see a little moon shape
to that the lighting
and then this looks like the last little
cabin
we can explore on this property
so coming inside oh i like that
those shelves there
that's pretty neat see they've got
roofing material along the back there
so this is the original fireplace
it looks like it because it oh sure
they've got
kind of blocked it in here but i would i
would think that that probably was
a fireplace and this i would imagine was
the bedroom
it's got a little wardrobe
yep and
[Music]
kind of ensuite oh really
well there's a basin in there but you
can see a hole in the floor
where they look like some sort of
plumbing
that or not that's fallen through
[Laughter]
it's cute it is and i also like how it's
uh
you like these handles made of wood yeah
that just the natural
natural look and how this is open it's
separated but it's also
open you know
making our way up to amelia earhart's
cabin or the remains of i should say
we've come across these two buildings
and of course it might be a little bit
early
but no explore would be complete without
a trip to the outhouse
let's take a look so what were these of
this is to do with the tumblin mine
they were mining silver and gold up here
nice and yeah this one's in
pretty pretty bad shape
but still standing
cool so instead of being out in the
desert where we gotta check for snakes
before we start filming
up here we gotta be on the weary of
bears
and grizzly bears with that bears yes so
we are armed with bear spray
we're making lots of noise yep and just
double checking everything before we
film so like this little cabin here
take a sneak peek inside
and it's just a large room now
that's quite a different hoist house
than what we're
accustomed to seeing but still
absolutely beautiful
so william kerwin discovered
low quality gold and silver in the area
in 1885
but the town of kerwin grew
in 1897 and that was when the first lot
of ore
was transported out by mule
and that is the worthington boiler
that's a big piece of machinery
and then like we always say i mean you
know this this isn't light it did come
up in pieces and was put together
but still bringing that up this because
we're over 9000 feet
yeah 9 300 i believe
let's take a peek inside take a gander
you can feel the weight in these doors
very cool i mean these were like
you know the uh
[Music]
the mechanisms of the day
let's take a look around the front
and i can see that looks like the roof
is
sitting a bit funny hello
so here's the hoist and the uh the mine
shaft
which is filled in
and then this is a great view now the
worthington boiler
patented in april 1890
august 1894 and august
first 199 is that no 1894 again
interesting
people have put firewood in there
okay richard we've got one for you so
you've got this part right here
the piping so there's one piece
and then this here as well
assuming it had something to do with the
boiler
because there's a pipe
running off that direction towards it
so then you've got the old cable down
here as well
yeah the leftover cable from the hoist
which we'll come over and look up
that's a view it's really pretty isn't
it
it is i think it's one of the prettiest
hoists we've seen
so we've just come out that door show
you
the ore chute see it's got a trap door
right there they could close obviously
when they're
hoisting themselves up and out of the
mine
still just absolutely beautiful i love
to look at this
so besides stomping our feet making a
lot of noise singing to keep the bears
away the bears away the bears away this
is what happens we're singing to keep
the bears away so they don't eat us for
tea
or lunch or dinner for a snack
we're singing to keep the bears away
don't have to stop we're seeking to keep
the bags away
so they don't eat us for tea this looks
like it was a pretty nice cabin
so i wonder how many people think that
this one's uh amelia's
yeah but amelia's is another half a mile
up the trail
i wonder who lived here though next you
can see here
there was cabinets
on this side it was pretty pretty large
size i'm gonna say it goes back there's
almost less a second room there
and it also looks like there's a
something else behind very strange
let's keep going we have made the long
hike from that direction
and just look at these majestic
mountains
you can hear the stream flowing in the
background
this is a very beautiful spot
and it was going to be the spot
that one amelia earhart
wanted to grow old in
but unfortunately you know the story
the theories and the mystery
behind her disappearance and thus
the small cabin here was never completed
so amelia came and visited the
double d ranch back in 1934
and fell in love with the area it was a
couple of years later that she contacted
carl
and said that she really wanted to have
a cabin built
this was the start of the cabin
and as you mentioned in 1937
port amelia disappeared
and work on the cabin ceased
it's kind of uh sad they didn't
finish it as a a tribute to her
it'd have been i'm sure a very popular
thing to see
i think just still kind of make out the
outlines of where
the footprint this cabin would have had
yeah the trees have
grown on right these these trees here
along the front
so it was uh four timbers high
yeah and we've entered
i guess with by the front door the front
drawer yeah
pretty amazing piece of history though
it is it's quite um
i'm really happy we made it up here and
uh
amelia wherever you are if you are here
with us
i hope you are resting in peace and your
memory will live on forever
so if you decide to make the journey up
here you can uh and you're on horseback
you can tie your horse up right here
then of course as you see in the
background there were two other
structures
on the property that the forest service
still uses
but you can also kind of date them
look at the door mechanism it's pretty
neat
and lift this one oh it doesn't lift any
higher i don't know whether or not if
you can put the camera right up against
it you might be able to see inside
i know i can see curtains with the
metal screen it's a little difficult
oops i peed through this peephole here
and i could see curtains
let's place this up so that was a little
cabin
and there's another one right here which
again it's locked up
you see the bathtubs yeah the washing
tubs out here
oh oh guess what i've discovered
yeah it is it's another lou
we're hitting the mother lode today
let's take a look
now can you imagine having to go to the
loo in the snow
and having to come down these rocks i
mean
you'd be slipping on your butt yeah i
might not make it to the loom before
it all came out oops i mind that this uh
prickles
that one has definitely seen
better days oh yeah
we certainly hope you enjoyed coming
along with us to discover a little piece
of amelia earhart history
that not a lot of people know about yeah
and the double d dude ranch very
interesting
and on that note get out there go and
explore
put another pin in the atlas and we will
see you
on our next adventure bye
singing to keep the bears away the bears
away
the bears away singing to keep the bears
away
so they don't have us for dinner and
lunch and breakfast
