Tonight, a basketball tournament is honoring the life of a Springfield resident who died in a car crash three years ago.
22 News reporter Kaylee Thomas is live at the Basketball Hall of Fame with how this tournament is promoting safe driving. Kaylee.
That is right, Christina. Keep drivers safe. That is the message here tonight.
And dozens of people are here in the stands showing their support for this cause.
Again, this is the third annual Kevin Shippey Basketball Fundraiser Tournament here at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield.
Shippey was a student at Springfield Technical Community College studying business when he tragically died in a car crash in 2021.
Many at this tournament hope to raise awareness to prevent further tragedies on the road and to tell people to stay safe behind the wheel.
The roads are very dangerous and we have to be aware of our texting while we're driving and all of those sort of things.
So this is Motor Vehicle Safety Month and we're here representing for Kevin, the Shippey Foundation and also everyone else that lost their lives.
A portion of the proceeds tonight will go towards those who have lost a loved one in a motor vehicle accident.
It will also support children who want to pursue their passions in basketball or performing arts.
One fifth grader tonight from Frederick Harris Elementary School will also be receiving $275.

Working for you in Springfield, Kaylee Thomas, 22 News.
