#DadHowDoI #RobKenney #HowTo #WriteaCheck
hey kids nice to see you again
so today i'm going to show you how to
write a check and i've drawn it up here
on the whiteboard to kind of walk you
through it i realize you don't probably
write checks very often but when you
need to
it'll be helpful to know how to do it so
this is actually in my book on page 130
there it is right there but i'm just
going to walk you through the steps to
try to simplify it even more
uh but first i do have a dad joke for
you so
so what do they call a check
in australia
well of course it's a check mate
ah so anyway let's get started
okay so i'm just gonna walk you through
the basics of a check
uh just so you can understand and get
familiar with it and i'm gonna answer
your question on probably the the one
line that's confusing in all this it's
pretty simple but if you look at it as a
whole it can be a little overwhelming
start breaking it down into small pieces
it's fairly fairly easy so um so i got
the check written in blue and then i uh
so that's the stuff that's already
pre-printed everything in black is stuff
you'll have to fill out when you write a
check
okay so here's your personal information
and then this is paid to the order of
who you're making it up to the date
the box for the money the check number
uh and then this line here is the one i
think that's confusing and then we get
down to here my bank
and then what's it for and then you have
a routing number and an account number
and then you sign and then this is where
you sign it that's your signature okay
so let's just break it down by the stuff
that we actually have to enter
uh
okay so you want to put the date you
start off with a date it's always good
to date things so you have a record
because it's easy especially as you get
older you go oh when did i do that you
know and plus when you got a transaction
like this you always want to make sure
it's dated
okay and then paint to the order of in
this case it's bayview apartments okay
so i'm writing out who who am i writing
that check to
and here's the dollar amount 650 53 okay
and here's the part that i i'm pretty
sure is the part that's confusing to
people if you've never written a check
what do you do here on this line and
what you do is you write out the dollar
amount okay not the cents but the dollar
amount so in this case we got 650
right 650 650 and 53 100s which is 53
cents another way of saying that and
then you just put a line out to the end
okay
um and you do that line the way i what i
was taught that you put that line out
just so people can't add something to it
right so i always just draw a line from
it okay and then down here you have
what's it for what's the memo for okay
or what's the check for it's a way to
remember why you wrote that check you
know if you're writing lots of checks
you're probably not writing lots of
checks but if you're in business you
might be um
but in any case it's good to remember
why did i write that check to to that
particular person for a you know for
rent it's probably pretty easy but
for something else you just want to
remember why you wrote that check and so
for this one it says monthly rent march
okay
and then uh and then you sign it and
that's all there is to it just to
clarify on this down here what this what
these numbers are is this is a routing
number for your bank and it tells the
the when they go to cash it tells what
bank they're gonna draw the money from
this what happens behind the scenes
nothing you need to worry about but it's
a routing number from your bank and then
your account number so they know what
account to draw it from at that bank
okay so that's what that is
and i think that's all there is to it
hopefully this was helpful to you thanks
for watching and god bless you
