The Dish: Dante and Luigi's
time now for the dish and tonight we're
heading inside of a Storage South
Philadelphia Italian restaurant our
Alicia velli takes us to Dante and
Luigi's where they are celebrating
125 years of food family and some pretty
iconic
stories who are Dante and Luigi so the
original owner of the restaurant was
Michael dco and his sons were Dante and
Luigi and it's been a South Philly
staple at the corner of 10th and
Catherine streets for
125 years this opened in 1899 1899 and
it's been an open ever since continually
unbelievable there's so much history in
this space and it is very carefully
preserved the way you walk in the door
and you feel like you've been
transported to the Past do you feel like
that's how you sustain in the future
because there's something nostalgic of
course and I think that I I think the
most important thing about this
restaurant is that we don't ever change
what we are and if the walls could talk
you'd listen Philly's got a lot of
stories and you love like the the ones
that kind of like murmur through right
who ate there who was there this is the
kind of restaurant where the Who's Who
and the everybody would come to eat yeah
they did and it was I mean there's
there's such a long history including
that famous story about a Mafia Shooting
it's Laura around here in the ' 50s
there were the mob in one room and the
FBI in the other room and they would eat
lunch together in the different rooms
and watch each other this is true story
and when it comes to the menu some
things haven't changed since
1899 this is perchell genoves which is
just so traditional to this restaurant
it's a real bolog sauce and when you
have a pasta that's been on the menu
for25 years I think you got something
going I think it speaks for itself yes
[Music]
and while we were at Dante and Luigi's
they shared their recipe for one of
their best sellers the classic Italian
soup a pasta fol find the recipe right
