Hi guys, what's up? My name is Simon. Welcome to Tomans Drum Bash.
And in today's video, I'm going to break down Dave Grohl's iconic drum fill from the song
Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana.
The fill is based on a 16th note subdivision and Dave once mentioned in an interview
that he got the idea for the fill from a 70s or 80s disco song.
And it's played with snare, hi-hat and bass drum.
And the rhythm of the snare and hi-hat is played like this.
All you have to do now is to play the bass drum in between your snare and hi-hat until beat 4.
And on beat 4, you play two eighth notes with your snare and bass drum.
Slowly increase the pace.
Here's an exercise to practice your hand-foot coordination
so that the fill later will become a lot easier to play.
Start playing eighth notes on your snare with alternating hands.
Add the bass drum in between and then start orchestrating your hands.
Now, try to play the fill again.
It should be a lot easier by now.
Thank you very much everybody, I hope you enjoyed this lesson.
Please leave a comment and tell me all about your favorite iconic drum fills
so that we can keep this series going on.

Until then, take care, stay safe, Simon out.
Bye bye.
