I don't have a relationship with fame.
Fame is like a weird relative that I don't pay attention to,
but then it rears its ugly head every once in a while.
Ah, he came up to the barbecue.
Yeah, it exists, but it's not something...
Burl the chicken, son of a bitch fame.
I don't try to run from it, maintain it.
It just isn't something that is a part of my life.
The drunk uncle.
Fame is the drunk uncle.
That's a great quote.
You'll be working with him when you're in the show.
That's what they call him, the UFO.
I mean, I didn't accept the film because of what it wasn't.
I love the film because of what it is.
And so what attracted me to it was that it was...
that it had this emotional, cerebral existence,
and it was what it left me with after reading it.
The feeling, the emotion, the questions.
That's what attracted me.
Not everyone is wired for what you're about to do.
So what do they look like?
You'll see soon enough.
When I was introduced to the idea of sort of an alien,
it was E.T., so that's the one I have the most affection for.
But there's been so many over the years to explore larger themes
that I'm really intrigued by,
be it, you know, Contact or even Starman,
because that was fun.
Yeah?
Yeah, so, like, there's a lot that I've...
I like Close Encounters a lot and E.T.
A lot over the years that have piqued my interest.
What happens now?
They arrive.
We had puppeteers that were awesome running around,
and I think they still were leotards.
Like, they were very professional, and they had their...
Yeah, I never saw them.
...big poles with balls on the end,
and they ran around behind the scrim for us.
So we would have today...
Normally we would just be looking at a tennis ball or something
or an X on a wall,
but because the creatures moved a lot
and they were animated,
they just kept moving them around,
so they kept changing our eye lines, such as why.
And I like that they called it Arrival,
because then you would be like,
They arrive!
Like, really, like, they arrive.
That's right.
There's this scene I had to write, and...
Foot is your porpoise on the earth.
Porpoise on the earth.
It was earth.
I didn't even get the H.
I had to do all this talking and writing,
which, turns out, was very hard for me.
It was difficult.
It was a linguist.
And I turn around and look.
I was like, guys, this isn't going to work.
And they're like, why?
And I'm like, and it said,
What is your porpoise on earth?
I could misspell that.
