Today I look at the new Callaway Elyte X Irons, they could be the most forgiving irons of 2025, they might be the longest irons for slow swing speeds, they could be the easiest irons for mid/high handicap golfers but I found out that this wasnt the case, check out this video before you buy your next set of irons.
Just an Average Golfer giving unbiased opinions on all things golf, product tests, Golf travel vlogs and golf news!
in a recent survey I posted on YouTube
Community tab I asked the question which
Callaway Elite product were you most
interested in seeing and surprisingly it
wasn't driver it wasn't Fairwood it
wasn't hybrid it was in fact the new
Elite irons and that's what we're going
to have a look at in today's video on my
first look they were super impressive at
least that's how they looked but what
happened when I took a deeper dive into
the numbers do these irons actually
provide a real good option for average
golfers or is that something in there
that could be a problem that you might
have overlooked this is the end of the
bag where I perhaps got a little bit of
a little bit of problem because it is it
is bulky it's a very chunky iron um yeah
that's my only my only sort of negative
with these irons is that just does go
really
bulky yeah so straight away be
interested to see whether the numers
do we just come up a little bit short I
put 120 in as the target you could see
very much a 3/4 swing there you know 109
carry 67
spin um other interesting bits I need to
change some of that really that data so
back to that data there I've just
switched stuff up but we're interested
in high launching ball uh which we're
expecting from these irons even in the
wedges uh land angle
50° um low point was actually more for
my benefit than yours so yeah yeah it's
doing okay I'm going to hit some balls
with this and see what we do in terms of
average the big deal the one positive I
would take and from my initial thought
on trying these irons was just
um that just a bit of a pull left just
how good they feel because that's the
say a bit of a pull left a lot of pull
left it was
um that there's so much better in my
opinion than what they've done in the
past Callaway with the game improvement
iron um again just that nice balance
between a ball that goes nice off the
club
face we're not doing very well in terms
of our intended target
um but I will say very impressed with
what these are supposed to be doing see
if we can get at least one down the
middle started off really well uh lost
it a little bit in between and then
we've done a 109 carry again which is is
just going to come up right the very
front of that green right few more with
this and I'll move on into the uh into
the S iron I think my performance wasn't
too good but I think in all fairness the
club's performance was and did exactly
what we would hope for right so next up
moving to the S iron now this is the
kind of the iron for me where things
start to change so from 76 into five
iron and we'll get to five iron shortly
I want a bit of help so I I don't mind
the thicker Top Line um as it was a
problem with the wedge anyway
performance-wise set up a little Target
164 yards away don't forget this is a
strong lofted iron and as you can see
started off with a number of shots that
are my kind of easy swing with a bit of
a trying to hit a bit of a cut into this
uh relatively small Target 15 yard
green we did okay you can see the uh
kind of spin rate is a number that
is low um it's always a concern for a
lot of people who watch the channel
regularly you'll also understand that
it's something that happens frequently
off a map for me never really
experienced a problem out on the golf
course however take from it what you
will um what was interesting for me was
the ball was as we'd expect launching
very high so tick there spin number low
but descent angle again very steep so
it's that combination are they going to
stop on greens well in my opinion it
would be yes yes we got fast ball speeds
relative to Club head speed and then I
just started to try and hit the ball a
little bit right to left there's always
this myth I think that you can only
shape a ball with a blade uh I think
that's absolute nonsense by mere virtue
of the fact that we can hugely slice or
hugely hook a ball that tells its own
story so yes I was able to control a
ball into arguably hit it a little bit
better once I moved into trying to hit
the ball from a little bit of a right to
left shape we hit the target quite
consistent recently the spin number was
the one data parameter that people would
point out as being worryingly low I get
that but again long-term viewers of the
channel will understand that is a
parameter that I always struggle with
whatever whatever iron I've got that can
be an issue on a mat so last one we'll
switch up into the five iron I think
it's going to go like an absolute rocket
I worry about how low that spin number
will drop right so into this fiveon um
again
the mass I want I want to see that
address cuz I want to feel like I've got
some help down at the ball um started
off I think we got to shot three where
if there have been a flag and a hole in
the middle of that we might have even
got a hole in one how it got there
though in terms of data is very much
debatable um and that's again what we
were concerned about you'll see
consistently and we'll get to it a bit
more at the end is that spin number is
an issue effectively there was another
issue in my opin iion in that is the
ball launch low which is a concern for
me and I always get confused because
these irons are designed to appeal to
those with slower Club head speeds and
yet The Lofts are jacked so to speak
which then has a negative impact on
launch so I don't think um we got a ball
that launches above 18° maybe the first
one did so for me that's a low ball
flight with a five I then you're
combining that with that spin number
that I referred to and you'll see that
there's an issue now I would say of
swinging a club great today um so there
is help there in terms of ball speeds is
the biggest bonus I would say or suggest
that I've seen from this club because
every shot that I hit pretty much got to
flag High not necessarily hit the green
but was in and around the area so ball
speeds are definitely within this club
face but
let's just go through those spin rates
now and you'll see if you concentrate on
two parameters Spin and launch what
you'll see is both of them are
incredibly low that couple with that
land angle is worrying we're coming in
with a flat ball flight with a ball
that's arguably spinning even Low by my
standards then you've got a concern so
that's where these ions have got a lot
of positives but they also come with uh
yeah a few potential issues to say the
so I'm going to leave it
there these reviews at the moment are
very much data because well we can't get
out on a golf course it's covered in
snow here in the UK but I think data you
know it does tell a tale and I think
it's important as I always say that you
as a golfer gets custom fit if you don't
you pick these up off the shelf they
could have a detrimental um impact on
your game they look fantastic and in
many parameters they are they're fast as
hell but you've compromises to make so
before you make any purchase of near
1,000 quid on a set of irons make sure
you get custom fit and make sure you
consider all those parameters that suit
your game before you part with that
money right as ever thank you for
watching let me know what you think of
that performance in some ways a bit of a
surprise and a bit disappointing in some
areas as well but let me know what you
think comments down below I'll see you
soon
