Balance Assessment Test - Romberg's Test - Clinical Skills - Dr Gill
The Romberg test is typically performed on patients reporting issues with balance and vertigo who may have been experiencing falls
The Romberg's test allows a clinician to narrow down to cause of imbalance to either a vestibular issue or a problem with proprioception.
The Romberg's test would be positive in conditions affecting the dorsal columns, as such it is a clinical skill often performed in neurological examinations.
As Romberg's sign or a positive rombergs test may be seen in both vestibular and proprioceptive issues it may occur in many conditions - which would include:

hello and welcome back to the channel my
name is Dr James Gill and you've joined
us for a video where we'll demonstrate
the romberg's test
an assessment of your balance today
okay yeah
okay so that's going to involve you
having a quick walk and then letting us
observe you doing a couple of Maneuvers
for us
before we go any further could you
please confirm your name and date of
birth I'll be 2nd January 2000. super
so it's the best of your knowledge do
you have any problems with your balance
or your walking
so I'd just like to see you walk
forwards and backwards please
and then turn to face me please
okay so if you could stand with your
feet shoulder width apart
and then if you cross your arms over
your chest please
and if you could just focus forwards for
me and I'm going to time 30 seconds and
I'm going to observing it as we do so so
please keep your eyes fixed that way
thank you so there was a normal part of
the test now we're going to make it
slightly more difficult again keeping
your legs shoulder width apart with your
arms cross over your chest I'm going to
put my hands either side of you you will
not fall if there's any problems I'll
tap you to one shoulder or the other or
stop you moving overall and I'm going to
ask you to close your eyes and again
we're going to time for 30 seconds if
there's a problem I see you moving I'll
tap you once I do the other please open
your eyes
so with that in mind do you feel safe to
continue
so if you click close your eyes please
and we're going to see if there's any
swaying at all as you stand there
Okay so we've got a very slight sweat
there but that's normal
okay and there's our 30 seconds so open
your eyes super thank you okay so that
completes our examination uh there are
no abnormalities there uh do you have
any questions for myself no super thank
you very much for your time
