With so many aircraft already on the order books with Boeing and Airbus,
it seems unnecessary for Emirates to place additional orders with either planemaker.
However, it sounds like this is going to be happening later this year.
Let's take a look at this piece of news in today's video.
As reported by CH Aviation, Emirates has plans to place a new aircraft order during the Dubai
Airshow in November 2025. This news comes via an interview with the company's president,
Tim Clark, who spoke to Bloomberg. Clark said that delivery dates remain
a challenge for the airline and that any new aircraft orders at the airshow
would likely arrive only in the mid-2030s. Clark told Bloomberg that the carrier was
in the market for Airbus A350s and Boeing 777Xs. He added that the airline remains
committed to the 777X program and that new orders for the type will follow in the future.
Separately, the Emirates president had told Aviation Week that the A350-1000 was quote-unquote
of interest to his airline. However, Emirates needed more assurances about the durability
of the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97, the engine powering this stretched, heavier A350 variant.
To us, this seems like a smart move. Amid present aircraft delivery delays and uncertainty about
future manufacturing capabilities, it makes sense that Emirates would want to secure a spot
in line for more aircraft further into the future. The pandemic, the war in Ukraine,
and current trade tensions have exposed weaknesses in the global supply chain.
While simply ordering more aircraft won't solve such issues or protect against them,
it will ensure that Emirates isn't waiting longer than necessary behind other airlines
should delivery delays persist. At the same time, it's interesting to note that Emirates is
considering ordering more Boeing 777X aircraft despite not yet receiving and operating its first
of the type. While we're confident that Boeing, GE Aerospace, and aviation regulators will take
all the necessary steps to ensure safe and well-performing aircraft, it would make more
sense to wait and see how the 777X performs in the real world, as this has yet to happen.
Of course, Emirates does always have the option to swap or cancel orders
should it discover that a certain aircraft type fails to meet its expectations.
Unfortunately, yet again, the Airbus A330neo is left out of the conversation.
It's notable that in 2019, Emirates had placed an order for 40 A330-900 aircraft.
However, this was dropped in favor of more A350-900s.
But what do you think of Emirates ordering more aircraft?
Do you think the A350-1000 has a good chance of being picked up this time?
