Holidays like Mother's Day can be a
difficult time for those grieving a
loss. And 22 News reporter Victoria
Buddy joins us live in studio after
speaking with a grief and growth coach
on ways to cope.
Christina, supporting the way you or
someone you love feels this time of year
is important to those grieving. Experts
say it's okay to feel the way you do or
take the time you need to remember
someone you love.
These days are what I call marker days.
Mother's Day or a death anniversary. We
know that our emotions are going to be
very heightened. Mother's Day can be a
difficult time for those mourning the
loss of a mother or child. Experts say
supporting yourself or a loved one is
just as important this time of year.
According to Leanne Smola, a grief and
personal growth coach, the day can be
emotionally challenging. Start your day
by trying to do something grounding.
Whether that's making a nice hot cup of
coffee or tea and sitting outside on
your porch, getting yourself in the
outdoors. Experts are reminding people
to take time for yourself throughout the
day. This includes taking a break from
social media if needed. Read or meditate
or make your favorite meal. Make sure
that everyone that's in this space is
giving themselves permission to feel the
way that they feel. And there's no right
or wrong way to do it. Even some of the
heaviest feelings that are very, very
challenging are normal when we're
grieving.
Grief and growth coaches like Smalla are
reminding people that grief lasts a
lifetime and being able to support those
around you who may need some extra love
can mean more than you know. For now,
working for you, Victoria Buddy, 22
