In 2021, we spent four months in Baja, Mexico.
It was an amazing experience, full of stunning landscapes,
incredible people, a little bit of drama,
and most of all, pure adventure.
The Baja Peninsula touched our hearts.
We feel that Baja will always hold a special place
within the Art With Ariat story.
And so we wanted to pay tribute to this amazing place
by leading you through our most memorable moments of Baja.
♪♪♪
Okay, so today is a really big day
because it's the first day that, well, the first time
that we're taking this bus across an international border.
So right now, we're in Tecate, California,
and over there, you can see Tecate, Mexico.
And you might even be able to see the wall a little bit.
And so it's the first time it's crossing a border.
This is pretty exciting.
Very exciting.
Mexico, aquí vamos.
We entered Baja on February 13, 2021.
We didn't know how far down the peninsula we would go,
and we didn't know how long we would stay.
It was a completely blank page.
Our first destination was San Felipe.
But since we had crossed in Tecate,
we needed to get over this minor little thing
called La Rumorosa Pass.
Then onwards to San Felipe.
When we arrived in San Felipe,
we got our first taste
of what boondocking looks like in Baja.
Little did we know, we hadn't seen anything yet.
So we are here at the beach in San Felipe,
and we just got someone to come and knock on our bus,
asking us for help.
Got stuck there last night.
Good thing is that we have a strong rope,
and Bobby's really strong,
so Bobby's to the rescue.
Let's go get this guy out of there.
And then he found that the battery was dead too.
But a little jump from Bobby did the trick.
San Felipe gave us a little taste of Baja,
and we wanted to see more.
So we headed off towards Bahia de Los Angeles.
This is when things started to get good.
It's hard to describe just how majestic
the landscape of Baja is.
You have to drive through it,
feeling the vastness of its space.
It's a wild, open, sunburned, and boundless place.
And then just like that, there we were.
We tucked up against the Sea of Cortez,
and our time at Bahia de Los Angeles began.
Bahia de Los Angeles, amazing place.
We took it slow here,
soaking up the gift of being able to park our home
in such an incredible setting.
And again, the landscape in Baja,
majestic, humbling, breathtaking.
One night, we noticed the craziest thing.
We had no idea that every night,
the ditch beside the bus became a knee-deep river
of seawater as the tide came in.
Good thing we didn't park here.
That would have been a nasty surprise.
One day, we got a visit from some soldiers,
but they ended up just being cool dudes
who were curious about the bus.
And then, by random chance,
we met some of the coolest people.
Simone and Lucia are from Italy,
and they have been traveling for five years across the world
in their converted military truck, nicknamed Valentino.
Let's check out the amazing truck overlander.
Oh, nice.
I love the wood.
Yeah, this is our house.
Wow.
We built up early in the high
because we want space.
We don't want to be closed in a small space.
You see all that?
Whoa, that's a master control for everything.
Yes, this is our control.
Inside, we have domotic.
So we love to have everything connected to the domotic system
so the domotic have the control of everything inside.
So if there is some problem on the temperature,
some problem on the pressure of the water,
the domotic stops everything
and take control of the problem.
It's useful for us to save our money on battery,
on the things that can broke if there is some problem.
Tell to someone, make this for me because it's impossible.
Bathroom.
How much time did it take?
Two years.
Two years of work.
We work in the office during the day
and we work every weekend, every night
and all the holidays.
And at the end, when I start to work,
I work full-time three months
and to finish everything.
It's a special thing when two journeys cross paths,
especially when it was completely unplanned.
We are going to follow you on Instagram and YouTube.
Maybe we meet again in the United States.
It would be good.
We could have stayed at Valle de Los Angeles forever
but there was one big issue.
Content creators can't be too long without Wi-Fi
so we had to move on.
So this is really cool.
This is where the water usually comes to
but the tide went out
so check out where it is now.
We could walk to this entrance basically.
It looks a lot more dry from afar.
That's how far the bus is.
And this is where the water comes in.
Time to go back before the tide comes back in.
All right, let's get back to the bus.
Today we got some fresh clams from local fishermen
and I'm really excited to cook a delicious
are we there yet clam pasta.
Now you won't believe what happened next.
We were moving the bus to be closer to the nearby sand dunes,
Las Dunas de la Soledad.
We had scoped out the road with the car
and it seemed completely passable in the bus.
Keep going!
So do you remember that map that we made of our route
going all through the Americas?
Well it has ended
and I think a rather appropriate way.
I was planning on burning it as a ceremonial
like burning the clam thing.
There's part of the map down there.
We are stuck in the mood.
Kind of like life sometimes.
Sometimes you're just stuck in the mood.
Ready?
Ready!
Do it, you can do it!
I see it's not wanting to move an inch.
Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
Oh she's so close!
It's so close!
But it's going...
She's going deeper.
It's just too heavy.
Not fun.
It's not fun knowing whether you'll be able to get out or not.
It's 45 minutes later and we still haven't gotten it out.
Come on, come on, come on.
Okay he got out but now we're sinking again.
Now, come!
There you go.
Nope!
All right, now it's worse.
Now it's worse.
Now it's a lot worse.
Holy!
Oh man, we had it!
We have to figure this out now because we're just sinking.
Oh my god, it's so much worse.
Oh my god.
The bus absolutely will not move.
It is like completely stuck.
You can see how deep it is.
The differential is touching the ground which is super not okay.
And you can see all our best efforts.
We aren't we there yet?
Plan map is completely torn to shreds which is kind of, you know,
complicative.
Symbolic of reality.
These ones are fine.
It's these ones back here that are the problem.
See Jose's work with Martillo.
And this just does not want to move.
You know, we tried and tried and tried and tried and it's just stuck.
Jose just called me.
He went with the car.
There's a military base nearby so he just called me and said,
get the GoPro ready because I'm about to come with a 4x4 from the Guardia Nacional,
the National Guard.
So, awesome.
They're about to rescue our butts.
Cavalry's here.
That was our plan.
And I think it's just only appropriate that the plan has been ripped to shreds
as we got ourselves stuck out of the mud.
This isn't like a New Year's resolution or a new, how would you say this,
a new way of thinking about the project.
I don't know what it is.
We didn't just burn the plan.
We ripped it to shreds.
We were unstuck but now there was only one issue.
That had been the only way into the dunes
which meant it was also the only way out.
But we weren't going to think of that just yet.
As long as we were there in the dunes,
we were going to enjoy it and capture some amazing things.
We even filmed for a music video there.
And then it was time to try to get back out.
Okay, so here's the deal.
When the National Guard pulled us out, the only way they could pull us out was forward
which meant we had to come into this space where we've been parked for a few days.
It's been amazing.
But now to get out of here, we have to go back through
either the same place that we came through when we got stuck
or another spot which doesn't look much better.
So get ready for possibly episode number two in the Getting Stuck Saga.
We'll show you how it's going.
There's a lot of wind today so it'll all be muted
but we'll show you how it goes and hopefully we make it through with no problems.
This is what we had to get through
and even though it looks pretty solid, so did the other spot.
This is where we came through and got stuck.
So it was a complete gamble.
We were about to find out if we could free Bobby from the sand dunes.
Next time on Aren't We There Yet.
Now wait, wasn't this supposed to be on the next time?
Yes, it was and that's on me.
When I started writing the script for this video,
I quickly realized there were so many amazing moments from Baja
that it had to be split into three parts.
So this particular piece of drama,
you'll see that in two weeks in the Most Memorable Moments of Baja, part three.
