Hello friends of the Italian language, in today's video I want to talk to you about some sites and some extensions
to study the Italian language or to improve your learning process of the Italian language.
I remind you that all these apps, these sites that I will recommend are useful
insofar as you remember to be focused on what is your final goal,
that is, learning to speak, learning to communicate in the Italian language
and not simply having a series of very strong or very powerful tools
that however do not help you speak in the Italian language.
So keep this premise in mind.
The first site I want to talk to you about is YouTube.
It seems to me the most complete tool today for learning any language or most languages.
In particular, for learning the Italian language, it is a very strong tool
because it allows you to search for both content ranging from A1 to C2
and it allows you to search for different interests.
So YouTube is certainly a fundamental tool when it comes to learning languages.
I absolutely recommend this video by Davide in which he talked about the use of YouTube to study a language
and in particular in this video he explained how to use YouTube to study the Italian language.
It's a 15-minute, 16-minute video.
I absolutely recommend it also because there are several very useful suggestions.
The most important messages of this video are the use of filters
and the use of this extension called Two Captions.
And in particular with the filters you can look for content or videos that are subtitled in Italian
and with Two Captions you can not only have the subtitles in Italian
but you can also have the automatic translation of these subtitles in the language of your interest.
One thing I would like to add, which was not present two years ago, so in 2020,
is that YouTube itself has added this function, which is the transcription sample function.
And so in this way, when you see a video, you can go to the transcription of the video itself
and follow what is said during the video.
And it seems to me an extremely useful function because in this way you can follow the original video
without looking at the subtitles, but in case you need to understand what has been said,
you can look at the transcription and see what has been said.
Another tool that I recommend is called ImpTranslator and I learned about this video thanks to Luca Lampariello.
In this video he talked about ImpTranslator
and it basically allows you to translate your text or your web page instantly.
So it's a free extension, it has this face, ImpTranslator, dictionary translator, voice.
It is an extension that allows you to translate instantly what you are reading or the site you are visiting.
I'll give you an example with the Italian newsletter in 7 minutes.
It could be that I want to translate a word, so I might want to translate often.
And in this case I have set the extension to translate from Italian to English.
It could also be that I am interested in translating a small paragraph or an entire paragraph,
so I just have to click on the ImpTranslator icon again.
But if you want you can also click the right button and then click on Inline Translator.
And in this case it says Translate in French because I had done a test before with the translation in French.
You can simply change the settings of the extension and you will see the translation of these sentences in your language of interest,
so for example in English.
I could also be interested in changing the language of translation,
so you just have to click Alt-S and you can change the language of destination with English, for example.
And in this way you can translate that text into English.
An extension that I recommend you to use in case you are using this extension,
so you are using ImpTranslator, is PDFmage,
which allows you to download that page or that content in PDF and then print it, if you need to print it.
So, for example, you can, with this extension, simply, once you have finished translating what you needed to translate,
you can click on your PDFmage extension and the extension will save what you have found
plus the translation you have found as a PDF.
So, you will not need to translate it again when you find the same content again.
And so, by opening this PDF, which if you want you can download or if you want you can print,
not only do you find the content of the PDF, but you also find your translation
and you also find different translations based on what you have decided to translate.
Speaking of ImpTranslator, you can use this extension also to translate or to understand single words or single expressions.
In this case, I will show you how.
In the case in which your transcription is open, you can click on a particular sentence
and click on ImpTranslator, which will instantly give you the translation of what has been said.
Obviously, with the Two Captions extension, you do not need to use the ImpTranslator extension for each word,
but ImpTranslator is a slightly more selective way to translate what you need and does not translate everything.
So, let's say that for those who have a slightly more advanced level, I recommend ImpTranslator and not Two Captions,
simply because ImpTranslator will only translate what you really need and not everything.
The last tool I want to talk to you about is called Youglish
and Francesco from Vaporetto Italiano talked about this tool.
It is a very powerful tool, it works like a search engine and it is based on subtitles.
So, everything that is subtitled can be searched through Youglish.
For example, it could be that by reading my newsletter, I find a word that I do not know,
or I find a word that I do not know how to pronounce or I do not know how it can sound.
For example, it could be that I do not know how to pronounce this word,
so I can look for the word vecchiaia and listen to what the pronunciation is.
In this case, Youglish tells me that there are 91 videos in which this word has been pronounced.
The positive side of this page is that it allows you not only to listen to the pronunciation of that word or that sentence,
but it also allows you to understand what the context of that word or that sentence is.
The negative side is that it can probably distract you from having a series of videos
with probably very different contexts in which we look for the pronunciation of that word.
So, I advise you to use this extension only if you are very good
to immediately return to what was your main goal,
that is, to learn the language and understand what the use of that word was,
and close the extension or close the page.
Because otherwise you will miss other videos in which that word or that sentence is used.
A site that has a very similar goal but with a slightly different operation is Forvo.
Forvo allows you to find the pronunciation of the word you are interested in,
avoiding to get too distracted.
For example, I could look for the pronunciation of the word lavoretto.
Lavoretto, for example.
So, in this case, you don't have the context of that word,
but you have the pronunciation of that word which is almost always, almost 100%, very, very reliable.
Because you can also hear from the recordings that we are talking about recordings of real people
and not of computers or artificial voices.
Well friends, I hope this video has been useful to you.
And let me know if you already knew some of these sites or some of these extensions.
I am very grateful to the people who decide to share these suggestions or these sites.
So, thanks to people like Davide, like Luca, like Francesco.
I am very, very happy and I think it is really the added value of the Internet
and the added value of the web in general
which is something that 30 or 40 years ago was much less easy and much more difficult.
And I am happy to be able to share these tools with you.
So let me know if you will use these tools
and let me know if there are other tools for studying the Italian language.
As always, I remind you that every week I send a completely free newsletter
which will remain free forever
in which I talk about a word and some meanings related to that word
and I talk about some songs or some videos related to that word.
Also, I remind you that if you want you can support me financially both on Patreon and Ko-fi.
Unfortunately, you will not find any additional material
simply because everything I do and everything I create is already freely available online.
I thank you for watching this video and see you in the next video.
Bye!
