How much is this one in Korean?
Annyeonghaseyo. I'm Morning.
Here to teach you practical real Korean.
What's the most important thing when traveling in Korea?
Money, of course.
So, what's something you absolutely need to know before coming to Korea?
It's Korean money.
If you come here without knowing what Korean money looks like or how to count it,
what do you think will happen?
You'll be fumbling every time you pay for something, unsure of how much to give.
Or you might say,
Teacher, I'll just pay with my card, so it's fine, right?
Even if you use your card, you still need to ask about and understand the prices of things.
So you definitely need to know how to count Korean money.
That way, you can easily buy street food and souvenirs in Korea.
So today, we're going to learn all about Korean bills and coins,
what they look like, and how to count them.
By the end of this video, you'll be able to count, talk about, and understand Korean money.
First, the smallest money is the 10 won coin.
In Korean, 10 won.
Can you repeat after me?
10 won.
10 means 10, and won refers to the Korean currency.
In Korean, there are two number systems, Sino-Korean and Native Korean.
When counting money, we always use the Sino-Korean numbers.
On the head side of the coin, we'll find the Dabotapagoda,
one of Korea's national treasures, along with the words 10 won.
And on the tail side, it shows the number 10, the year of issue,
and the words ํ๊ตญ์ํ, which means Bank of Korea.
The 10 won is currently worth slightly less than 1 cent in US dollars, about 0.8 cents.
Because of this, it's not commonly used in daily life.
You might use it to buy a plastic bag at a convenience store.
If you have two of these coins, how much is that?
Three of them.
Four of them.
And if you have five 10 won coins, how much is that?
Next is the 50 won coin.
Five 10 won coins make 50 won.
50 means 50, and won is the currency.
On the head side of the coin, there is an image of rice plants and the words ์ค์ญ์.
The reason for the rice is that it symbolizes the staple food of Koreans.
On the tail side, it shows the number 50, and ์ค์ญ์ is worth about 4 cents in US dollars.
This coin is also not commonly used in daily life.
If you have two ์ค์ญ์, how much is that?
That's right, it's 100 won.
100 means 100, and won is the currency.
From the 100 won coin onwards, it is commonly used in daily life.
On the head side, there is a portrait of admirer Lee Soon-shin,
a renowned general and national hero from the late 16th century.
On the tail side, it shows the number 100.
The 100 won is worth about 8 cents in US dollars.
If you have five 100 won coins, how much is that?
This one, the last and highest value coin is the 500 won coin.
500 means 500, and won is the currency.
On the head side of the coin, there is a crane,
and on the tail side, there is the number 500.
The crane is on the coin because it symbolizes scholarship, good luck, and long life,
which are things Koreans really like.
The 500 won is worth about 40 cents in US dollars.
If you have two 500 won coins, how much is that?
That's right, it would be 1,000 won.
Now, let's move on to paper money.
The first one is the 1,000 won note.
1,000 means 1,000, and won is the currency.
The note is light blue in color.
On the front, there is a portrait of Lee Hwang,
and on the back, there is a beautiful landscape painting.
Lee Hwang on the 1,000 won note is prominent Korean Confucian scholar of the Joseon dynasty.
The 1,000 won is worth a bit less than 1 US dollar, about 80 cents.
If you have five 1,000 won notes, how much is that?
Next is the 5,000 won note.
5,000 means 5,000, and won is the currency.
The color of this note is light orange or beige,
and on the front, there is a portrait of Lee Yi.
He was a notable Korean Confucian scholar and reformer of the Joseon dynasty.
And on the back, there is a painting of Lee Yi's mother,
The 5,000 won is worth about 4 US dollars.
If you have two 5,000 won, how much is that?
That's right, it's 10,000 won.
The color of this note is green.
On the front, there is a portrait of King Sejong,
and on the back, there is an image of a Korean astronomical club, which is a national treasure.
If you study Korean, you might have heard King Sejong.
He's the one who created Korean alphabet, Hangul.
Because of that, he's featured on the 10,000 won note,
which used to be the highest denomination before the 50,000 won notes were introduced.
The 10,000 won is worth about 8 US dollars.
Now, let's take a look at the highest value banknotes in Korea.
Next is the 50,000 won note.
5๋ง means 50,000 and 1 is the currency.
The 50,000 won note is introduced in 2009.
Before that, 10,000 won note was the highest value,
but due to economic growth and inflation, there was a need for higher value currency.
The 50 won note is yellow and green in color.
On the front side, there is a portrait of Shin Saimdang, his mother,
and on the back, you can see the beautiful painting.
Shin Saimdang was the outstanding artist and poet,
and he's also a symbol of a good mother who valued respect and education.
