We set off on our first European adventure in our motorhome, we're doing a 3 month tour of France and Spain. This is our first vlog in Europe. We’re travelling to France in our motorhome and taking the DFDS Newhaven to Dieppe Ferry crossing. This is the start of our 3 month motorhome Roadtrip to France and Spain, we will land in Dieppe and need to find an Aire to stay for the night...but is it as easy as it sounds?!! This vanlife video will show you where to park up the night before your ferry in Newhaven and where we parked in an Aire overnight on arrival in Dieppe. We also show you around the DFDS Ferry, The Seven Sisters, which was a four hour crossing from the UK to France. We’re on our Europe 2024 adventure and will be travelling throughout Europe and the UK this year in our motorhome. Our current journey is through France to Spain. We’re a full loving retired couple who enjoy looking for funny and quirky adventures in our motorhome.
Morning! Hey, we're in the van and we're setting sail today.
So we're in a lovely little location that we parked up in last night, aren't we?
That's beautiful, in Seaford.
We're in Seaford. I'm going to show you in a second what it looks like.
Got a lovely sea view, sounds idyllic, but it was bloody ripe chucking it down last night.
And windy.
Windy! The van was rocking! You could have come a-knocking, there was an out going on.
But it's been a right windy old night and we really felt the cold, didn't we?
But let's show you where we are.
We're literally opposite the rugby club, aren't we?
Seaford Rugby Club, yeah.
And found it on park for night, freebie park up.
Don't forget you've got to be self-contained if you're going to do this.
We did read that some of the residents are a bit unhappy in this location if you stay here
and I suspect in season they probably would be.
But we're not outside of any residences, so we made sure we picked a parking place that's
not near houses.
Yeah, let's show you where it is anyway in case you want to come this way.
So here we are parked up.
There's our new logo.
If you see us, if you see the deck Al, then give us a shout.
Right, we're right on the road.
There's a beach cleanup guy going down there.
But look at that.
How's that for a view this morning?
It's a bit grey, but I'm hoping that the crossing will be okay.
But oh god, caught Gary tucking himself in again.
Nothing else that bad.
I felt like I was wearing a skirt.
But you can see we're right on the roadway.
There was a bit of road noise, but not a lot in the evening was there?
I reckon it would be worse if it was a nice sunny day though.
Right, first stop.
Let's pop at Lidl's.
So all of you probably do the same as us.
Grab your last minute provisions, but you can't bring any dairy through, can you, Gary?
No meat or dairy.
No meat or dairy through.
So we've kind of emptied the fridge.
I've literally just got, what have I got left in?
Oh, I've got a bit of butter in there that's gonna have to go and a couple of cherry tomatoes.
It looks like, you know, I'm an athlete.
The stuff that's in the fridge.
But anyway, let's get a couple of bits.
We like getting the dried goods in Lidl's and Aldi because it's super cheap.
And then that way, save a few quid when we get over there.
So the parking in Seaford is literally all the way along the front.
But if you park towards the end where the residents are,
you can imagine they probably do get a bit upset.
So this is the road as you're coming into Newhaven.
We were only about two miles off.
There's a big Sainsbury's and all sorts around here.
There's your Lidl.
Look, Gary, just there.
We're just going to get a couple of little drive bits.
So if you wanted to stay overnight right beside, there is a car park.
And this is what it looks like.
We didn't choose to stay here.
Apparently, it's quite noisy, but really good location.
There's enough for, well, quite a few motorhomes there, really.
And here is where you'll drive into the ferry terminal area.
So I think if you can't get into Seaford, that's a really good area as well.
You'll notice there's a couple of truckers here and they can make a bit of noise at night.
It's probably noisy here.
But you know what?
If you're getting on first thing in the morning,
you just want somewhere to park up, don't you?
This looks pretty good.
It's a lovely grey day, Gary, isn't it?
We're quite excited, though.
We don't care.
We're first at the check-in by the look of it.
There's no one here, but the terminal, we understand, has got Wi-Fi.
So I'm going to pop in there because I've got to do some downloading on my new phone.
Into the terminal.
No kidding.
It's perfect.
Got loads of little tables to sit in.
Little play area for the kids behind me.
Really good.
Not massive, but free Wi-Fi.
That's not bad, is it?
So you can sit here, have your Wi-Fi, do your check-in, have a cuppa.
It's great.
Perfect.
OK, so we're right in the front of the queue, aren't we?
Lane number five.
Look at that mural as well.
This is a beautiful ferry terminal.
So we're sailing with DFDS.
And how much did it cost us, Gary?
£140.
£140?
I've been telling everyone it's £115.
It was £115, and then we had to pay taxes and things like that, and it came to £140 a year.
Oh, right.
So to everyone I lied to, there you go.
There's the truth.
It's out.
I'll tell you what is annoying, how bloody premature this one is.
Be careful what you say.
Well, so I was in the terminal because I had loads of...
Because I've got a new phone, you know, like you've got to download all your apps and everything.
I needed decent Wi-Fi.
So, which is decent Wi-Fi.
In there.
And he comes bursting in like bloody Starsky and Hutch.
And he's like, you know, get in the van, get in the van, we've got to go.
I did not say that.
You did.
He's right over the top.
Over the top.
We're over the top.
And then anyway, he gets here, he goes, I've thrown the milk out and everything.
I said, why are you throwing the milk?
I've got to make a cup of tea now.
So we're stood in like the bloody lane in the queue thing.
No milk.
Because it's decided that it wanted to be so...
Well, we've got to go through customs.
It's in France.
We're still in bloody England.
So we've got almond milk for a cup of tea, which is a bag of ----.
But anyway, what a pretty little town New Haven is, isn't it?
Look at that fishing port there.
It's beautiful.
I'll tell you what, in the summer, this would be really nice, wouldn't it?
Yeah.
Here we go.
Oh my gosh, Gary.
Oh God, look at all the water that's dripping down off the top of the motorhome.
Rained a lot last night.
It poured down, didn't it?
We've just been stopped.
I think they're going to let the smaller vehicles through.
Yeah, it's just let a van go through.
He's gone onto that boat there.
How funny.
So here you go, we're boarding.
Oh God, sorry, it's a bit wobbly.
Oh, it's a gorgeous colour as well, isn't it?
It's all exciting.
It's quite narrow, eh, Gary?
How's it feel?
I'm fine.
Close this window.
To the throat of the dragon.
There you go.
Fairly straightforward, to be honest.
Oh, look, it's not a massive cargo deck.
He's going to pull you over here.
Do you know what?
I think I quite prefer these smaller crossings, don't you?
Thank you.
It doesn't look like it's rammed today, so we should be all right to get a seat.
We'll have a look at what they've got up in the ferry.
This is all right.
And we're off.
We're just coming out of New Haven.
It's absolutely beautiful here.
And it's really wet on deck, but I thought I'd show you how nice it is.
Look at this.
If this was a really nice sunny day, you'd be well sorted, wouldn't you?
This is one of the earlier decks that Gary's met a couple of people.
And you've obviously got your duty free shop.
We'll have a little mooch in there later.
And then you've got an upstairs, which apparently there's a better view.
So they have got a lift.
And if you've got a dog, you've got to keep them in the van.
But you are allowed to go down and check them, which I think is good.
And here's what we've got.
We've got deck three with a car.
Deck three and four.
We're on three.
If you come out the lift, you've got sort of seats either way.
Looks all right, actually.
I mean, it's really quite nice.
There's a TV room in there.
Oh, look, lovely bar area.
Great view up here.
So this is your deck seven.
Really good toilets.
Nice and clean.
It's all right up here.
Oh, it's quite fancy.
It's got a really nice atrium.
You can sit in the shop here.
Gary's down there.
I can spy on him.
You want to start your holiday straight away.
Here's the prices of a glass of wine.
White wine, 3.80 for a glass.
Oh, nine for a bottle.
That's good, isn't it?
That's quite cheap, actually.
17 for the red for the Bordeaux.
Not bad at all, though, really.
Oh, so we've got ourselves a nice bit of lunch.
I've got sticky pork and Gary's got beef bourguignon, haven't you?
Look at our lovely little view.
This is a nice window seat.
The restaurant's really nice, actually.
No one's in this bit.
They've all sat through there.
And there's one of those sort of, what do you call them?
Those bits where it's like a gate thing to block it off.
Like a cordon.
Like a rope rail.
Yeah, there's one of them over there.
So it looks like you can't sit here.
So I just asked the bloke, can I sit here?
He says, yeah, if you want.
So there you go.
It's like we've got our own private restaurant, isn't it, Gary?
It's great, isn't it?
We're really enjoying this ferry crossing.
I think this might be our favourite ferry crossing now.
This is what the whole restaurant looks like.
And there's little high chairs and everything, which is great.
And there's Gary.
We just got a coffee.
It was only 2.50 for the pair of us.
And I just got a couple of euro coins
because I did hear that it might be useful to have some spare euro coins.
This is what it's like travelling with Gary, look, once he's got a book.
I keep talking to him, he has to keep putting it down.
But lovely.
Still, it's just a great smashing view here.
We don't want to move because it's just so nice, isn't it?
It's lovely, isn't it?
Yeah, it's great.
So we'll show you our planning and how much we take care over what we're doing.
We're literally trying to plan where we're staying tonight, aren't we?
Sometimes we just wing it a bit, don't we?
Because we couldn't quite decide whether we wanted to stay in Thierres.
We're meeting a couple of friends tomorrow,
so hey, you shouldn't care and we'll see you in the morning.
But we're going to go to a supermarket.
We are, the Hypermarch.
We're going to pop to the Hypermarket.
Orkan Hypermarch, which is great because it's on the way.
And then about 10 minutes from the Hypermarket
is where we're going to stop tonight.
Is it India?
No, it's just outside.
So we're just going to stay...
In La Plessie.
La Plessie, oh la la, sounds amazing.
So we're going to stay there,
but let's see if you can get me out of the Hypermarket.
I can't, I love a new supermarket.
I'll get you off the boat first.
I ain't staying on the boat.
I've enjoyed the boat crossing though.
I'll tell you what though, I'll tell you what,
I would recommend this boat crossing.
It's nice, isn't it?
Really nice, really quiet.
Yeah, it's not just that though, is it Gary?
I feel, you know, you can get a decent meal.
It wasn't super cheap, the meal though, was it?
Would you pay 30 euros?
But we did have a proper meal.
It was really nice and healthy.
And we're trying to be a bit healthy.
Let's try and reverse that bloody
cup of stone we put on in America.
I don't know how we're going to manage that
when I see the vino.
But anyway, looking forward to docking.
And we've got about an hour left, haven't we?
Yeah, look, if you're coming this way, guys,
you're going to be glad you did.
It's a really nice crossing.
Oh, fabulous.
France, ahoy!
Beautiful.
We're coming into Dieppe now.
What a great crossing this has been.
One thing though, the floor's really squeaky.
Listen to me.
Can you hear it squeak?
There's nobody here, otherwise I wouldn't be doing this.
I'm walking really weird like this.
Oh, somebody is here.
Wow, this is great.
I think it's going to, is he reversing now
to pull into there?
Is that where we're going to drive off?
Just there.
Actually, that's all right.
This looks like a nice little small port as well, Bab.
This is what's even better.
You can sit here.
Look, Gary's sitting here
and you can watch the ramp go down.
Oh, it's all exciting here, isn't it?
I'm just talking to some lovely people here
who tell me that if you book over the phone
and you're over 60,
you're going to get 20% off your cabin
if you book a cabin, aren't you?
Or the ferry.
I'll tell you what, they don't have to disembark quick,
don't they, Gary?
We've literally been allowed down the stairs
and then you start disembarking,
so it's quick sticks.
That looks nice and easy to get on that ramp,
doesn't it, Bab?
Yeah, this looks all right, this.
He's pulling us forward now.
Thanks, honey.
Right, and we're getting here now.
Oh, we're in the up.
Oh, look, Gary's going to be jealous
he's seen a motorbike.
It's got a nice Canya setter in it.
Triumphs, both tigers.
Are they?
Oh, they might be the guys I was talking to earlier.
If you are, hi you guys, how you doing?
Here we go.
Such nice people, honestly.
Look, this is what it looks like
as you come up the ramp.
Really simple ramp, isn't it, Gary?
That is easy, that.
So I did read somewhere
that some of the ferries,
you've got to watch the back end.
I think it was the Santander ferry, I'm not sure.
You know, pop in the comments,
have you had any experience
of getting off really dodgy ferries
so we can all avoid it?
Pretty much one entrance point
that you'll get checked.
It's splitting into two lanes,
but it's going quite quick, isn't it, Gary?
Yeah.
This is the first time
that I'm going to use my Irish passport
and we've got to hope
that they don't stamp you, aren't we, Gary?
Yes, well, they can stamp me
as much as they want.
The rules are quite clear.
If I'm travelling with you,
the 90-day rule doesn't apply to anybody.
So no problem coming out through the customs.
The guy was really good.
We don't know what's going to happen
with the passport, the Irish passport,
but don't forget,
you've got to keep to the other side of the road.
Absolutely gorgeous here.
We've just passed a couple of airs
right by the ferry port
and you can just pretty much walk down here.
There's a couple of little barter backs.
Take the second left onto Grande Rue du Pouillet, D925,
then turn right onto Rue Joseph Brunel.
I'm sure that pronunciation's wrong,
but anyway.
OK, so we're going left here, I think.
You've just seen diesel, haven't you, Gary?
How much was diesel?
£1.75, so it's actually cheaper
in the UK at the moment.
Yeah, fill up before you get on the ferry.
That's what we did anyway.
Somebody had mentioned it online,
so I thought, right, let's fill up.
So good move, I reckon.
But we're heading to Lidl
and I reckon that'll be a bit cheaper.
I won't do a full Lidl video this time,
but I will do a shopping video very soon for you.
If you enter, the wine is the very first thing you see.
You don't see that in an English one, do you?
It's usually up the back.
But look, there's wine for £1.99.
I'm on a diet, so we're not having any of that, but...
Oh, God, Gary.
Lovely fridge red.
And here's the pitch.
Looks pretty healthy, actually.
Looks nice.
I don't know how much it is yet.
We'll do a proper shopping video for you at some stage.
Well, Lidl was a right shock.
It's real dear, isn't it, Gary?
It was very expensive compared to the UK.
Compared to England?
Honestly, my eyes were watering.
So I will do a shopping video.
I'll probably pick a Lidl or something.
But I was told, somebody did message and say,
like, you know, the price of meat and fish is quite expensive.
But actually, the price of vegetables was...
I had a little example.
There was a tin of kidney beans.
And I know because I just stocked up on a couple of tins
for my chilli con carne.
Anyway, €1.71 for the same tins
it's costing you 49p.
So you best be stocking up on some of your tins
before you come over.
I just said it feels more natural being on this side of the road
because you've been driving in the States for so long.
It's been weird for you driving in England, isn't it?
So we're heading to our air.
It's a couple of kilometres long here.
Just looks so beautiful and French countryside.
It's raining a bit, but...
And we managed not to buy a bottle of wine,
which is some sort of miracle.
Oh, we're just coming into the village, Petit Epiville.
Oh, Camping Le Source.
Is this it?
Your destination is on the left.
Oh, OK, right.
Now I can see why it's free.
No, this is the dump, love.
This was the picture of the dump.
That he said.
OK, well, hold on.
There was something that said Camping Le Source there.
This can't be it.
This is just a dump station.
Gary's going to put the lights stickers on, aren't you?
Yeah, because it's getting dark now.
I was going to do it when we were waiting in the port this morning,
but completely forgot about it.
So what do you have to do?
Just pop them on the edge?
Yeah.
Yeah, there's a picture of a light.
They normally go on the left hand side.
There is a picture of it.
Is there something for you to...
Is it easy?
They're sticky.
You just stick them on the side of the lens.
Right.
It's raining outside there now, isn't it?
Yeah, I know.
Just read this first.
It basically just says where on the light you put them on.
OK, I'm just going to record this for prosperity
because Gary's actually reading some instructions.
He never reads them.
So this is a toilet dump, isn't it?
Yeah, it looks like it.
All right.
Let me find out where the actual sleeping bit is.
So we're not going to stay at the dump, are we, Gary?
We're going to move on to an actual camping area.
We found one.
It's about 25 kilometers away
because unfortunately some of them are shut.
So you could probably be a bit more organized than us.
And also, we're not really used to using that park for night yet, are we?
We don't know what the things mean.
But yeah, that's just a septic tank or sewage pit, isn't it?
Oh God, I turned that off.
And we're not sure our sat-nav works here as well.
So it's all good fun, though.
We're excited, though.
Still fun, isn't it?
It's all the challenge.
And he's put them stickers on.
So, you know, he's managed to get that done.
And we're going to find a really nice set.
It's going to be amazing.
We made it to an air.
And we've ended up in St-Pierre-Ben-Urville.
Oh my gosh, I'm going to be terrible at pronouncing stuff at the moment.
So you've got a bit of toilets.
Apparently there's showers.
There is some electricity and it's free.
Now, I don't know if the electricity is free, but it's chock-a-block.
It's supposed to be for about six motorhomes, but it's well busy.
But it looks like it's getting some water there.
So that looks free.
A couple of bins.
And here's the toilet.
I think it's a men's and women's.
I'm not going in here.
Gary will go in here.
He don't care.
But there's quite a few motorhomes.
And here we are.
I'm going to put a bit of dinner on now.
And we'll set off in the morning.
It's the morning.
And not only did we survive the night, but we had a great night's sleep.
Talk about lovely and comfortable here.
Wasn't it a nice night's sleep, Gary?
Here's Gary.
It was a lovely night's sleep.
Really quiet.
He slept straight away, didn't you?
He zonked out last night.
He was really tired, weren't we?
I felt like I was on the ferry a little bit in the beginning, didn't you?
Well, you didn't, did you?
No.
But we were really lucky this morning because a couple of people moved off
and they left their electricity posts, didn't they?
And are they free?
They are free.
They're free.
I'll show you what they look like in a second.
But we're going to move off from here and we're going to head down to...
We don't even know where we're going, what it's called, do we?
No.
We're going to go and meet a couple of people that we know.
So that's the plan for today.
But we've got some...
Breon, I think we're going to.
Oh, we're going to Breon, aren't we?
Breon first, yeah.
Oh, I think that's a girl's name.
It's a pretty name, isn't it?
Right.
OK, let's show you the electricity stuff.
This is quite a good little park up.
We thought it was going to be crowded, but couldn't hear a thing.
It was like Churchmouse, wasn't it, last night?
OK, here's your electricity ports.
Now, there's nowhere to put any money in, so we reckon it's free.
And that's amazing, isn't it?
So we're parked here.
A couple of the guys, they've gone from this morning.
But honestly, I don't think you can go wrong, can you, babe?
No, it's great.
It's a little park like this.
Yeah, look, a little bit of farmland at the back.
It's proper French, isn't it?
Right, we're back on the road.
We can't wait to get to our next destination.
So we're heading to Camembert.
So if you want to join us for a bit of cheesy fun next week,
make sure that you hit that subscribe
or at least ding-a-ling that bell if you've already subscribed.
Thanks for watching, guys.
Hope you've enjoyed it.
Don't forget, let us know what you're thinking down in the comments.
If you've got any great ideas where we can go, pop them in the comments.
We might not be able to make it, but we love to hear from you.
Take care, guys.
Love you loads.
Ta-ra.
