hey folks my plan for today is to turn
this Old Furnace blower motor and some
filters into a shop air cleaner the
blower motor is actually a three-speed
motor but I'm only going to use the
slowest speed I've removed the motor
from the enclosure to look at the wiring
diagram and check out all of the uh
motor ratings uh hooked it up for the
slowest speed and checked it with my
ammeter with and without restrictions
and all of the amperage levels are
within uh the the specifications on the
side of the motor so we're all good
there now for the filters I'm going to
be using four single stage filters uh
each one of these are 20 X2 filter and
they are rated at MV 13 filtration and I
actually saved $35 by buying a box of
six online rather than buying four at my
local home center now also these are
rated at MV 13 the ones at my local Home
Center are just best whatever the best
filtration level is uh for what they
provide so saved quite a bit of money by
buying these online so why am I building
a cart instead of a air cleaner that
typically hangs from the ceiling in wood
shops uh that's because uh two reasons
number one I want to be able to bring
the filtration closer to where I'm
working at mainly the lathe if I'm
working in here with the lathe uh with
the garage door shut I want to have some
air filtration right next to the lathe
especially when sanding and number two
uh I want to use the exhaust from the
blower as a fan even with this uh air
conditioner in my shop in the summertime
it still gets a little bit warm
occasionally and not necessarily cooling
the the space uh but circulating air
really does make a big difference so uh
it's going to kill a couple birds with
one stone as the saying goes uh my
original intentions were to use the cart
as a grinder stand but I was cleaning
off my my assembly table one day and
moved my grinder to where it is right
now below my drill press and that seems
like a happy place for it to be so
that's going to stay right here I don't
want to if all possible just have this
cart sitting by itself I want to use it
and maximize it in one way or another
and I don't have another benchtop tool
to sit on top of it so the next best
option is to replace one of the carts
that I have currently to make it a
little bit more useful here in the shop
this is my planer stand planer cart uh
and it's just a Cy lever design that has
a bunch of these arms that stick out in
the front uh kind of kind of to act as
shelves without the bulkiness and you
just lay crap across them and I say lay
crap across them because that's pretty
much what I do it's a catch all and I
just put stuff everywhere uh on this
thing that doesn't necessarily belong
here so uh this is a good candidate to
be replaced and I'm not going to destroy
this particular cart because it is a
good cart it's a handy design and I know
a friend of mine who can use it in his
shop so out with the old and in with the
new one the design I came up with is
extremely simple there just four legs
which happen to be 2x4s with rabbits on
two sides and inside those rabbits along
the bottom will be four plywood panels
inside those rabbits along the top will
be four single stage filters the top and
bottom are both plywood panels as well
there will be a uh set of casters down
at the bottom and of course an
integrated
switch As I said the legs will be made
out of 2x4s and I thought that I had
some 2x4s on hand just some scrap pieces
laying around and as it turns out I do
not which is kind of odd so I do also
have some 2x10 so I'm basically just
cutting 2x4s out of 2x10 this will
actually allow me to get a little bit
better material which really isn't that
necessary for this
project I'm making all of the rabbits on
the legs by making two 90° cuts on the
table saw and while they're not
symmetrical legs there's going to be two
lefts and two rights I can get away with
cutting every one of them the same and
then taking two of the boards and
flipping them into the end uh which
reverses the cuts and then that will
result in two left and two right

legs I'm using scrap plywood for the
lower four panels and these need to be
about 11 in tall and about 1 E of an
inch longer than the filters are

the blower is just going to sit on the
floor in the middle of the cart and it's
going to be attached to one of these
panels now in order to attach it to the
panels I've attached some scrap pieces
of wood to the blower itself and then I
can screw through the panel into
those pieces of scrap wood now I've
already taken the time to Center
everything and lay out the appropriate
size opening for this particular blower
and now I just need to cut this out with
a jigsaw
[Music]
the assembly starts with the front and
the back and I'm using one clamp to hold
everything together and with very little
pressure I don't want the legs to Bow up
as I'm trying to screw the plywood down
now each piece of plywood is going to be
secured with four screws per side and I
am pre drilling these holes because uh
the solid wood beneath the plywood is
rather thin and if I put all of these
screws along uh a grain line on a very
thin piece of wood odds are it's just
going to pop that piece off and split
right down the middle so I don't want
that to happen I am pre-drilling the
holes now once the front and backs are
completed then I can attach those
together uh with the exact same method
using the plywood panels which are also
the exact same size for the sides when
it's attaching the side panels though I
do not need to pre-drill because I am
going through a much thicker piece of
wood at this Direction with the main
structure completed I can use the
outside corner measurements to determine
the final dimensions of the top and
bottom plywood panels and again I'm
using some more scrap half2 in plywood
for this
[Music]
I'm about to install the motor in here
but I wanted to point out that these
butt joint seams down here I just put
some really strong duct tape and I don't
think there will ever be a problem with
air seeping through here because there
is so much filtered air uh air through
the filters up here at the top um but
it's it's really simple to just put some
tape down there and seal that off and
prevent any issues long term
now when the filters are installed the
sides will be lined up with those rabits
so there's no way for the filter to be
pushed through on the sides however I
don't currently have anything on the top
or the bottom so to add some support
down here at the bottom I'm probably
going to use some more scraps of/ in
plywood and just put a little band on
the back side of this piece uh that will
secure the bottom and prevent it from
being pushed forward now the the top
side I don't really have much to attach
to other than this top panel so it
sounds like a good opportunity to use
the offcuts that were actually the waste
material from when I cut the rabbits so
I'll just size these to fit and attach
them to the bottom of the top panel I
went ahead and did the electrical really
quick and it's just a very simple
process so I'm not going to cover it in
this video there's tons of resources
that are better suited to show you uh
how electricity works and and how to
wire up a simple setup like this so I'm
not not going to show you all the
details however I will give you a quick
rundown this is my power coming in and
this is a very tight fitting hole
however I do not want this to be pulled
out and potentially disconnected from
the motor so on the inside I put a
couple zip ties and from on the inside
here uh the power wire is split and a
new wire comes up to this switch two
wires and once the switch is activated
power comes back down the other wire and
Powers the motor now I'm pleasantly
surprised at how quiet this actual
blower motor is so now all that's left
for me to
do is to uh steal the casters off of the
other cart and then uh put the planer on
top of it this is pretty much done
[Music]
I made some 5mm hardwood plywood clips
and these are held in place with just
one screw each and they just swivel into
place to hold the filters in place now I
don't have a set of plans for this
because I built it specifically for my
use with the motor that I had on hand
the blower motor uh but if you are
interested I do have a link to the
SketchUp file I used in the article for
this particular video thanks for
watching and you guys have a great day
