So, I got out on the water right around
sunrise and headed out. The plan today
was to head out 15 to 20 miles, jump
around to a few different spots, do some
scouting, look for some new areas, and
if I found something that looked good,
drop down with a jig or other
artificial, and just check it out. But I
did run into a bunch of popup storms. I
was having to scoot around quite a bit,
so I didn't get in as much fishing as
I'd hoped. But the times that I got to
stop on a few good spots were very
productive. All right, guys. We're about
20 miles out. We're between some domes
and fads and stuff. So, we're going to
jump from spot to spot. But while we do
it, I'm going to troll this nomad
between spots. See if we can hook
something on the way to the next one.
See, I just got a short little piece of
wire on here.
So, the early trolling between spots was
not productive, but that did change
later in the day.
So, I got to the first spot that I was
going to jig at, and it had a lot of
good marks. So, I got down my Chaos
Fishing high-speed rod and dropped to
the bottom. And it didn't take long for
the action to start.
And here's just a little tip my buddy
Mikey showed me that uh if you want your
jig to fall faster, if it's not falling
fast enough and it's kind of fluttering
down and you want to get down to the
bottom quick, you just put the line
between two fingers and just put a
little light tension and it makes that
jig fall vertically instead of back and
forth horizontally. Makes it get down
there a lot faster.
Damn.
What I got?
Doesn't feel like a trigger.
What this is
very weird, very weird behaving. Thanks.
Holy moly. Look at that double red
grouper.
One of them's a keeper.
For sure one of them's a peep.
They both might be keepers.
All right, guys. That's pretty awesome.
Double red grouper. Let's get a tape on
these guys. Ow. Ow.
Oh, yeah. That one's a keeper for sure.
Don't think this guy is
now. He's about 18. So, we'll let him go
back down.
gone.
This guy's getting bled.
All right.
Spring. Sweet.
That's not a vermilion.
Oh, little red snapper.
Oh, yeah. All right, I'm on.
A lot of times when I'm taking a break
or getting a drink, I'll leave my jig
down there just about a foot off the
bottom and leave my rod in the rod
holder. And surprisingly it gets hit a
lot like that drifting. It's fighting
like a grouper.
Yep. Baby red.
I continued getting good marks on the
fish finder. So, I just decided to drift
this area for a while and drop the jig
while I was drifting.
Come on. be another keeper grouper.
Ah, another short
That's better maybe.
Come on. Where are the big ones at?
Oh yeah, that's better.
That's keeper red grouper.
Unless it's foul hooked.
Ah, keeper Vermillion.
It seemed like each cast the fish got a
little bit smaller,
so it was time to move on to a new spot.
So, this bait didn't seem to be running
right. So, I was pulling it up to check
it. I was just going to reel it up. And
while I was reeling, all of a sudden, it
got hammered.
Oh god,
I'm on. Crap.
Crap. Come on.
Don't know what I got.
Feels pretty good though.
What is it?
Oh, stupid bonita.
Gosh dang it.
Oh, great.
Whoa, about lost my That was pretty
lucky. I don't know how that happened.
All right.
Good shark bait for John. So, I tried to
get to some more of my reef spots, but
these popup storms just kept blowing up
over me. So, I decided to just kind of
troll around and see what I could get.
All right, we're on something good here.
That doesn't feel like a
That doesn't feel like a bonita.
Did he come off
or is he swimming at me? Oh, he's
swimming at me.
What is it? Another stupid bonita.
Golly
look like a giant bonita.
Oh no, it's a nice smoker king.
All right,
fat king.
See if I can gaff him.
Keep his head in the water. He's trying
to make a run.
Got him. All right. I've learned when
you're landing a gaff fish and you're
putting your rod in the holder, always
loosen the drag.
Nice fat king.
All right,
big old fat king.
Ah, golly.
So strong.
Let's get him in the smoker.
Get him
in the cooler. I hope you guys enjoyed
the video. Sorry there wasn't more
action in it, but some days just go like
that. But I just tried to make the best
of what I had. So, tight lines
everybody. I'll see you on the next one.
